Deep Tech Companies in the UK: 7,300+ Active Firms (2026)
Deep tech companies in the UK commercialise science-led engineering, computing, hardware, health, energy and advanced connectivity innovations.
Buying centres tend to sit with CTO, R&D, product, clinical, operations or infrastructure teams rather than a single technology budget. Sales motions vary by application: enterprise and industrial buyers often start with paid pilots or integration work, while healthcare and public-sector customers usually need evidence, procurement sign-off and assurance before wider deployment. Engagements are typically higher-touch than ordinary software subscriptions, because the offer may combine proprietary research, specialist hardware, technical infrastructure, software and regulated scientific applications. The commercial pattern therefore favours teams that can translate research risk into procurement language without losing the underlying technical edge.
7,384 deep-tech firms are actively trading in the UK, giving the sector a sizeable but still specialist base rather than a broad software-style market. Within that cohort, 222 report turnover above £5M, so revenue scale remains concentrated among a relatively small set of firms. Newer formation is visible too: 1,508 were incorporated since 2022, pointing to continued company creation around research-led computing, engineering, health and industrial use cases. The reported employment footprint is 2,896 people, which suggests many firms remain small technical teams even where their end markets are enterprise, public sector or regulated healthcare.
Oversight is usually determined by application rather than by a single deep-tech licence. AI-related activity sits within the UK’s sector-specific policy model, while engineering biology has a more defined regulatory support structure through the Engineering Biology Regulators Network, regulatory sandboxes and the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act. Cyber security work is tied to secure-by-design expectations and the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill. Quantum, semiconductor and advanced-connectivity activity is shaped more by national strategies, public funding programmes, technical standards and export-sensitive supply chains than by a single conduct rulebook.
Commercial progress appears likely to depend on evidence quality as much as technical novelty. The cohort has a visible early-commercial weight, and scale-up scarcity tends to matter because hardware, lab work, safety cases and specialist talent all consume capital before repeatable revenue is proven. Enterprise and public-sector procurement can slow adoption, but it can also create defensible reference customers where the technology solves a costly operational problem. Consolidation may come through larger industrial, healthcare and infrastructure buyers absorbing specialist capability, rather than through pure software-style land grabs.

Key facts
About 3% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (222 of 7,384 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
20% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (1,508 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Deep tech is not a single regulated industry in the UK; oversight usually follows the technology and use case, from AI governance to engineering biology, cyber security, quantum and semiconductors.
UK government policy names advanced connectivity, AI, cyber security, engineering biology, quantum technologies and semiconductors as priority frontier technologies.
UK deep tech venture investment has slowed from its 2021 peak but still attracts over £5 billion a year in venture capital.
Domestic investor participation falls from 57% at seed stage to under 10% at late stage, leaving later rounds more dependent on overseas capital.
The UK ranks first in Europe and third globally for deep-tech venture capital raised, behind the USA and China.

How UK deep tech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue is usually earned through a mix of paid research and development programmes, pilots, licence fees, usage-based platform access, specialist hardware sales, maintenance, and integration services. Many deep-tech firms do not look like pure software vendors: product revenue may sit alongside grant-funded work, customer-funded validation, lab or compute capacity, and technical consultancy. Early contracts often pay for feasibility, test environments or prototype deployment, while later accounts move towards annual licences, supply agreements, service-level contracts or embedded technology fees. Pricing tends to reflect technical risk, assurance work and deployment effort rather than simple seat counts.
Who they sell to
Most sell to enterprise, industrial, healthcare, infrastructure or public-sector buyers where the purchaser needs a technical, operational or scientific reason to change supplier. Decisions are commonly shared between CTO, R&D, product, clinical, operations, procurement, security and finance teams, rather than owned by one budget holder. Typical deal cycles are measured in months rather than weeks, especially where safety, assurance, integration or public procurement is involved. Direct sales is common for complex deployments, while RFPs, partner channels and paid trials matter where the buyer needs proof before committing to wider rollout.
What they buy
Most deep-tech firms tend to spend on engineering tooling, cloud and compute capacity, model evaluation, lab and test equipment, security, identity, compliance management, CRM, grant and finance operations, IP and commercial legal advice, specialist recruitment, technical marketing, public-sector bid support, manufacturing partners, and quality management systems. Hardware-led teams often add prototyping, component sourcing, certification, facilities and field-service systems; software-led teams lean more towards developer tooling, observability, data pipelines and customer success platforms. Anything that reduces evidence-gathering effort, deployment friction or audit burden is easier to frame than a generic productivity pitch.
Why and how to sell to them
Deep-tech buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when a research prototype becomes customer-facing, a pilot needs to become repeatable, a regulated use case requires evidence, or a new enterprise account creates security and procurement demands. Funding, grant awards, hiring in product, compliance or operations, and movement from lab validation to field deployment are useful intent signals. Outbound usually works better when it is anchored to a specific bottleneck: shortening validation cycles, reducing engineering rework, preparing for customer assurance, protecting IP, or turning bespoke delivery into repeatable implementation. Generic scale-up language tends to land badly with technical founders.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
