How UK Defence Systems companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually mixes engineering work packages, unit supply, systems integration and support rather than a single subscription model. Hardware and embedded software may be priced through fixed-price bids, time-and-materials tasks, framework call-offs or milestone-based delivery, with licences and maintenance wrapped around test equipment, mission systems or secure software components. Gross margins depend on whether the firm owns repeatable intellectual property or mainly provides engineering capacity. Once equipment enters service, spares, upgrades, obsolescence management and through-life support can make the commercial relationship more recurring than the initial bid suggests.
Who they sell to
Most customers are government end users, prime contractors, tiered industrial suppliers or security-sector operators with formal procurement routes. The buyer group typically includes engineering authorities, programme managers, commercial teams, secure procurement staff and technical assurance reviewers; finance often enters later to test risk allocation, payment milestones and liability. Other triggers include moving from prototype to qualification, taking on through-life support obligations, replacing spreadsheet-based evidence trails, or preparing for a prime-contractor audit. Outbound messages land better when they reduce programme risk: clearer traceability, fewer non-conformances, faster bid preparation, better cost control or cleaner handover between engineering and support. Sellers should expect early conversations to involve technical and commercial stakeholders, then procurement. Proof matters more than broad claims, so use sector-relevant case patterns, security-aware onboarding and paperwork that a bid team can reuse.

Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
