Deep Tech Companies in Cambridge: 200+ Active Firms (2026)
Deep tech companies develop science- and engineering-led technologies for frontier commercial uses, concentrated in Cambridge and nearby innovation clusters.
Buying centres tend to sit with CTOs, product engineering heads, R&D directors and domain owners in health, infrastructure, industrial and public-sector organisations. Cambridge deep-tech suppliers usually sell higher-friction propositions than horizontal software: prototypes, platform access, specialist components, licensed intellectual property, research-led services or deployment programmes that require technical diligence before procurement. Enterprise and public-sector buyers matter more than micro-business customers, although some tools reach developer or engineering teams through smaller pilots. Engagements are typically consultative, budgeted as strategic technology projects rather than low-cost subscriptions, with proof-of-concept work, integration risk and security review shaping the sales motion.
Cambridge has 248 actively trading deep tech companies, a compact local cohort with a visible scale-up tail. Reported employment totals 1,350 people, which points to a market built around specialist teams rather than broad local workforces. The commercial base is likely to be uneven: laboratory, hardware and regulated-software models can take longer to convert technical work into revenue, while enterprise and infrastructure buyers often require validation before larger procurement. For researchers, that makes headcount and revenue thresholds useful screens, but not perfect proxies for technical maturity.
No single UK licensing regime applies across deep tech; oversight follows the use case. AI development sits under the government’s sector-specific model, while engineering biology work is shaped by the Engineering Biology Regulators Network, regulatory sandboxes and the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act. Cyber security activity is being pulled toward secure-by-design expectations and the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill. Quantum technologies and semiconductors are more often framed through national strategies, public funding and standards work than through a dedicated licence. That uneven map matters for diligence because regulatory exposure can sit with the buyer, the deployment setting or the underlying technology.
Commercial progress appears likely to remain uneven. Cambridge has depth in research-led categories, but deep-tech sales tend to depend on technical validation, patient procurement and access to customers willing to test technology before full deployment. That favours specialised teams with defensible intellectual property and credible routes into regulated or infrastructure-heavy markets. It also leaves thinner companies exposed when grant cycles, venture funding or enterprise budgets pause. Consolidation may come through industrial partnerships and selective acquisitions rather than a broad wave of standalone public-market candidates.

Above £5M turnover
Reported turnover threshold
Key facts
About 4% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (12 of 248 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
20% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (52 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK policy identifies six priority frontier technologies: advanced connectivity, AI, cyber security, engineering biology, quantum technologies and semiconductors.
Deep tech is not a single regulated industry in the UK; oversight tends to follow the technology, use case and end market.
AI is being handled through a sector-specific model, while engineering biology is linked to the Engineering Biology Regulators Network, regulatory sandboxes and the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act.
UK deep tech venture investment has slowed from its 2021 peak but still draws over £5 billion in annual venture capital.
Domestic investor participation falls from 57% at seed stage to under 10% at late stage, so later UK deep tech rounds tend to rely more on overseas capital.

How Cambridge deep tech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Cambridge deep-tech firms usually monetise intellectual property, technical know-how and specialist engineering capacity rather than packaged software alone. Revenue often starts with paid feasibility work, prototype contracts, research services or platform access, then moves into licence fees, component supply, deployment programmes or recurring support once a buyer has validated the technology. Pricing tends to reflect technical risk and scarcity of expertise: bespoke scopes, milestone payments and enterprise agreements are more common than low-friction self-serve subscriptions. Hardware-adjacent and regulated models may also need manufacturing, testing or clinical-style evidence before revenue scales.
Who they sell to
Most sell to organisations with technical budget owners and formal risk review processes: industrial groups, healthcare operators, infrastructure owners, public-sector bodies and enterprise technology teams. The usual buying committee includes CTOs, R&D directors, product engineering heads, security teams, procurement and finance, with domain specialists carrying weight during evaluation. Sales cycles tend to be longer than for horizontal SaaS because buyers need proof that the technology works in their environment. Routes to market are typically direct sales, research partnerships, public procurement, channel relationships with engineering integrators, or pilot-led expansion from one technical team into a wider deployment.
What they buy
Most Cambridge deep-tech firms tend to spend on tools and services that help them turn research into repeatable delivery. Common purchases include cloud and high-performance computing capacity, data infrastructure, software development tooling, observability, cyber security, quality management, CRM, grant and finance administration, billing, technical documentation and analytics. Hardware-led teams may also buy lab services, prototyping support, test equipment, specialist manufacturing capacity and supply-chain advice. Professional-services needs are often material: intellectual-property counsel, regulatory advice, accounting, public-sector bid support, technical marketing and recruitment for scarce engineering, scientific and commercial roles.
Why and how to sell to them
Deep-tech buyers tend to evaluate vendors when technical work starts to meet commercial process: a funded pilot, a move from prototype to deployment, new enterprise customers, headcount growth, regulatory review or the first repeatable sales motion. Pain points usually sit around validation, security assurance, procurement evidence, integration with legacy systems and the cost of specialist talent. Outbound works better when it is anchored in the firm’s stage and use case rather than generic technology language. Useful angles include shortening technical diligence, reducing delivery risk, supporting regulated deployments or helping small commercial teams manage enterprise-grade buyer expectations.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
