AI & ML Companies in London: 900+ Active Firms (2026)
AI and machine learning companies in London build data-driven software, models and automation tools for commercial and public-sector use.
Buying centres in this London cohort cluster around finance and professional-services workflow, sector-specific automation, analytics, and developer or infrastructure tooling. Buyers are usually B2B or public-sector teams rather than consumers: risk, compliance, operations, product, customer-service and technology leaders commissioning tools that need to sit inside existing systems. Engagements tend to be subscriptions, enterprise licences, managed services or consultancy-led implementations, with procurement shaped by data access, governance, model explainability and support obligations. The commercial centre of gravity is growth-stage and mid-market, though some suppliers remain specialist product teams serving a narrow vertical from a London technical or sales base.
London has 970 actively trading AI and ML companies in this cohort. Reported employment totals 2,512 people, giving the capital a visible specialist workforce but not a proxy for every contractor, adviser or implementation partner around it. Turnover is unevenly distributed: 132 sit above £5M revenue, while 184 were incorporated since 2022. That mix points to a market with a sizeable long tail of younger or smaller operators alongside a thinner revenue-ranked tier selling into enterprise, regulated-sector and public-service buying processes.
The UK’s current approach relies on existing legal and supervisory regimes rather than a dedicated AI statute. GOV.UK guidance frames cross-cutting principles around safety and security, transparency and explainability, fairness, accountability and governance, and contestability and redress; adoption remains voluntary and depends on each regulator’s remit. For London suppliers, the practical burden therefore varies by use case. Credit decisioning, clinical support, workforce analytics and consumer-facing automation can trigger different obligations under data protection, financial services, healthcare, product safety or employment rules, even when the underlying model engineering looks similar.
London’s cohort appears tilted toward applied, commercial AI rather than research-only labs. Buyers are likely to keep asking for clearer evidence of model governance, data lineage, bias testing and human oversight, especially where outputs affect regulated or high-liability decisions. That tends to favour suppliers able to pair software with domain expertise and implementation support. Earlier-stage firms may find general-purpose tooling crowded, while vertical workflow, audit, monitoring and decision-support niches look better aligned with procurement reality. Consolidation has been a plausible route where sales cycles are long and customer trust takes time to build.

Key facts
About 13% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (132 of 970 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
18% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (184 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The UK does not currently regulate AI through a single, dedicated AI statute; GOV.UK’s 2024 regulator guidance describes the five principles as voluntary and implemented at regulators’ discretion.
AI suppliers may face different obligations by use case, including data protection, financial services, healthcare, product safety and employment rules.
GOV.UK’s Artificial Intelligence sector study 2024 estimated the wider UK AI sector at more than 5,800 companies, up 85% over two years.
The same study put 2024 AI revenue at £23.9 billion and GVA at £11.8 billion, with dedicated AI company investment of £2.9 billion.
Stanford HAI’s 2024 AI Index attributed 61 notable AI models in 2023 to US-based institutions, compared with 21 from the European Union.

How London AI & ML companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
London AI and ML suppliers usually earn revenue by packaging models, workflow automation or analytics into business software rather than selling research alone. Commercial models tend to mix annual subscriptions, enterprise licences, managed services and consultancy-led implementation, especially where a customer needs help connecting internal systems, preparing training material or setting governance rules. Smaller engagements often start as pilots or departmental deployments, then expand if accuracy, auditability and workflow fit are proven. Pricing is usually tied to seats, usage, modules or a scoped statement of work, with support and model monitoring treated as part of the commercial promise rather than an afterthought.
Who they sell to
Most customers are business, government or regulated-sector teams with defined operational problems rather than consumer audiences. Typical sponsors include risk, compliance, operations, product, customer-service and technology leaders, while procurement, legal and information-security teams often shape the timetable. Direct sales is common for mid-market and enterprise accounts, with consultancy-style scoping before a paid pilot or licence. Public-service and regulated-sector deals tend to involve RFPs, supplier questionnaires and evidence on governance, explainability, data protection and support. Sales cycles are therefore often less about model novelty and more about whether the supplier can survive diligence and fit into existing workflows.
What they buy
Most London AI and ML firms tend to spend on cloud infrastructure, data engineering, security, privacy tooling, model monitoring, developer workflow and analytics. Commercial teams also need CRM, billing, customer success, sales intelligence and marketing operations software once pilots turn into recurring accounts. Firms selling into finance, healthcare, professional services, retail, logistics or public services usually need legal, compliance, accounting and procurement support, because customer diligence can be as demanding as the technical build. Recruitment and contractor services matter where teams need machine learning engineers, data scientists, product managers and implementation specialists, though many buyers will be cautious on fixed costs until revenue is repeatable.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when an AI supplier moves from prototype to production, wins a larger regulated customer, enters a public-sector process or has to evidence model governance in more detail. Other triggers include new senior hires, headcount expansion, international sales activity, funding events and rising cloud costs. Outbound messages tend to land better when they connect to diligence, deployment risk, integration effort or revenue conversion, rather than generic claims about AI adoption. Sellers should expect technical and commercial scrutiny: buyers will ask how a tool reduces implementation workload, shortens security review, improves customer retention or helps satisfy governance expectations.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
