Defence Companies in London: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Defence companies in London supply security, intelligence and mission-support capabilities to government and regulated buyers across the capital.
Buying centres tend to sit with security, programme and engineering functions rather than departmental IT. London suppliers in this slice usually sell to national government, prime contractors, critical infrastructure operators and other security-sensitive enterprises, with work packaged as advisory retainers, mission-support teams, specialist engineering, systems assurance or delivery capacity. Engagements are typically procurement-led and evidence-heavy: buyers expect accreditations, staff vetting, delivery references and the ability to work around classified or safety-critical requirements. The commercial motion is therefore closer to consultative services and programme delivery than volume software sales, even where digital tooling sits inside the offer.
London has 153 active trading defence companies in this cohort. Reported employment reaches 1,720 people, which fits the operating model: specialist teams, cleared project staff and delivery managers rather than very large local payrolls. Commercial activity centres on national-government procurement, prime-contractor supply chains and resilience work for regulated buyers. Many suppliers look more like advisory, engineering or programme-delivery boutiques than product-led defence manufacturers, so contract access, evidence of prior delivery and security processes matter as much as staff scale.
Classified, safety-critical and resilience-focused work brings market structure close to public procurement rather than ordinary commercial outsourcing. Buyers tend to ask for audit trails, personnel vetting, information-handling controls and evidence that delivery teams can operate alongside prime contractors. Smaller suppliers therefore face a double gate: they must prove technical competence and also fit the contracting, assurance and security expectations of public-sector and regulated customers. For London firms, proximity to national-government buyers helps with relationship management, but it does not remove the procurement burden or the long lead times associated with sensitive work.
Growth appears likely to be uneven rather than broad-based. Suppliers with repeat public-sector delivery, scarce technical skills and credible security controls tend to be better placed than general consultancies trying to reposition around defence. Newer entrants may find openings in resilience, intelligence support and specialist engineering, but procurement cycles can stretch cash flow and slow hiring. Consolidation also remains plausible where boutique teams hold customer access or cleared capability that larger programme-delivery groups cannot build quickly. The market therefore looks selective: enough demand to sustain specialists, but little room for firms without a clear security-sensitive use case.

Key facts
About 15% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (24 of 153 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
16% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (25 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
London defence suppliers tend to sell into government and regulated procurement channels, where assurance requirements and contract frameworks shape sales cycles.
Security, intelligence and mission-support work sits closer to risk management than to discretionary business services.
Several operating models sit under the defence label, including specialist advisory teams, security-service providers and contract-backed mission-support businesses.
Staff numbers can understate commercial scale where delivery relies on subcontracting, retained expertise or high-value specialist work.

How London defence companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
London defence suppliers usually earn revenue from people-heavy delivery rather than pure product resale. Common models include advisory retainers, delivery teams billed by day rate, fixed-scope engineering work, systems assurance, managed support and bid-specific work packages under public-sector or prime-contractor frameworks. Some firms wrap proprietary tooling, data environments or simulation assets into the service, but the licence element often supports a wider engagement rather than standing alone. Pricing tends to follow the risk profile of the work: contained assessment projects can be scoped tightly, while mission support, integration and assurance work usually needs staged milestones, change control and evidence packs for procurement and audit.
Who they sell to
Buyers are typically national-government teams, prime contractors, regulated infrastructure operators and security-sensitive enterprises with obligations around resilience, intelligence, safety or continuity. The economic buyer may be a programme director, security director, head of engineering, CISO, commercial lead or procurement manager, with technical approval coming from assurance, architecture and operational stakeholders. Most routes to market are direct but procurement-shaped: frameworks, restricted tenders, security-cleared partner channels and prime-contractor supply chains matter more than self-serve demand. Sales cycles tend to be long, especially where vetting, site access, information-handling rules and references must be checked before a supplier can begin paid delivery.
What they buy
Most defence firms tend to spend on tools and services that reduce delivery risk or improve utilisation of scarce cleared staff. Relevant categories include bid management, project controls, secure collaboration, document handling, identity and access management, cyber monitoring, endpoint security, quality management, finance operations, CRM and contract administration. Delivery-led firms also buy specialist recruitment, vetting support, employment law, insurance, facilities, secure hosting, penetration testing, technical training and proposal-writing support. Sellers should expect extra scrutiny around information security, data residency, audit trails and subcontractor access, even for ordinary back-office tools, because a weak supplier process can become a delivery or procurement risk.
Why and how to sell to them
Defence buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a new framework place, contract win, accreditation renewal, leadership change or hiring push exposes operational strain. Common pressure points include bid cost, long onboarding cycles, clearance bottlenecks, fragmented project records, cyber-assurance evidence and margin leakage on change-controlled work. Outbound messages usually land better when they connect to a named delivery constraint rather than a generic efficiency claim: shortening bid preparation, proving control maturity, improving staff deployment, reducing audit friction or protecting sensitive client information. The tone should be precise and procurement-aware, with clear evidence of security practices and willingness to work through slower approval routes.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
