Beauty Companies in Birmingham: 1,700+ Active Firms (2026)
Beauty companies in Birmingham manufacture, distribute and retail cosmetics, toiletries and treatment services across the metropolitan area.
Buying activity tends to split between brand-led personal care ranges, wholesale and distribution desks, contract manufacturing, specialist retail, and treatment premises that need local licensing. The customer base is mixed: local consumers for salons and clinics, independent retailers and online sellers for branded ranges, and mid-market buyers for manufacturing or distribution work. Engagements are usually modest in headcount but operationally detailed, with lean teams covering formulation, sourcing, packaging, channel sales and compliance. Firms with their own labels carry a different risk profile from service-led operators, because product safety files, responsible-person duties and pre-market notification sit alongside normal stock and margin management.
Birmingham has 1,791 actively trading beauty and personal care firms in this list. The cohort’s reported headcount is 790 people, so the employment footprint appears concentrated in small teams rather than large sites. The company base is broad but shallow by reported turnover: 4 firms sit above £5M, while 786 were incorporated since 2022. That leaves a large early-commercial tail around a small set of larger operators, which fits a market where local service premises, niche retail, distribution and brand ownership often sit beside one another rather than forming a single supply chain.
Cosmetic products placed on the GB market have to be backed by a UK-established Responsible Person. That role carries the safety assessment, Product Information File, notification to the Office for Product Safety and Standards, good manufacturing practice and serious harmful effects reporting obligations. The structure matters for Birmingham operators because a distributor or brand owner can become the responsible party even when production is outsourced. Service businesses face a different local regime: premises offering massage, manicure, sunbed, electrolysis, heat, light or vapour treatments may need council licensing, while skin-piercing treatments are usually handled through separate local registration.
Future change appears more likely to come from compliance discipline and channel mix than from a simple rise in salon count. Younger brand owners tend to test demand through online retail, wholesale and small-batch production before taking on premises or manufacturing capacity. Larger operators may continue to absorb distribution, packaging and fulfilment tasks where margin pressure makes narrow channel models harder to defend. Regulatory pressure also favours firms that can keep safety files, notifications and supplier evidence current; smaller service-led businesses may remain local and owner-managed, with periodic consolidation around premises, licences and customer books.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (4 of 1,791 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
43% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (786 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Cosmetic products available to consumers in Great Britain must have a UK-established Responsible Person, a Product Information File, a qualified safety assessment and OPSS notification before sale.
GOV.UK says cosmetic manufacturing must comply with good manufacturing practice, with ISO 22716 cited as one way to demonstrate this.
Beauty-service premises offering massage or special treatments may need a council premises licence; examples include manicure, sunbeds, electrolysis and heat, light or vapour treatments.
GB toiletries and beauty sales reached £10.3 billion in 2024, up +8.4% year-on-year, while category volumes were relatively flat.
The British Beauty Council reported a direct UK GDP contribution of £13.5 billion in 2023, rising to £27.2 billion including supply-chain and employee-spending effects.

How Birmingham Beauty companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Birmingham beauty companies usually earn through a mix of appointment revenue, product margins, wholesale mark-ups and manufacturing fees. Service operators sell treatments at the point of booking, with revenue tied to chair utilisation, staff availability and repeat visits. Product-led firms make money through owned-label ranges, resale, distribution or private-label production for other sellers, often with minimum order quantities, batch costs and packaging choices shaping margin. Contract manufacturers and fulfilment desks look more like operational services businesses: they charge for production runs, storage, picking, packing and sometimes compliance administration. Cash flow can be lumpy where inventory has to be bought before online, retail or wholesale demand is proven.
Who they sell to
Most sell either to local consumers, independent retailers, online sellers, salons, clinics or mid-market buying teams that need a repeat supply of finished goods. In consumer services, the decision-maker is often the owner-manager and the sale is won through locality, availability and reviews rather than formal procurement. Product and distribution businesses usually deal with founders, category buyers, operations directors, finance leads and, for larger customers, procurement teams. Sales cycles tend to be short for treatments and replenishment orders, but longer where a buyer needs sampling, safety documentation, packaging approval, credit terms or supplier onboarding before committing to a range.
What they buy
Beauty firms tend to spend on tools that reduce manual coordination across bookings, stock, payments, customer communications and repeat purchasing. Service premises buy booking systems, EPOS, payroll, staff scheduling, local marketing, insurance and payment processing. Product-led operators add e-commerce systems, inventory management, warehouse workflows, batch traceability, labelling support, quality documentation, finance software and outsourced accounting. Firms selling through wholesale or online channels may also need product photography, performance marketing, packaging design, fulfilment, returns handling and legal advice on claims, contracts and consumer terms. Recruitment support is relevant where treatment staff, warehouse operators or commercial hires are hard to keep.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when a firm moves from ad hoc sales to repeatable operations: a new range, a wholesale account, a premises move, a distribution relationship or a hiring plan can all expose process gaps. Pain points tend to sit around margin visibility, cash tied up in stock, compliance evidence, supplier delays, appointment no-shows and inconsistent customer retention. Outbound messages usually land better when they refer to a specific operating pressure rather than generic growth: fewer manual compliance checks, clearer batch and stock control, better utilisation of treatment rooms, cleaner handover between online sales and fulfilment, or less time spent reconciling payments and invoices.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
