Construction Companies in the UK: 243,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Construction companies in the UK build, refurbish and maintain residential, commercial and infrastructure assets under CDM, CIS and product-safety rules.
Buying centres tend to sit with developers, asset owners, housing associations, facilities teams and public-sector procurement, with delivery controlled by quantity surveyors, project managers and site managers. Work is bought through tenders, frameworks and subcontract packages rather than repeat licence-style spending. Engagements range from small refurbishment and maintenance jobs to multi-trade commercial fit-outs, civil engineering packages and longer infrastructure programmes. The sales problem is often less about supplier preference than evidencing safety competence, labour availability, insurance cover, creditworthiness and the ability to coordinate subcontractors without derailing the programme.

243,616 construction companies are actively trading in the UK, making this a wide contractor universe rather than a narrow set of national main contractors. A small revenue-qualified layer is visible above £5M turnover, with 4,678 operators in that band, while 57,541 were incorporated since 2022. Reported headcount totals 11,410 among firms that publish employee numbers. The shape is consistent with a market where many incorporated specialists sit alongside a smaller set of delivery businesses carrying payroll, insurance and project-balance-sheet risk.
UK construction sits across several rulebooks rather than a single sector licence. HSE’s Construction (Design and Management) Regulations place duties on clients, designers and contractors to plan work, appoint competent people, coordinate risks and consult workers. HMRC’s Construction Industry Scheme changes cash-flow behaviour by requiring contractors to deduct money from subcontractor payments and pass it to HMRC, with higher deductions where subcontractors are not registered. Construction products bring in the Office for Product Safety and Standards, which works with the Building Safety Regulator within HSE on building-safety-related issues.
Pressure on margins appears likely to keep the cohort fragmented. Small specialists tend to remain project-led, with growth constrained by working-capital cycles, labour availability and the need to evidence safety systems before taking larger packages. Better-capitalised contractors may keep using subcontract networks rather than adding permanent headcount, particularly where demand is uneven across private development, maintenance and public works. Product-safety scrutiny and building-safety duties should favour operators that can document procurement routes and site controls. Consolidation has been selective rather than broad-based, so the market is likely to retain a long tail of local and specialist firms.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (4,678 of 243,616 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
23% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (57,541 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
ONS construction statistics for Great Britain put new work at £140.7 billion in 2024, with new orders of £71.7 billion.
HSE’s Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 set duties across clients, designers and contractors, including planning, coordination and worker consultation.
HMRC’s Construction Industry Scheme requires contractors to deduct money from subcontractor payments and pass it to HMRC, with higher deductions for unregistered subcontractors.
OPSS regulates construction products and works with the Building Safety Regulator within HSE on building-safety-related issues.
Eurostat estimated construction production in August 2024 was down by 2.5% year on year in the euro area and down by 2.4% in the EU.

How UK construction companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from priced project delivery rather than recurring licences. Main contractors take fixed-price, design-and-build, framework call-off or cost-reimbursable work, then manage packages of labour, materials, plant and specialist subcontractors. Specialist trades tend to price by package, measured work, day rate or maintenance schedule. Cash is shaped by staged valuations, retentions, variations and payment terms, so a job that looks profitable at award can become thin if materials move, labour is delayed or scope changes are not captured. The offer is a mix of physical delivery, technical coordination and commercial risk-taking, with reputation built through programme reliability and defect control.
Who they sell to
Most construction firms sell to asset owners rather than end consumers: housebuilders, commercial landlords, industrial occupiers, local authorities, housing associations, infrastructure operators and facilities managers. Buying committees often include procurement, quantity surveying, project management, finance, health and safety, and technical design roles. Smaller jobs may be awarded through local relationships and repeat maintenance panels; larger packages usually pass through pre-qualification, tender clarification, insurance checks and contract negotiation. Sales cycles tend to follow project timetables, so timing matters. A supplier may be well liked, but still lose if it misses a framework window, cannot evidence comparable work or prices risk too cautiously.
What they buy
Most construction firms tend to spend on tools and services that reduce project leakage: estimating, take-off, job costing, document control, subcontractor management, health and safety, workforce scheduling, payroll, fleet, plant hire, procurement and finance systems. Credit control, CIS administration, insurance broking, legal support and contract claims advice also matter because cash collection and liability sit close to delivery. Larger operators may buy analytics for margin tracking across sites, while smaller contractors often prioritise bookkeeping, compliance templates, recruitment, training and mobile-first site reporting. Sellers should expect practical evaluation criteria: whether the offer fits existing workflows, reduces admin for site teams and can survive patchy adoption across subcontractor networks.
Why and how to sell to them
Construction buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when operational strain becomes visible: a larger contract win, entry onto a new framework, a failed audit, late subcontractor payments, rising defects, leadership change, insurance renewal or a move from local jobs into multi-site delivery. Outbound works better when it maps to a named commercial risk, such as margin loss through unmanaged variations, slow valuations, site documentation gaps or difficulty proving competence to clients. Generic efficiency claims usually land poorly. More credible angles quantify the cost of rework, delays, claims handling or manual administration, then show how the contractor can keep control without adding another burden for site managers.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
