Data Analytics Companies in Cambridge: 62 Active Firms (2026)
Data analytics companies in Cambridge build data platforms, reporting tools and analytical services for organisations across the city's science and technology base.
Buying centres tend to sit with chief data, finance, operations and research teams, rather than a single IT owner. Cambridge providers usually sell into B2B customers whose work depends on governed information flows: research-intensive organisations, technology firms, public-sector bodies and national enterprises with analytical estates to maintain. Engagements often start as scoped data engineering, dashboarding or model-development projects, then move into managed analytics, reporting support or retained advisory work. Procurement tends to favour evidence of delivery, privacy controls, secure handling and the ability to work across UK customers while supporting international transfers where required.

Cambridge has 62 actively trading data analytics companies, a compact local cohort with a visible commercial tier. Reported employment totals 802 people across these firms. Turnover remains concentrated: 7 companies are above £5M, leaving most of the cohort below that threshold and closer to consultancy, product-services or early-commercial software models. Recent formation is present but not dominant, with 6 firms incorporated since 2022. For researchers, that mix suggests a market with several established operators and a longer tail of small specialist teams selling analytical capability into larger customer organisations.
Regulation is activity-led rather than licence-led. Providers handling personal information sit under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act, with the ICO as the relevant UK regulator. Work involving special category data, automated decision-making or profiling brings extra safeguards, so buyers tend to ask about lawful basis, fairness, purpose limitation, minimisation, accuracy, retention and security before analytics work reaches production. Cross-border personal-data transfers also matter for Cambridge suppliers serving customers outside the UK; common transfer routes include International Data Transfer Agreements, Standard Contractual Clauses, Binding Corporate Rules and adequacy regulations.
Commercial development appears likely to favour providers that can combine domain fluency with repeatable delivery rather than generic analytics capacity. Cambridge’s research and technology customer base tends to create complicated inputs, sensitive governance questions and buyers with high expectations for validation. Many suppliers may therefore stay services-led, using product components to improve margins without becoming pure software vendors. Scale-up scarcity also points to selective consolidation: larger consultancies and platform operators can absorb teams with credible sector knowledge, while smaller firms continue to win work where trust, proximity and specialist methods matter.

Key facts
About 11% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (7 of 62 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
9% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (6 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Personal-data analytics work is governed by UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, with the ICO as the UK data-protection regulator.
Special category data, automated decision-making, profiling and cross-border transfers bring additional safeguards, including International Data Transfer Agreements, Standard Contractual Clauses, Binding Corporate Rules and adequacy regulations.
GOV.UK estimated 9,600 active, registered data-driven companies in 2023, split between 5,500 specialised data infrastructure or software-development services and 4,100 broader data consultancy or management services.
GOV.UK estimated that data-driven companies generated £343 billion in annual turnover in 2023 and contributed £84.9 billion, or 3.8%, in GVA.
The 2024 UK Business Data Survey found that 9% of businesses handling digitised data transferred data internationally; this rose to 36% for large businesses and 26% for medium-sized businesses.

How Cambridge Data Analytics companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Cambridge data analytics firms usually earn revenue through a blend of project fees, retained services and recurring access to analytics assets. The common commercial shape is services-led: data pipelines, reporting layers, predictive models, governance reviews and managed reporting rather than a single packaged application. Some providers add subscription-priced portals, reusable model components or licence-style access to hosted dashboards, but implementation and interpretation still carry much of the value. Engagements often start with a scoped proof of value or migration project, then expand into support, monitoring, model refreshes and advisory work once the customer trusts the outputs.
Who they sell to
Most customers are organisations with existing analytical estates rather than first-time software buyers: research-led businesses, technology firms, public-sector teams and larger commercial operators with messy operational information. The buyer group is usually mixed, with a data or analytics sponsor joined by finance, operations, security, procurement and legal. Smaller assignments can be bought directly by a departmental owner; larger programmes tend to involve security questionnaires, procurement review and, in public-sector work, framework or tender processes. Contract value is usually tied to scope, risk and duration, so sales cycles are shorter for dashboard or audit work and longer where production data, personal information or cross-border processing is involved.
What they buy
Most Cambridge analytics providers tend to buy around delivery capacity, data access and client assurance. Likely categories include cloud hosting, database and warehouse infrastructure, integration tooling, analytics workbench software, workflow management, version control, testing, documentation and reporting tools. Firms handling personal information also need security, identity, access management, privacy operations, legal review and insurance support. As they move from consultancy projects into managed analytics, spend often shifts towards monitoring, observability, billing, customer success processes and account management. Recruitment, contractor sourcing and specialist training also matter, because scarce delivery skills can limit how much work a small team can take on.
Why and how to sell to them
Data analytics buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when delivery risk becomes visible: a new enterprise customer asks for tighter assurance, a public-sector bid raises evidence requirements, or a project moves from one-off analysis into production reporting. Useful outbound angles are usually specific to that trigger. A security, privacy or legal provider can lead with audit readiness and UK GDPR evidence; an infrastructure or tooling seller can focus on reducing manual work and failed data jobs; a recruitment or services firm can speak to delivery bottlenecks. Generic claims about better insight are less persuasive than proof that the seller understands governed datasets, customer diligence and margin pressure.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
