E-commerce Companies in London: 22,000+ Active Firms (2026)
E-commerce companies sell goods or services through digital storefronts and online marketplaces, with this cohort based across London boroughs.
For suppliers and analysts, the buyer is rarely a single retail manager: decision-making usually spans marketing, merchandising, operations, finance and customer-service teams. Consumer-facing merchants dominate, but B2B wholesalers and digital-goods sellers also sit in the London cohort. Typical engagements are mid-market to enterprise in shape: catalogue migration, checkout conversion work, fulfilment integration, returns workflow and analytics stack review, rather than small brochure-site projects. Marketplace exposure also changes the operating model, with channel management, margin control and customer ownership sitting alongside the owned storefront.
London has 22,343 actively trading e-commerce companies, giving the capital a sizeable concentration of online retail, marketplace and direct-to-consumer operators. Reported headcount within the cohort totals 4,288, pointing to a market where many firms remain lean despite running operations that can span acquisition, checkout, fulfilment and returns. The capital’s role is partly commercial: it concentrates brand, media, finance and logistics buying relationships, while physical warehousing and delivery capacity may sit outside the borough where the company is headquartered.
Retail-facing online sellers work within a mixed compliance stack rather than a single sector regulator. Consumer cancellation and returns duties shape post-purchase operations; privacy and marketing-consent rules affect acquisition; payment security and fraud controls sit around checkout; tax and customs treatment matters for cross-border orders. Physical goods add product safety, packaging and carrier-service obligations, while digital goods and subscriptions bring their own renewal, refund and access issues. For London firms selling through marketplaces as well as owned channels, platform terms can be as commercially important as formal regulation.
Further cohort formation appears likely to cluster at the asset-light end of the market. The London base tends to favour marketing-led brands, marketplace sellers and digitally native retailers that can test demand before taking on warehousing or store commitments. Scale remains harder: paid acquisition costs, return rates and fulfilment complexity can expose weak unit economics before revenue looks mature. Consolidation appears more plausible around category specialists, subscription-led models and operators with repeat-purchase behaviour. Data quality, consent management and customer-service automation are also moving from back-office concerns into board-level procurement decisions.

How London E-commerce companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
London e-commerce companies usually earn revenue from product margin, transaction fees, subscriptions, marketplace commission or digital access charges. Physical-goods sellers price at SKU and order level, with delivery, returns and promotional funding affecting realised margin. Digital-goods sellers may use subscriptions, usage allowances or licence-style access, while marketplace operators often monetise seller services as well as buyer demand. The operating product is not just a website: it is a catalogue, checkout, payments, fulfilment, customer-service and analytics operation. Smaller firms may test categories through marketplaces before investing in owned channels; larger operators usually run several channels and reconcile margin across them.
Who they sell to
Most London e-commerce firms sell either to consumers making self-serve purchases or to business buyers ordering replenishment, merchandise, supplies or digital products. Consumer sales are usually short-cycle, driven by search, paid media, email and marketplace discovery; decision-making is individual, with trust, price, delivery and returns terms carrying weight. B2B orders more often involve procurement, finance, operations and category managers, particularly where account pricing, credit terms, integration with purchasing systems or repeated fulfilment is required. Enterprise-style contracts are less common than transactional buying, but larger merchants may negotiate annual supply terms, marketplace agreements and logistics partnerships through direct sales or formal procurement.
What they buy
Most e-commerce firms tend to spend on commerce platforms, payments orchestration, fraud screening, customer-service tooling, marketing attribution, analytics, stock control, order management, carrier management and returns workflows. The supporting services layer is also wide: product photography, copywriting, paid media, search, conversion-rate testing, finance, tax, customs advice, legal review and interim operations support. Larger operators usually care about systems integration between storefront, warehouse, accounting and customer-service functions, because margin leakage often sits between teams rather than inside one tool. Security, cloud hosting, uptime monitoring and data governance become more relevant as checkout volume and customer records accumulate.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent usually appears when acquisition costs rise, returns become a board-level issue, a finance leader wants clearer margin reporting, or an operations team is preparing for a new warehouse, marketplace expansion or cross-border launch. Leadership changes in marketing, technology or operations can also reopen vendor shortlists. Sellers should avoid retail theatre and speak in unit economics: conversion rate, basket profitability, stock accuracy, refund cycle time, customer-service load and paid-media efficiency. London e-commerce buyers tend to respond better to evidence that a supplier can reduce operational friction without disrupting checkout, fulfilment or customer ownership.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
