Deep Tech Companies in London: 1,700+ Active Firms (2026)
Deep tech companies develop science-led technologies across AI, hardware, materials, health, energy and computing in London.
Buying centres tend to sit with chief technology officers, R&D heads, security teams, product leaders and clinical or industrial operations teams, rather than only with procurement. Sales motions are usually business-to-business and institution-led: enterprise buyers, government programmes, healthcare operators, manufacturers, infrastructure owners and specialist research groups. Typical engagements start as technical evaluations, paid pilots or integration projects, then move into licensing, subscription, hardware-plus-software supply or regulated service contracts. London firms in this category often need to translate defensible IP into buyer-specific proof, with sales cycles shaped by validation work, standards compliance and specialist implementation effort.
London has 1,754 active trading deep tech companies in this list, making it a sizeable urban concentration rather than a narrow research niche. Reported headcount totals 1,254 people, which points to a market where disclosed employment is concentrated in specialist technical teams and many firms remain at early-commercial or low-headcount stage. The buyer mix also means London’s sales base is broader than local demand, with public-sector, enterprise, healthcare and industrial customers often sitting outside the capital.
Deep tech sits across several UK regulatory lanes rather than a dedicated rulebook. AI governance is being handled through sector-specific regulators, while engineering biology brings in the Engineering Biology Regulators Network, sandbox mechanisms and the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act. Cyber activity is linked to secure-by-design policy and the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill. Quantum and semiconductor markets are more often shaped by national strategies, public funding and standards than by routine licensing. For London companies, the practical burden is usually mapping a technical product onto several customer regimes.
Commercialisation appears likely to remain uneven. AI, cyber and software-heavy categories tend to reach customers with lighter deployment burdens, while hardware, materials, quantum and regulated healthcare technologies face longer validation cycles and wider implementation commitments. London’s advantage is its proximity to capital, enterprise buyers, government users and clinical or infrastructure decision-makers, but that does not remove the gap between technical proof and repeatable revenue. Consolidation may favour businesses that can turn specialist research into standardised products, while research-led firms with bespoke delivery models may stay small or be absorbed into customer supply chains.

Key facts
About 2% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (51 of 1,754 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
30% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (528 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK government policy identifies six priority frontier technologies: advanced connectivity, AI, cyber security, engineering biology, quantum technologies and semiconductors.
Oversight is largely technology- and use-case-specific, with AI handled through a sector-specific model and engineering biology linked to the Engineering Biology Regulators Network, regulatory sandboxes and the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act.
Cyber activity is linked to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill and secure-by-design policy, while quantum and semiconductor policy is shaped mainly through national strategies, public funding and standards.
Royal Academy of Engineering reporting places the UK first in Europe and third globally for deep-tech venture capital raised, behind the USA and China.
Domestic investor participation falls from 57% at seed stage to under 10% at late stage, so later rounds rely more on overseas capital.

How London deep tech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from turning protected technical know-how into deployable software, models, hardware modules, data services, lab processes or engineering services. Pricing often mixes paid feasibility work, licence fees, usage-based access, per-device supply, maintenance and implementation support. Early contracts are often narrow, because customers want proof that a model, sensor, chip, workflow or biological process works inside their own operating environment. Gross margins vary by form: software-heavy firms can price like enterprise software, while hardware, materials and regulated healthcare businesses have to carry manufacturing, assurance, field support and quality costs in the commercial model.
Who they sell to
Customers are usually enterprise, public-sector, healthcare, industrial, infrastructure or research-led organisations with a specific technical constraint, not generalist SMBs browsing for tools. The internal champion is often a CTO, CISO, head of R&D, clinical lead, product owner or operations director, with finance and procurement joining once the evaluation becomes a contract. Contract values tend to range from paid proof-of-concept budgets to major supply, platform or licensing agreements, and sales cycles are usually measured in months rather than weeks. Direct technical sales matter, but frameworks, grant-funded consortia, systems integrator routes and RFPs can decide access to larger accounts.
What they buy
Most London deep tech firms tend to spend on the operating layer around research and deployment: cloud compute, data storage, model monitoring, observability, identity management, security testing, quality management, experiment tracking and technical documentation. Hardware and semiconductor teams add prototyping, test equipment, electronic design automation, specialist manufacturing and supply-chain services. Healthcare, biology and energy-related firms often need regulatory advice, clinical or industrial validation support, patent counsel and insurance. As commercial teams form, demand also moves into CRM, billing, revenue operations, partner management, recruitment, finance systems and marketing aimed at technical buyers rather than broad consumer demand.
Why and how to sell to them
Technical proof often creates the next budget problem for these companies: evidence management, repeatable deployment, security assurance, integration work and enough delivery capacity to serve enterprise or regulated customers. Buying intent tends to appear after a funding round, a first large customer win, a public-sector framework award, a clinical or industrial pilot, or the appointment of commercial, finance, security or compliance leadership. Outbound works better when tied to those milestones. Useful angles include shortening validation work, reducing implementation risk, making audit evidence easier to produce, protecting margin as delivery scales, or helping technical teams pass procurement without diluting the product roadmap.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
