Mobile Gaming Companies in the UK: 100+ Active Firms (2026)
Mobile gaming companies develop and publish smartphone and tablet games with in-app monetisation, in a UK market shaped by age ratings and distribution rules.
Commercial teams usually organise around portfolio management, user acquisition, live operations and platform compliance, rather than a single enterprise sales queue. The buyer is often the player, but the operating model is closer to a media business: audience acquisition, retention design, content scheduling, localisation, payments oversight and advertising yield sit beside creative production. Mid-market publishers tend to fit the profile most closely, especially those running repeatable title pipelines across original, licensed or live-operated games. Supplier spend is typically split between campaign-level marketing, analytics, moderation, customer support and compliance work, with platform distribution setting many of the practical constraints.

In the UK, 155 mobile-gaming companies are actively trading, making it a compact cohort by software standards. Only 12 report turnover above £5M, while 21 were incorporated since 2022, so the group combines a small set of revenue-scale publishers with newer studios still proving repeatable distribution. Reported employment totals around 1,600 people, which points to a labour footprint concentrated in development, operations and commercial functions rather than manufacturing or physical retail.
UK mobile-game publishers are not generally licensed as a standalone sector, but distribution and monetisation bring several regimes into view. GOV.UK describes video-game classification through the UK age-rating system, with some age categories carrying legal backing for physical sales. Loot boxes are treated as randomised in-game items where paid access, virtual currency or gameplay rewards can blur consumer-protection boundaries. HMRC relief also depends on British certification and a cultural test, while the CMA has scrutinised mobile ecosystems, app distribution, in-app purchase rules and cloud gaming. That mixture puts compliance work close to product design, rather than leaving it solely with legal teams.
Portfolio depth appears to matter more than isolated hit titles. Studios with live operations, analytics discipline and age-appropriate design processes tend to have more options as platform rules, advertising efficiency and consumer-protection expectations shift. Smaller studios may find publishing partnerships or acquisition routes attractive, particularly where user-acquisition costs make direct scaling difficult. Consolidation pressure is therefore likely to sit around distribution access, compliance capability and repeatable content operations, rather than around technology claims alone. The UK cohort still looks specialised, with scale-up scarcity alongside a steady feed of early-commercial studios.

Key facts
About 7% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (12 of 155 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
13% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (21 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Ukie valued the UK video-games market at £8.76 billion in 2025, up 7.4%, with mobile-games spend growing 7.9% to £2.07 billion.
PEGI 12, 16 and 18 ratings have legal backing in the UK, and selling an age-rated physical game to an under-age child can be a criminal offence.
Loot boxes are treated as randomised in-game items that may be bought with real money, virtual currency or gameplay rewards, placing them within the wider microtransaction debate.
HMRC’s older video-games tax relief closes to new productions after 31 March 2025 and fully from 1 April 2027, with Video Games Expenditure Credit potentially available instead.
The CMA has examined mobile ecosystems, including app distribution, in-app purchase rules and cloud gaming, which matters for studios dependent on platform access.

How UK mobile gaming companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue is usually a blend of consumer payments and media-style yield: in-game purchases, virtual currency, season passes, subscriptions, rewarded advertising and, for some titles, paid downloads. The product is software, but the commercial unit is an operated audience, with releases, events, balance changes and content drops used to keep play sessions and spending active. Pricing is often low-friction at player level, while portfolio value comes from repeat usage across many small transactions. Publishing income can also include licensing, distribution support or co-development fees where a studio brings content, production capacity or regional expertise to a larger publisher.
Who they sell to
Most sell to consumers through mobile distribution channels, so procurement looks unlike enterprise software: the first sale is usually self-serve, mediated by distribution platforms and driven by acquisition marketing rather than a negotiated contract. Commercially material deals sit around the consumer funnel, including publishing agreements, licensed content, advertising partnerships and distribution support. Decision-makers are typically heads of publishing, user acquisition, product, monetisation, analytics and finance, with legal or compliance involved where age ratings, loot-box mechanics or in-app purchase design are material. Sales cycles for B2B partnerships tend to lengthen when a new title, territory or content licence is involved.
What they buy
Most mobile-gaming firms tend to spend on the systems that make portfolios measurable and operable: attribution, campaign analytics, creative testing, product analytics, data warehousing, crash reporting, observability and customer messaging. Live-operated teams also buy community management, moderation, player support, localisation, QA testing and content-production services. Monetisation adds demand for ad-yield management, payments, fraud controls, subscription management and finance tooling. As teams mature, spend often moves into security, privacy operations, age-assurance, contract management, tax-credit advisory, recruitment and workforce planning, especially where a studio is moving from single-title development into a repeatable publishing model.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears before a launch, after a soft-launch readout, or when a live title starts carrying more revenue risk than the original production team can manage manually. Other triggers include a new publishing hire, expansion into new territories, a move from work-for-hire into owned titles, or a compliance review prompted by age ratings, in-game purchases or randomised rewards. Outbound tends to work when it ties to a measurable operating constraint: reducing wasted acquisition spend, shortening QA cycles, improving support response, evidencing consumer-protection controls, or giving finance a clearer view of title-level margin.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
