AI Companies in Cambridge: 48 Active Firms (2026)
AI companies in Cambridge build machine-learning software, data products and applied automation for commercial, scientific and regulated use cases.
Buying centres cluster around technical and regulated functions rather than generic productivity budgets: scientific teams, healthcare operations, industrial users, financial services teams and public-sector buyers. Sales motions tend to be consultative, with customers expecting model development, data engineering, deployment support and governance work alongside the software or data product itself. Typical engagements look closer to applied implementation programmes than low-touch subscriptions, especially where customer-specific data, explainability, fairness or accountability requirements sit inside the buying process. The commercial fit is therefore often with specialist growth firms that can translate research-heavy capability into usable systems for cautious buyers.

Cambridge has 48 actively trading AI companies, making it a compact local cohort rather than a broad software market in miniature. The employment footprint is 792 reported employees, which points to a sector made up mainly of specialist teams rather than large employers. That shape matters for researchers: the city’s AI activity is likely to contain deep technical capability, but individual suppliers may still depend on a relatively small number of customer deployments, research partnerships or regulated-sector sales cycles.
The UK regulates AI through sector regimes rather than a dedicated AI statute. GOV.UK guidance frames the main expectations around safety and security, transparency and explainability, fairness, accountability and governance, and contestability and redress, with implementation left to existing regulators within their remits. For Cambridge suppliers, obligations therefore depend on the use case: data protection for personal-data models, financial services rules for decisioning tools, healthcare requirements for clinical settings, product safety where AI is embedded in equipment, and employment rules where systems affect workers or applicants.
Cambridge’s AI market appears likely to remain specialist and technically oriented, with commercial progress shaped by trust, validation and buyer readiness as much as model capability. Firms selling into scientific, healthcare, industrial or public-sector settings tend to face longer procurement cycles and more scrutiny over data use, explainability and accountability. That may favour suppliers able to combine engineering with implementation and governance, rather than those offering a narrow model layer. Scale-up scarcity also suggests a market where partnerships, acquisitions and service-led productisation may matter more than broad horizontal expansion.

Key facts
About 8% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (4 of 48 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
10% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (5 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The UK does not currently regulate AI through a single, dedicated AI statute; obligations tend to follow the use case across data protection, financial services, healthcare, product safety or employment rules.
GOV.UK’s Artificial Intelligence sector study 2024 estimated the wider UK AI sector at more than 5,800 companies, £23.9 billion of revenue and 86,139 employees.
Dedicated AI company investment was reported at £2.9 billion in 2024, above the previous 2022 high.
The 2023 AI regulation white paper described the UK as third globally for AI research and development and home to around a third of Europe’s AI companies.
Stanford HAI’s 2024 AI Index says 61 notable AI models originated from US-based institutions in 2023, compared with 21 from the European Union.

How Cambridge AI companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Cambridge AI suppliers usually earn revenue through a mixture of software subscriptions, project fees and usage-based charges, with services attached to make the model usable in a customer setting. The sale is often not just access to an algorithm: it can include data preparation, model tuning, integration into existing workflows, monitoring and documentation for internal assurance. Pricing therefore tends to sit between enterprise software and specialist consultancy. A buyer may pay for a feasibility stage, then a deployment programme, then an ongoing licence or managed service. Where the model is embedded in hardware, scientific workflows or regulated decisioning, revenue may also depend on validation milestones and customer acceptance testing.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually technical and risk-aware teams rather than mass-market users. Scientific organisations, healthcare operators, industrial firms, financial services teams and public bodies tend to involve domain specialists, technology leaders, data-protection staff and procurement early in the process. Economic buyers may be a CTO, chief data officer, clinical or operational director, CFO or head of transformation, depending on the use case. Contracts are typically direct-sales led, with workshops and proof stages before procurement approval; public-sector work may move through frameworks or formal tenders. Contract value is often shaped by data access, integration complexity, assurance burden and the extent of human support needed after deployment.
What they buy
Most Cambridge AI firms tend to spend on cloud compute, data storage, development environments, model testing, security, privacy tooling and monitoring, because their cost base sits close to engineering and deployment rather than media or fulfilment. Sellers may also find demand for CRM, bid management, finance systems, billing, customer success tooling and legal support once pilots turn into repeatable contracts. Recruitment, contractor networks and specialist marketing can matter where a firm needs scarce engineering, data science, clinical, regulatory or industrial expertise. For earlier-stage suppliers, lightweight systems and fractional services may fit better than large platform replacements.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears when an AI supplier moves from research collaboration or bespoke pilots into repeat deployments. Triggers include a new regulated-sector customer, a senior commercial or finance hire, a funding event, a shift from services revenue to licence revenue, or preparations for security and data-protection review. Outbound messaging tends to land better when it reduces buyer friction: shorter assurance cycles, clearer audit trails, lower integration workload, easier evidence gathering for procurement, or more predictable delivery costs. Cambridge firms with small teams are unlikely to respond to generic productivity claims; category-specific proof, technical credibility and low implementation drag usually matter more.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
