Defence MRO Companies in the UK: 200+ Active Firms (2026)
Defence MRO companies in the UK maintain, repair and overhaul military equipment, platforms and support systems for defence customers.
Buying centres tend to sit with defence programme teams, fleet operators, engineering authorities and commercial procurement groups, rather than with general facilities or IT buyers. Supplier selection is contract-led and evidence-heavy: buyers look for specialist engineering competence, inspection discipline, logistics capability and the ability to keep assets serviceable over long lifecycles. Engagements are usually project or framework based, with recurring technical support attached to platform availability, spares, field service and planned overhaul schedules. The buyer base is largely business-to-business defence services and public-sector-adjacent, with mid-market suppliers often acting as prime-contractor support rather than owning the whole customer relationship.
The UK cohort comprises 245 actively trading companies, so the specialist supplier base is narrower than the wider engineering-services market around it. Reported headcount totals 2,275, pointing to a sector built around lean technical teams as much as larger operational workforces. The market therefore looks contract-dense rather than firm-dense: a modest number of businesses carrying maintenance, inspection, logistics and through-life support work for defence customers.
Operating constraints are shaped less by consumer regulation than by defence contracting, technical assurance and access-controlled work. Maintenance providers need to demonstrate traceable inspection, engineering sign-off, secure handling of equipment information and the ability to work within customer-defined quality systems. Market structure also matters: many suppliers sit inside long through-life support chains, taking packages from platform owners or larger defence services contractors. That makes revenue visibility attractive but customer concentration awkward, particularly where a specialist workshop depends on a small number of programmes or platform families.
Demand appears likely to favour suppliers that can extend asset life, document engineering work clearly and absorb customer assurance requirements without turning every job into bespoke consultancy. The cohort appears weighted towards established mid-market providers rather than a broad wave of newly formed entrants. Consolidation may continue where specialist workshops need access to larger contract vehicles, but the market also leaves room for narrow technical providers whose credibility comes from inspection practice, logistics knowledge and familiarity with long-lived military equipment.

Key facts
About 17% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (44 of 245 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
6% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (17 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Defence MRO work centres on keeping military equipment, platforms and support systems usable through service life, rather than on new-build hardware.
UK defence customers use MRO suppliers for maintenance capacity, repair engineering and overhaul support across existing assets.
The segment gives buyers and suppliers a services-led view of defence activity, separate from prime-contract manufacturing.
Maintenance operators and specialist contractors can sit in the same procurement chain, which makes the market less uniform than a single activity label implies.

How UK defence MRO companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from long-term service contracts, framework call-offs and discrete work packages tied to inspection, repair, overhaul, modification, spares and field support. Pricing tends to mix fixed-price tasks, rate-card engineering labour, cost-reimbursable technical work and margin on parts or logistics handling. Some suppliers sell workshop capacity and certification discipline; others provide embedded support teams, deployable repair services or lifecycle planning around a platform family. Recurring income is usually linked to availability targets, scheduled maintenance windows and approved supplier status, rather than pure subscription revenue.
Who they sell to
Most customers are defence primes, specialist subcontractors, fleet operators and public-sector procurement teams buying through formal tender, framework or approved-supplier routes. The day-to-day sponsor is often an engineering authority, programme manager, supply-chain lead, commercial officer or maintenance commander, with safety and quality teams influencing approval. Sales cycles tend to be slow because buyers need evidence of technical competence, security practice, inspection traceability and prior work on comparable equipment. Smaller jobs may arrive through call-off orders, while larger support packages usually involve bid teams, contractual negotiation and customer audits before work starts.
What they buy
Most defence MRO firms tend to spend on systems and services that protect delivery assurance: quality management, maintenance planning, spares inventory, calibration tracking, document control, secure collaboration, cyber security, finance, HR and bid management. Workshop-heavy suppliers also buy test equipment, tooling, lifting gear, facilities maintenance, transport, packaging and specialist recruitment. Sellers with a service offer often find demand around compliance advisory, technical writing, training, export-control support, insurance and contract negotiation. The common thread is traceability: anything that makes engineering decisions, parts movements or customer approvals easier to evidence is closer to budget than generic back-office software.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears when defence MRO suppliers win a new work package, renew a framework, expand workshop capacity, hire senior quality or commercial staff, or take on a more demanding customer audit. Pain points are practical rather than abstract: turnaround time, parts shortages, ageing equipment, scarce engineers, documentation burden, cyber requirements and cash tied up in long delivery cycles. Outbound messages tend to land better when they speak to inspection traceability, bid readiness, fewer rework loops, faster quote-to-cash or less manual effort in customer reporting. Generic productivity claims usually need to be translated into contract delivery risk.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
