Deep Tech Companies in Glasgow: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Deep tech companies develop science- and engineering-led products across AI, hardware, materials, health, energy and computing in the Glasgow area.
Buying centres tend to sit with technical, operations and product teams rather than general IT alone. Glasgow-area suppliers in this cohort are often trying to convert research-led capability into components, platforms or systems that need validation before routine procurement. Buyers are mostly business or public-sector organisations with specialist requirements: healthcare operators, energy users, industrial teams, security functions and research-intensive corporates. Engagements tend to involve pilots, technical assessment, integration work and regulated or safety-aware deployment, so sales cycles are usually more consultative than for horizontal software.

Glasgow has 122 actively trading deep tech companies in this list, making it a relatively compact local cohort rather than a broad software market. The reported employment footprint is 557 people, which points to many firms still operating with compact specialist teams. That shape fits a market where technical depth matters more than sales headcount at the early-commercial stage. The local base appears weighted towards firms still proving repeatable demand, with a thinner layer of businesses that have already moved into larger contract delivery.
Oversight sits around the technology and its use case rather than a single deep-tech licence. AI is being handled through a sector-specific UK model, while engineering biology has the Engineering Biology Regulators Network, regulatory sandboxes and the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act. Cyber activity is linked to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill and secure-by-design policy. Quantum and semiconductor activity is shaped more by national strategies, public funding and standards than by one licensing regime. For Glasgow firms, the practical burden is often demonstrating safety, assurance and procurement readiness to specialist buyers.
The Glasgow cohort appears likely to remain research-led, with commercial progress shaped by patient procurement, technical assurance and access to specialist talent. Firms selling into health, energy, security or industrial settings tend to face longer validation cycles than conventional software suppliers, but those same cycles can create defensible customer relationships once systems are embedded. The scale-up layer looks comparatively thin, so partnerships with universities, public-sector buyers and larger industrial customers will matter. Consolidation may also occur where hardware, compliance and deployment costs make standalone growth difficult.

Key facts
About 4% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (5 of 122 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
25% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (31 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Deep tech oversight is technology- and use-case-specific rather than a single licensing regime, so obligations depend on product, buyer and deployment context.
UK policy priority areas cover advanced connectivity, AI, cyber security, engineering biology, quantum technologies and semiconductors.
Engineering biology is shaped by the Engineering Biology Regulators Network, regulatory sandboxes and the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act.
UK deep tech venture investment has slowed from its 2021 peak but still consistently attracts over £5 billion in annual venture capital.
Domestic investor participation falls from 57% at seed stage to under 10% at late stage, with later rounds relying more heavily on overseas capital.

How Glasgow deep tech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Glasgow deep-tech firms usually monetise technical IP through a mix of paid pilots, contract development, licence fees, component sales and longer-term support. Some sell physical systems or specialist hardware, while others package algorithms, models, sensing capability or research workflows into software platforms. Pricing is often milestone-led at the start: feasibility work, prototype access, integration services and validation studies come before repeat subscription or volume-based revenue. Gross margins can vary widely because hardware, lab work and specialist implementation pull costs into delivery. For sellers, the commercial model often looks less like standard SaaS and more like technical solution selling with a product roadmap behind it.
Who they sell to
Typical customers are mid-market and enterprise organisations with technical problems that off-the-shelf tools do not address, plus public-sector teams with research, health, security, energy or infrastructure mandates. Buying committees tend to include a technical sponsor, product or operations leadership, procurement, finance and, where deployment risk is high, legal or compliance teams. Early contracts often begin as proofs of concept or funded trials, then move into licensing, supply, integration or managed-service agreements if the technology proves usable. Procurement is usually direct and relationship-led, although public bodies and larger industrial buyers may push suppliers through tenders, framework routes or formal technical assurance.
What they buy
Most deep-tech firms tend to spend on tools and services that help them prove, protect and commercialise technical work. Common buying areas include cloud compute, developer tooling, observability, cyber security, test environments, laboratory and prototyping equipment, design and simulation software, quality management, CRM, finance systems and contract management. Services spend often covers IP advice, regulatory support, grant writing, specialist recruitment, outsourced finance, technical marketing and enterprise sales support. Hardware-heavy firms may also need electronics design, manufacturing partners, calibration, logistics and insurance. The better fit is usually a vendor that can handle technical buyers, long evaluation periods and evidence-heavy purchasing rather than a simple volume-led sales motion.
Why and how to sell to them
Deep-tech buyers tend to evaluate vendors when research moves into customer deployment, when a pilot becomes a repeatable product, or when funders and customers start asking for clearer evidence of security, quality and delivery control. Other useful triggers include hiring a first commercial leader, opening procurement for test or manufacturing capacity, entering a regulated market, expanding engineering headcount, or moving from grant-funded work into contracted revenue. Outbound angles should be specific: reduce validation work, improve audit readiness, shorten test cycles, protect IP, support technical hiring or make enterprise procurement easier. Generic productivity claims are less persuasive than proof that the seller understands complex deployment risk.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
