Aviation Companies in the UK: 3,234 Active Firms (2026)
Aviation companies in the UK operate, support and supply air transport, airport services and regulated flight operations.
Buying centres tend to sit with operations directors, airport commercial teams, safety and compliance functions, engineering managers and logistics heads rather than a single software-style procurement owner. Suppliers sell into airlines, airports, freight handlers, travel intermediaries, public-sector aviation bodies and aerospace-adjacent customers, with contracts shaped by safety cases, slot access, groundhandling capacity, maintenance schedules and service-level penalties. Engagements are often asset-heavy and site-specific: an airport services provider may price around operational coverage and trained staff, while maintenance, training or specialist supply-chain providers tend to be assessed on approvals, uptime and audit history.
The UK cohort contains 3,234 actively trading aviation companies, making it a relatively concentrated market compared with broad business-services categories but still varied by operating model. Only 100 have turnover above £5M, so most appear to sit below mid-market revenue scale or operate in specialist niches where headcount and assets matter more than Companies House sales thresholds. Reported employment across aviation companies totals 4,352 people, concentrated in airport, engineering, logistics and compliance roles rather than purely administrative functions. A further 718 have been incorporated since 2022, which points to continuing formation in flight support, supply-chain and regulated services despite high authorisation and insurance burdens.
UK aviation sits under the Civil Aviation Authority, a public corporation of the Department for Transport, rather than a patchwork of local licensing regimes. The CAA’s remit spans aviation safety, airspace policy, economic regulation of specified major airports, airline licensing, financial fitness and ATOL financial protection for holidaymakers. Operators and suppliers may also touch rules on security, slots, insurance, groundhandling and dangerous goods, depending on their activity. That structure makes regulatory clearance part of market access: even support-services firms tend to sell credibility around approvals, audit trails, safety management and operational resilience, not just price.
Expansion appears more likely to come from specialised capacity than from a wave of broad new entrants. The cohort includes many smaller service providers, while regulated operating models, insurance costs and airport access tend to favour businesses that can document safety performance and retain skilled staff. Consolidation may therefore be more visible in ground operations, maintenance, training and logistics support than in passenger-facing airline activity. For most UK suppliers the nearer-term commercial test is narrow: securing contracts where compliance, asset availability and labour scheduling can be evidenced reliably.

Key facts
About 3% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (100 of 3,234 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
22% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (718 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The Civil Aviation Authority regulates UK aviation safety, airspace policy, specified major-airport economics, airline licensing, financial fitness and ATOL protection.
The CAA framework references the Civil Aviation Act 1982, Air Navigation Order 2016, Rules of the Air 2015 and Dangerous Goods Regulations 2002.
UK air transport directly contributed £14 billion to GDP in 2023, while aviation and aerospace together contribute around £100 billion to UK GDP.
258.5 million international passengers travelled to or from UK airports in 2024, slightly above 2019 levels; 70% were to or from Europe and 10% to or from North America.
GOV.UK describes the UK as having the third largest aviation network in the world after the United States and China, with London’s airports serving more routes than any other European city.

How UK Aviation companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a mix of contracted service fees, usage-linked charges and regulated operating activity. Operators may price by flight, route, block hour, seat, cargo movement or charter commitment, while airport services and ground operations are more likely to bill for staffed coverage, turnarounds, equipment use and service levels. Maintenance, training and specialist supply-chain providers sell work packages, approved courses, spares support or retained capacity. Margins are often tied to asset utilisation and rostering discipline rather than pure software volume, so buyers examine reliability, insurance position, safety history and the cost of failure before they compare day rates.
Who they sell to
Most suppliers sell into a narrow set of operational buyers: airlines, airports, freight handlers, travel intermediaries, public-sector aviation bodies and aerospace-adjacent customers. Decision teams typically include operations, engineering, safety, procurement, finance and legal, with senior sign-off where safety cases, passenger disruption or regulated licences are involved. Contract values tend to be set by site coverage, aircraft type, passenger or freight volume and liability exposure rather than seat licences. Smaller engagements can start through direct commercial conversations or approved-supplier lists; larger airport, cargo and maintenance contracts tend to move through tender processes, site visits, audits and trial periods.
What they buy
Most aviation firms tend to spend on systems and services that reduce operational variance: workforce planning, rostering, training management, asset maintenance, safety reporting, document control, incident management and audit preparation. Commercial teams may buy revenue management, contract management, billing, customer communications and analytics where passenger or cargo volumes drive pricing. Support functions still need ordinary business tooling, including finance systems, HR, payroll, recruitment, cyber security, insurance advice, legal support and accounting. Physical procurement can be just as relevant as software, especially ground support equipment, facilities maintenance, parts logistics, testing equipment and site services around airport operations.
Why and how to sell to them
Aviation buyers tend to evaluate vendors when an operational constraint becomes visible: a new airport contract, a maintenance backlog, a safety audit, a change in CAA-facing responsibility, a shortage of trained staff or a service-level failure. Outbound messages usually land better when they show familiarity with regulated operations rather than broad efficiency claims. Useful angles include reducing audit effort, evidencing staff competence, shortening turnaround processes, improving asset availability, controlling overtime and keeping customer communications consistent during disruption. Proof matters; case-style evidence by operating model, approval type and site environment is usually more persuasive than generic ROI language.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
