AI Companies in the UK: 2,100+ Active Firms (2026)
AI companies in the UK build machine-learning software, models and data systems for commercial, public-sector and regulated use cases.
Buying centres tend to split between technology teams procuring model infrastructure, operations teams buying automation and decision support, and regulated business units using analytics for risk, compliance, healthcare or employment workflows. Sales are mainly B2B and public-sector rather than consumer-facing, with buyers ranging from specialist SMEs testing applied models to mid-market operators and enterprise departments with procurement, security and governance checks. Engagements usually sit between software subscription, project-led implementation and embedded model licensing, so technical proof points, data access, auditability and accountability matter as much as product scope.
2,105 AI companies are actively trading in the UK, a cohort that spans early commercial teams, mid-market software suppliers and larger applied-analytics operators. 227 have turnover above £5M, while 310 were incorporated since 2022, leaving the field weighted towards businesses that pre-date the most recent wave of public attention around generative systems. The reported employment footprint is 3,714 people, concentrated in firms with stated headcount rather than a broad labour-market estimate. That makes the list useful for finding operating AI suppliers, but it should not be read as a full measure of every AI-related role inside larger non-AI businesses.
The UK’s current AI regime is regulator-led rather than built around a dedicated AI statute. GOV.UK guidance frames supplier expectations through principles covering safety and security, transparency and explainability, fairness, accountability and governance, and contestability and redress, and describes implementation as voluntary and at regulators’ discretion within their existing remits. That creates a market structure in which obligations follow the use case: data protection, financial services, healthcare, product safety and employment deployments can each pull an AI supplier into different assurance, documentation or audit expectations.
Commercial maturity appears uneven. Many suppliers still look like specialist product or services hybrids, using implementation work to fund repeatable software, while a smaller group has moved into procurement-heavy enterprise and regulated-sector accounts. The scarcer scale-up cohort should make revenue quality, customer concentration and assurance processes more useful screening signals than model claims alone. Consolidation may come from buyers preferring fewer AI vendors, incumbent software providers adding embedded automation, and regulated customers asking for clearer accountability when model outputs affect decisions.

Key facts
About 10% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (227 of 2,105 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
14% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (310 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The UK regulates AI through existing sector regulators rather than a single AI statute, so obligations tend to arise through data protection, financial services, healthcare, product safety or employment rules.
The 2023 white paper set out five cross-cutting principles, with 2024 regulator guidance describing implementation as voluntary and at regulators’ discretion.
GOV.UK’s Artificial Intelligence sector study 2024 estimated the wider UK AI sector at more than 5,800 companies, up 85% over two years.
GOV.UK estimated 2024 AI revenue at £23.9 billion, GVA at £11.8 billion and dedicated AI company investment at £2.9 billion.
In 2023, 61 notable AI models originated from US-based institutions, compared with 21 from the European Union.

How UK AI companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Most AI suppliers make money by packaging models, workflow automation or decision-support components into repeatable software, then adding implementation where a customer’s data, systems or assurance requirements need work. Revenue is usually a mix of annual subscriptions, usage-priced access, embedded model licences and professional services around deployment, tuning and evaluation. Smaller deals often begin as paid pilots or discovery projects, while larger accounts move towards departmental contracts with security review, service levels and governance artefacts. Gross margin can depend on compute intensity, so sellers should listen for whether the firm owns reusable software or mainly sells bespoke analysis.
Who they sell to
Customers are usually businesses or public-sector bodies with a defined operational problem rather than general curiosity about AI. Typical buyer groups include CTOs, heads of data, product leaders, operations directors, risk and compliance teams, and finance leaders when automation affects cost or revenue controls. Technical users may run the evaluation, but procurement, security and legal teams often shape the final buying path. Early-stage suppliers tend to sell directly through founder-led or specialist sales, with proof-of-concept work used to prove fit. More mature vendors face RFPs, partner channels and framework buying, especially where the use case touches regulated decisions or citizen services.
What they buy
Most AI firms tend to spend on compute, cloud hosting, data storage, data engineering, model evaluation, monitoring and security. Tooling around privacy, identity, access control and audit trails matters because customers often ask how models were trained, tested and governed. Commercial teams usually need CRM, billing, customer support, proposal tooling and usage analytics as pilots become recurring contracts. External services can include legal advice on data rights and liability, accounting support for revenue recognition, insurance, technical recruitment, customer research and sector marketing. Teams selling into regulated markets may also buy certification, assurance and documentation support before procurement deadlines.
Why and how to sell to them
AI companies tend to evaluate new suppliers when customer demands outgrow ad hoc delivery, when compute costs start to squeeze margins, or when a regulated deployment exposes gaps in documentation, testing or accountability. Funding events, senior hires, new enterprise customers, public-sector tenders and moves from services work into repeatable software can all signal budget. Outbound tends to land better when it is tied to a specific constraint: shortening security reviews, improving model monitoring, reducing manual labelling effort, speeding implementation, or giving sales teams evidence that satisfies cautious buyers. Claims about generic AI uplift are less persuasive than proof that a process cost, risk or procurement blockage can be reduced.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
