Generic Medicines Companies in the UK: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Generic medicines companies develop, license and supply bioequivalent off-patent treatments under UK MHRA oversight.
Procurement, regulatory affairs and quality teams tend to be the main buying centres, rather than brand marketing or early-stage discovery. Sales run through hospital, pharmacy, wholesale and public-sector healthcare channels, so qualification is often about licences, pharmacovigilance cover, batch release, continuity of supply and price discipline. Buyers are usually institutional or B2B purchasers managing formularies, tenders and distributed prescribing volumes. Engagements are correspondingly operational: supplier approvals, portfolio-level agreements, import and distribution arrangements, and recurring procurement cycles across multiple therapeutic areas. The closest-fit firms are mid-market and larger operators focused on off-patent, biosimilar or value-added medicines, not speculative patent-led research.

The UK cohort is small but specialised, with 133 actively trading companies in this list. Reported employment totals 2,025 people across 114 firms, with every firm in that reporting group giving a headcount. Scale is uneven: 38 companies report more than £5M in turnover, while 17 were incorporated since 2022. That mix points to a market where established licence holders and suppliers sit alongside newer entrants, but the operational burden of marketing authorisations, pharmacovigilance and distribution tends to favour firms with existing quality systems and wholesale relationships.
Human medicines sit within the MHRA regime, and generic suppliers cannot treat market entry as a simple trading registration. UK-wide marketing authorisations, pharmacovigilance responsibilities and quality-assurance controls shape who can manufacture, import, release and distribute products. Generic applications are tied to the Human Medicines Regulations, with the core test being sameness of active substance and pharmaceutical form, plus bioequivalence to a reference medicinal product. Market structure is also shaped by NHS procurement and by representation through Medicines UK, the trade body for off-patent generic, biosimilar and value-added medicines.
Future movement appears more likely to come from portfolio rationalisation, tender dynamics and compliance load than from speculative discovery cycles. Smaller suppliers tend to face the same authorisation, safety-monitoring and quality obligations as better resourced peers, which can make narrow portfolios exposed when prices tighten or supply issues arise. Scale-up scarcity is therefore plausible: firms that already manage regulated distribution, NHS-facing procurement and multiple therapeutic areas have an easier route to adding products. Consolidation may continue where licence ownership, import capability and wholesale access can be combined without weakening supply continuity.

Key facts
About 28% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (38 of 133 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
12% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (17 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
From 1 January 2025, the MHRA licenses human medicines across the whole UK through UK-wide marketing authorisations.
UK-wide generic applications under Regulation 51B of the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 must show the same active substance, the same pharmaceutical form and bioequivalence to the reference medicinal product.
Medicines UK says generic, biosimilar and value-added medicines deliver more than £20 billion in annual savings to healthcare budgets.
Medicines UK says its members manufacture and supply 85% of the prescription medicines used by the NHS.
OECD comparisons put generics at more than three-quarters of UK pharmaceutical volume in 2021, with later comparisons putting the UK above 50% of pharmaceutical-market value.

How UK generic medicines companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from supplying authorised off-patent medicines into healthcare channels, rather than from discovery milestones or brand-led promotion. Generic medicine firms may hold marketing authorisations, import finished products, contract out manufacturing, manage batch release, or distribute portfolios sourced from third-party manufacturers. Pricing tends to be pack-based, tender-led or agreed through wholesaler and pharmacy terms, with volume, service levels and substitution dynamics mattering more than promotional reach. Engagements are often recurring but operationally constrained: each product line carries quality documentation, pharmacovigilance duties, expiry management and supply-continuity expectations, so revenue growth depends on adding reliable products without increasing compliance risk faster than the operating model can absorb it.
Who they sell to
Most sales go to institutional and B2B buyers: hospital procurement teams, pharmacy groups, wholesalers and public-sector purchasing bodies. The commercial buyer is often procurement-led, but regulatory affairs, quality, responsible-person functions and finance tend to influence supplier approval before volume moves. Typical contracts range from repeat purchase arrangements to portfolio-level tenders, with sales cycles shaped by product qualification, price benchmarking, service history and supply assurance. Newer suppliers may enter through narrower product lines or import arrangements, while larger operators can compete across therapeutic portfolios. Procurement is usually direct, tender-based or framework-led, rather than self-serve or marketing-led.
What they buy
Most generic medicine firms tend to spend on systems and services that reduce friction around regulated supply. Relevant categories include regulatory information management, pharmacovigilance operations, quality management, batch documentation, artwork and labelling control, ERP, inventory planning, demand forecasting, warehouse management and audit management. Firms with manufacturing or release responsibilities may also buy laboratory systems, validation support, equipment maintenance and specialist quality consultancy. Commercial teams may need tender tracking, pricing analytics, CRM and contract-management tooling, but the sale usually has to make sense to compliance and operations as well as revenue leadership. Recruitment, legal, accounting and insurance services are also common where portfolios or authorisations are changing.
Why and how to sell to them
Generic medicine buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when operating pressure rises: a new authorisation, a tender win, a supply interruption, an audit finding, a portfolio acquisition, a change in import route or a shortage of regulatory and quality staff. Margin pressure makes generic suppliers wary of discretionary spend, so outbound messages usually work better when tied to avoided stock-outs, faster batch release, fewer manual deviations, cleaner audit trails or lower tender-administration burden. The strongest angle is often operational evidence rather than category language: show how similar regulated suppliers reduce rework, maintain continuity of supply and support MHRA-facing obligations without adding another heavy process layer.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
