Construction Companies in Cambridge: 1,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Construction companies in Cambridge build, refurbish and maintain residential, commercial and civic property across the city region.
Buying decisions usually sit with property owners, main contractors, estates teams and public-sector project sponsors rather than a single software-style buyer. Work is organised around packages: general contracting, refurbishment, fit-out, civil engineering, maintenance and specialist subcontracting. Engagements tend to be package-level tenders or relationship-led appointments, with delivery risk managed through site supervision, subcontractor coordination and staged payments. Cambridge-area suppliers therefore range from owner-managed trades businesses to contractors able to take on higher-value commercial, education, healthcare and civic property work across the city and its commuter towns.
Cambridge has 1,041 actively trading construction companies in this list, a local base that is broad but mostly small by reported turnover. Reported employment totals 1,060 people, with permanent staffing appearing lean across project-based delivery models. Turnover above £5M is reported by 15 businesses, so the revenue-ranked end is thin relative to the number of active contractors and subcontractors. The cohort also includes 193 incorporations since 2022, pointing to continued formation among small trade, maintenance and project-delivery businesses rather than a market dominated by long-established contractors.
UK construction sits under activity-based obligations rather than a single sector licence. HSE's Construction (Design and Management) Regulations place duties on clients, designers and contractors to plan work, appoint suitable people, coordinate site activity and consult workers. HMRC's Construction Industry Scheme shapes payment flows, with contractors responsible for deductions from subcontractor payments and higher deductions applying where subcontractors are not registered. The Office for Product Safety and Standards regulates construction products, while the Building Safety Regulator within HSE is the relevant reference point for building-safety-related issues.
Cambridge's construction market appears likely to remain fragmented, with many owner-managed trades and specialist subcontractors sitting below the revenue-ranked end. Project pipelines tend to follow local property, estates and public-sector maintenance cycles, so resilience is more likely to come from repeat relationships and disciplined subcontractor management than from headcount expansion. Compliance work around site safety, product assurance and payment deductions may keep administrative burdens high for smaller operators. Consolidation looks plausible where contractors need wider subcontractor coverage or steadier framework access, but the current shape still points to a long tail of local project businesses.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (15 of 1,041 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
18% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (193 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
HSE’s Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 set duties for planning work, appointing suitable people, coordinating activity and consulting workers.
HMRC’s Construction Industry Scheme requires contractors to deduct money from subcontractor payments and pass it to HMRC, with higher deductions for unregistered subcontractors.
OPSS regulates construction products and works with the Building Safety Regulator within HSE on building-safety-related issues.
ONS reported 370,770 VAT and PAYE registered construction firms in Quarter 3 2024, up 1.7% on 2023.
Eurostat estimated construction production in August 2024 was down by 2.5% year on year in the euro area and down by 2.4% in the EU.

How Cambridge construction companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Construction companies earn revenue from labour, materials, plant, subcontractor coordination and project management rather than from a repeatable digital product. Pricing usually comes through fixed-price tenders, measured works, schedule-of-rates maintenance agreements, day-rate labour, emergency call-outs and negotiated variations. Margin depends on estimating accuracy, buying materials well, controlling subcontractor costs and documenting change once site conditions depart from the original scope. Retentions, staged payments and certification cycles mean cash often arrives after costs have been incurred, so even profitable projects can create working-capital pressure. Smaller trades may rely on repeat local relationships, while larger contractors tend to carry more bidding, commercial and compliance overhead.
Who they sell to
Most Cambridge-area contractors sell to property owners, landlords, developers, main contractors, estates teams, facilities managers and public-sector project sponsors. The practical buyer is often a project manager, quantity surveyor, estates director, procurement lead or finance approver, with site managers and clerks of works shaping whether suppliers are invited back. Lower-value repair and maintenance work may be won through direct relationships or reactive call-outs, while refurbishment, civic property, education and healthcare work tends to involve pre-qualification, framework access, tender returns and evidence of insurances, safety processes and previous delivery. Sales cycles range from short maintenance decisions to longer funded project procurements.
What they buy
Most construction firms tend to spend on tools and services that help them price work, schedule labour, evidence compliance and keep cash moving. Relevant categories include estimating and tender management, project accounting, CIS administration, payroll, timesheets, job costing, document control, health and safety management, fleet and plant tracking, stock control, insurance, legal support and credit control. Firms with subcontractor-heavy delivery also need onboarding checks, training records, method statements, risk assessments and supplier payment workflows. Recruitment services can fit where contractors need site managers, quantity surveyors, contracts managers or specialist trades. Marketing spend is usually more practical than glossy: local search, tender portals, case-study material and bid writing.
Why and how to sell to them
Construction buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when admin starts to affect delivery: missed variations, disputed applications for payment, late subcontractor documentation, weak job-cost visibility or repeated rework on tender packs. Other triggers include a move into larger packages, a new framework, a finance hire, a contracts manager hire, rising insurance scrutiny, HSE attention, HMRC payment-process friction or a wider subcontractor bench. Outbound works better when it ties the offer to project risk, margin protection or evidencing compliance, rather than abstract efficiency. Sellers should expect practical objections around site adoption, cash timing and whether office staff have capacity to change process mid-project.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
