Defence Companies in the UK: 1,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Defence companies in the UK design, manufacture and support security-critical equipment, systems and services for public-sector and allied customers.
Buying centres tend to sit with defence procurement teams, security agencies, prime-contractor supply chains and operational technology owners rather than general corporate IT. Demand clusters around platform subsystems, secure communications, sensors, cyber and intelligence support, specialist manufacturing, maintenance and testing, with services often bundled into long-cycle programmes. Buyers are mostly public-sector or allied institutional customers, but many suppliers also sell through larger integrators. Engagements tend to involve formal qualification, security clearance, export-control review and evidence of delivery resilience, so even smaller specialists often need procurement discipline more typical of mid-market industrial firms.
The UK cohort is relatively compact: 1,007 defence companies are actively trading, with the population centred on firms whose defence activity is material rather than incidental. Reported employment across the cohort totals 5,920 people, pointing to a visible operating base but also to a sector where many suppliers remain specialist engineering, services or systems houses rather than very large employers. The count is therefore better read as a supply-chain map for defence-facing capability than as a broad tally of all firms with occasional public-sector contracts.
Procurement and assurance matter as much as product fit. Defence-facing suppliers usually work through formal tenders, framework routes or prime-contractor channels, with security vetting, controlled-information handling and audit trails built into delivery. Export-control compliance can narrow the buyer set where equipment, software or technical know-how may be transferred outside the UK, while classified work raises the cost of onboarding staff and subcontractors. Market structure is correspondingly gated: a supplier can have relevant technology but still face a slow route to contract award if accreditation, provenance and support arrangements are not already in place.
Procurement demand appears to favour suppliers that can evidence delivery history, security culture and integration capability, which tends to advantage established operators and subcontractors already embedded in programme chains. Earlier-stage specialists may still find openings where operational needs are tightly defined, but sales cycles remain long and certification burdens limit easy entry. Consolidation has been a plausible route for niche engineering and services providers, particularly where buyers prefer fewer hand-offs across secure delivery. The sector is therefore likely to keep a split shape: a small group of scaled contractors, surrounded by specialist firms that win work through certification, domain knowledge and trusted relationships.

Key facts
About 16% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (170 of 1,007 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
12% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (125 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Defence and national security suppliers typically sell into public-sector and allied-customer procurement processes rather than purely commercial buying cycles.
Activity spans equipment design, manufacturing, systems work and support services, so supplier comparisons usually need to separate product-led and service-led models.
Continuity of supply is a core screening issue because buyers are dealing with security-critical systems and services.

How UK defence companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Defence companies usually earn through programme contracts, subcontracted work packages, support agreements and specialist services rather than high-volume self-serve sales. Revenue can be tied to fixed-price delivery, milestone payments, time-and-materials work, costed engineering change requests, testing, through-life maintenance or licence fees for secure software and technical intellectual property. Hardware-led firms may bundle design, manufacture, integration and spares, while services firms sell cleared personnel, assurance, simulation, analysis or managed operational support. Gross margin depends heavily on whether the firm owns reusable technology or supplies labour and production capacity into a larger programme chain.
Who they sell to
Most defence suppliers sell to public-sector defence and security buyers, allied institutional customers, prime-contractor procurement teams and operational units with defined mission requirements. The buying group typically includes commercial officers, programme directors, engineering leads, security accreditors, finance teams and end users with operational authority. Direct awards are uncommon for new suppliers; formal tenders, framework places, partner-led routes and prime-contractor qualification tend to dominate. Sales cycles are often long because technical fit, provenance, clearance, export-control position, delivery history and support continuity all have to be accepted before price becomes the only question.
What they buy
Most defence firms tend to spend on systems that help them bid, deliver and evidence controlled work. Relevant categories include CRM for complex account mapping, bid and proposal tools, contract management, finance and project accounting, supply-chain risk management, quality management, export-control workflow, secure document handling, identity and access management, cyber monitoring, endpoint security and audit logging. Engineering and manufacturing suppliers may also buy product lifecycle management, test management, inventory control, specialist recruitment, certification support and outsourced IT operations. Services-led firms are more likely to need workforce planning, vetting administration, training, legal advice and margin reporting by work package.
Why and how to sell to them
Defence buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a framework win, new subcontract, accreditation push or headcount build exposes gaps in delivery control. Common pressures include bid costs, slow onboarding of cleared staff, inconsistent audit trails, supplier assurance, cyber requirements and the need to prove continuity for long-duration support obligations. Outbound messages usually work better when they reference procurement discipline, controlled information, programme risk and evidence packs rather than generic productivity. Credibility matters: case-study shapes, security posture, UK delivery capability and an ability to work around gated procurement processes are often more persuasive than claims about speed or novelty.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
