Deep Tech Companies in Reading: 116 Active Firms (2026)
Deep tech companies develop science- and engineering-led technologies across AI, hardware, biology and energy in the Reading area.
Buying centres tend to sit with enterprise technology, security, R&D, operations and clinical or engineering teams rather than a unified software budget. Reading-area suppliers often sell into enterprise, industrial, public-sector and regulated-market customers, where evaluation is shaped by proof-of-concept work, technical validation, procurement risk and integration with existing infrastructure. Typical engagements are specialist SME or scale-up relationships: project-led deployments, licensing, engineering services, platform access, or hardware-linked supply arrangements. The common commercial thread is defensibility through technical expertise, intellectual property and hard-to-replicate deployment knowledge, rather than consumer reach or volume subscription sales.
Reading has 116 actively trading deep tech companies in this list, and reported headcount across the cohort totals 559. The composition is more specialist than scaled: only 2 companies sit above £5M turnover, while 21 were incorporated since 2022. That mix points to a local base weighted towards research-led commercialisation, subcontract engineering and early customer deployments, rather than a dense population of large revenue-reporting firms. For researchers comparing local clusters, the Reading picture is therefore less about volume than about a relatively compact set of technically specialised businesses serving enterprise, industrial and regulated buyers.
Oversight does not sit under a unified UK rulebook. AI applications are handled through sector-specific governance, so obligations tend to follow the customer domain as much as the model itself. Engineering biology businesses face a mix of biosafety, precision-breeding and sandbox-led supervision, including the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act and the Engineering Biology Regulators Network. Cyber security activity is shaped by secure-by-design policy and the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill. Quantum and semiconductor businesses are more often steered by national strategies, standards work and public funding conditions than by a licensing regime.
Commercial progress appears likely to depend on how well specialist teams convert technical proof into repeatable deployments. Reading’s base tends to look more early-commercial than mature-enterprise: many firms will need patient customers, standards work and sector-specific compliance capacity before revenue becomes less project-led. Scarcity at the scaled end may make partnerships, licensing and acquisition routes more common than stand-alone expansion for some teams. Regulatory pressure is unlikely to be uniform across the cohort, but firms selling into healthcare, cyber, infrastructure and public-sector settings should expect scrutiny to follow the use case rather than the technology label.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (2 of 116 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
18% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (21 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Government policy identifies six priority frontier technologies: advanced connectivity, AI, cyber security, engineering biology, quantum technologies and semiconductors.
Oversight is use-case-specific, with AI handled through a sector-specific model, engineering biology linked to the Engineering Biology Regulators Network and regulatory sandboxes, and cyber activity tied to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill.
UK deep-tech venture investment has cooled from its 2021 peak but still attracts over £5 billion in annual venture capital.
The UK AI sector had 5,862 firms, £23.9 billion of revenue, £11.8 billion of GVA and 86,139 employees in 2024.
Domestic investor participation falls from 57% at seed stage to under 10% at late stage, leaving later rounds more dependent on overseas capital.

How Reading Deep Tech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue in Reading deep tech tends to arrive through staged technical adoption rather than high-volume self-serve sales. Suppliers often begin with feasibility work, paid pilots, engineering support or funded collaboration, then move towards annual licences, platform access, maintenance, support, component supply or longer deployment programmes. Pricing is usually tied to risk and proof: fixed-fee studies, milestone contracts, day-rate specialist work, usage-linked compute or data access, and commercial licences for protected methods. Hardware-linked businesses may also earn from prototypes, test rigs, integration services and repeat supply once a customer has validated the design.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually technical or regulated-market sponsors with budget influence from CTOs, CIOs, CISOs, heads of R&D, engineering directors, clinical leads, operations teams and procurement. Most deals are direct-sales relationships, though public-sector and infrastructure customers may route buying through frameworks, formal tenders or partner-led delivery. Contract size tends to vary by maturity: early engagements sit in pilot or innovation budgets, while production deployments need security review, legal review, integration planning and a clearer business case. Sales cycles are therefore often measured in months rather than weeks, especially where the buyer must prove safety, resilience or compliance before rollout.
What they buy
Most Reading deep tech firms tend to spend on technical infrastructure, specialist talent and assurance rather than broad office tooling alone. Relevant categories include cloud and high-performance compute, data engineering, model monitoring, cyber security, identity management, observability, testing, simulation, certification support, electronic design, prototyping, lab services and secure collaboration software. Many also need IP advice, commercial contracts support, grant-writing, finance operations, recruitment for engineering roles, and marketing that can translate technical claims into buyer-specific evidence. Generic CRM, billing, HR and finance systems still matter, but the sharper entry point is often around validation, compliance, integration or repeatable delivery.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears when a prototype is moving into customer deployment, a technical team has won a regulated-market pilot, or a founder-led sales motion is becoming too informal for enterprise procurement. Other triggers include new senior technical or commercial hires, public funding conditions, standards work, security review, supply-chain pressure, or a shift from bespoke engineering to repeatable licensing. Sellers tend to get further when they lead with risk reduction, evidence capture, deployment control and buyer-side assurance. Claims about efficiency are less persuasive unless they connect to shorter validation cycles, fewer integration failures, or a clearer audit trail for customer approval.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
