SaaS Companies in Cambridge: 300+ Active Firms (2026)
Software-as-a-service companies sell subscription-priced cloud applications to businesses, with this cohort based in and around Cambridge.
Buying centres in Cambridge skew towards workflow software for specialist business users, developer and infrastructure tooling, and applications sold into public-sector or regulated settings. The typical buyer is not a consumer; it is an operations, finance, product or compliance team looking for recurring cloud delivery, product-led implementation and continuing support. Engagements tend to sit between self-serve small-business subscriptions and enterprise transformation projects: lower mid-market contracts, shorter implementation cycles, and procurement questions around data handling rather than bespoke systems integration.

Cambridge has 396 actively trading SaaS companies in this cohort, making it a compact but visible cluster within the UK software market. Reported headcount across the group totals 1,246 employees, so the employment footprint is sizeable without looking like a mass-employer sector. Only 9 firms report turnover above £5M, while 80 were incorporated since 2022, pointing to a population weighted towards early-commercial suppliers and a much thinner layer of revenue-scale companies. That shape fits Cambridge’s mix of technical founding teams, specialist buyers and exportable software niches.
SaaS suppliers are not generally licensed as a sector in their own right. Exposure usually comes through what the software does and who buys it: data protection for hosted customer information, cyber security expectations, consumer or contract law, and sector-specific obligations where clients operate in regulated markets. The ICO remains the main UK data-protection regulator, with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act shaping processor and controller duties. Cloud dependency also matters. UK competition authorities have scrutinised public cloud infrastructure services, finding competition concerns and remedies at the infrastructure layer, without turning SaaS provision itself into a licensing regime.
Cambridge’s SaaS outlook appears shaped by a long tail of product-led suppliers and a thinner layer of revenue-scale firms. Buyers in regulated and public-sector settings tend to ask more detailed questions about security, auditability and data residency, which favours vendors able to document controls without turning each deployment into consultancy. Consolidation has been more plausible around vertical workflow categories and infrastructure-adjacent tools than around broad horizontal applications. The constraint is less demand for cloud software than the familiar route from specialist product-market fit to repeatable sales, support and governance processes.

Key facts
About 2% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (9 of 396 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
20% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (80 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UK SaaS suppliers are not generally licensed as a single sector; regulatory exposure usually follows the activity, client sector and type of data processed.
Providers processing personal data need to consider UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 obligations under the ICO.
Cloud-dependent SaaS sits within the CMA’s public-cloud competition work, closed on 31 July 2025, which reported an adverse effect on competition and led to remedies.
UK market context includes about 100,000 software companies, with SaaS described as one of the UK’s largest ICT markets.
The UK is described as the second largest ICT market by ICT spending per head after the US, and as the No. 1 destination for U.S. ICT businesses in Europe.

How Cambridge SaaS companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Cambridge SaaS suppliers usually earn through recurring subscriptions, with tiers tied to seats, usage, data volumes or modules. Some add onboarding, support, training, integration and compliance documentation as paid services, particularly where customers work in regulated or public-sector settings. The product is usually hosted software rather than bespoke development: workflow applications, developer tools, analytics layers or operational platforms maintained as a single code base. Smaller accounts may buy monthly by card or invoice, while lower mid-market customers tend to expect annual contracts, service levels and review points.
Who they sell to
Most sell to business teams rather than consumers, with buyers split across SMB operators, lower mid-market firms, public bodies and specialist departments inside larger enterprises. The internal sponsor is often a Head of Operations, Product Lead, Engineering Manager, Finance Director, CTO or compliance owner, depending on the workflow being replaced. Procurement is usually direct-sales or inbound-led for mid-market accounts, with partner referrals where the software sits near consultancy, managed services or public-sector frameworks. Sales cycles often run for weeks rather than quarters, unless data residency, security assurance, accessibility or legacy integration reviews pull in procurement and legal teams.
What they buy
Most Cambridge SaaS firms tend to spend on tools that help a lean team build, ship, secure and support a subscription product. Likely categories include cloud hosting, developer tooling, observability, testing, incident management, identity and access management, security monitoring, backup, analytics, billing, revenue operations, CRM, customer support, product adoption, finance, HR and recruitment. Services spend often clusters around accounting, tax, commercial contracts, privacy advice, penetration testing, technical content, performance marketing and specialist hiring. Firms selling into regulated customers may also buy audit support, policy templates and evidence-management tools so security questionnaires do not consume the product team.
Why and how to sell to them
SaaS buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a repeatable sales motion starts to expose manual work: more onboarding calls, longer security questionnaires, delayed invoice collection, support backlogs or unreliable usage reporting. Other triggers include a funding event, a new finance or technology leader, hiring across sales and customer success, first public-sector procurement, or movement from founder-led support to documented operations. Outbound works better when it links to one of those inflection points and uses the buyer's own risk language: lower churn, shorter implementation, cleaner audit evidence, fewer manual renewals, or clearer unit economics. Generic productivity claims are easy to ignore.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
