Deep Tech Companies in Manchester: 200+ Active Firms (2026)
Deep tech companies in Manchester commercialise science-led advances in AI, hardware, engineering biology, quantum and advanced computing across the city region.
Buying centres tend to sit with technical leaders rather than general procurement: industrial R&D teams, healthcare operators, infrastructure owners, public-sector technology buyers and enterprise security or computing functions. Sales are usually consultative, with early work framed as pilots, feasibility studies or integration projects before longer procurement cycles. The buyer is not simply purchasing software; it is assessing evidence, standards alignment, deployment risk and the supplier’s ability to turn specialist science or engineering into an operational system. Engagements therefore range from small technical teams supporting narrow use cases to larger deployments where assurance, compliance and support matter as much as the underlying intellectual property.
Manchester has 262 actively trading deep tech companies, making the city-region a concentrated but still specialist market rather than a broad corporate base. Reported employment across the cohort totals 2,161 people, so the visible footprint is material without implying a mature large-employer cluster. Recent company formation is still part of the picture: 65 firms were incorporated since 2022. Revenue scale is thinner, with 8 companies reporting turnover above £5M, which points to a long tail of technically oriented firms still moving from prototype, consultancy-led delivery or early customer deployments into repeatable commercial sales.
Deep tech has no single UK rulebook, so compliance tends to follow the technology and use case. AI is being handled through a sector-specific model, while engineering biology sits closer to the Engineering Biology Regulators Network, regulatory sandboxes and the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act. Cyber security activity is linked to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill and secure-by-design policy. Quantum and semiconductor activity is shaped more by national strategies, public funding conditions and standards work than by a licence regime, which makes regulatory diligence a project-by-project exercise.
Manchester’s science-led firms appear to be moving through a familiar bottleneck: proving that specialist technical work can survive procurement, assurance and integration with existing systems. Demand tends to be clearer where buyers have regulated operations or hard infrastructure problems, because defensibility matters more than generic automation. Scale-up scarcity may keep the market fragmented, with acquisitions and partnerships doing some of the work that large internal sales teams cannot yet do. The firms most likely to endure are likely to be those that pair technical depth with repeatable delivery, not just research credentials.

Key facts
About 3% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (8 of 262 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
24% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (65 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK government policy groups deep tech around six priority frontier technologies: advanced connectivity, AI, cyber security, engineering biology, quantum technologies and semiconductors.
Regulation tends to follow the use case rather than the label, with AI handled through a sector-specific model and engineering biology linked to regulatory sandboxes and the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act.
UK deep tech venture investment has slowed from its 2021 peak but still attracts over £5 billion in annual venture capital.
Domestic investor participation falls from 57% at seed stage to under 10% at late stage, leaving later rounds more dependent on overseas capital.
The UK accounted for over 18% of global quantum VC funding since 2020.

How Manchester deep tech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Manchester deep tech firms usually earn revenue through paid pilots, co-development projects, licence fees, subscription software, usage-priced technical infrastructure or hardware sales with support and maintenance attached. Early commercial work often looks more like applied engineering than repeatable product delivery, especially where the customer needs testing, integration or evidence before deployment. Margin can sit in intellectual property, specialist models, embedded systems, materials, devices or technical services, depending on the field. Engagements tend to begin with a defined technical problem and a narrow proof point, then move towards longer contracts once reliability, security, performance and operational fit are clearer.
Who they sell to
Buyers are typically mid-market and enterprise organisations, healthcare providers, infrastructure operators, industrial groups, research-heavy teams and public-sector technology functions. The first sponsor is often a CTO, Head of R&D, CISO, clinical technology lead, engineering director or operations owner, with finance and procurement entering once a pilot becomes a deployment. Smaller deals are usually direct and relationship-led; larger opportunities tend to involve formal procurement, technical due diligence, security review and sometimes partner delivery. Sales cycles are usually measured in months rather than weeks because the buyer needs to test whether the technical claim survives its own environment.
What they buy
Most deep tech firms tend to spend on the operating layer around their science or engineering work: cloud infrastructure, specialist compute, data storage, observability, security tooling, quality management, technical documentation and collaboration systems. Hardware-heavy teams may also need prototyping services, test facilities, electronics support, outsourced manufacturing, certification advice and supply-chain partners. Commercially, they often buy CRM, billing, finance, grant support, investor reporting, recruitment, employer branding and technical marketing. Legal and advisory spend is also common, particularly around intellectual property, commercial contracts, data protection, export considerations, insurance and standards alignment.
Why and how to sell to them
Deep tech buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a prototype has to become a repeatable customer deployment, when a new contract brings assurance requirements, or when funding, hiring or public-sector procurement creates pressure to formalise operations. Common pain points include long technical sales cycles, integration risk, evidence gathering, security review, specialist hiring and the gap between research output and commercial delivery. Outbound messages usually land better when they are specific to the buyer’s deployment burden: reducing time spent on audits, improving engineering visibility, supporting regulated customers, lowering delivery risk or helping a small technical team look credible to larger procurement functions.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
