Music Companies in the UK: 9,076 Active Firms (2026)
Music companies in the UK record, publish, manage and monetise music rights, performances and audio assets across the national market.
Buying centres tend to split between rights ownership, catalogue administration, production services and business-to-business licensing, with a separate band of artist-service operators selling into managers, labels and creators. Customers range from independent rights holders and media buyers to mid-market agencies, venues and corporate users needing licensed audio or production support. Engagements are usually contract-led: catalogue management, royalty administration, sync licensing, distribution support or recorded-audio production rather than open-ended consultancy. The sharper commercial fits are firms with repeatable UK revenue from rights exploitation, licensing workflows or specialist production capacity, not consumer electronics or events-only entertainment.
9,076 music companies are actively trading in the UK, making the cohort sizeable but mostly small-scale when judged against reported turnover. Only 46 firms sit above £5M in turnover, while 2,180 were incorporated since 2022, pointing to a long tail of young operators alongside older catalogue and service businesses. Reported headcount totals 1,303, and all 119 of 119 firms with employment returns report some staff, so the workforce footprint is concentrated in a relatively narrow subset rather than spread evenly across the active base.
UK music rights and recording activity sits across copyright, contract and consumer-law obligations rather than a dedicated sector regulator. Chain-of-title evidence matters for recorded assets, publishing interests, neighbouring rights and synchronisation licences, especially where catalogues are bought, administered or licensed into advertising, film, games or corporate media. Royalty accounting, performer consents and territorial permissions tend to be the practical diligence points. Firms handling artist, customer or fan information also need GDPR-compliant processes, while retail-facing subscription or download models bring consumer-contract and cancellation obligations into play.
Catalogue monetisation appears likely to remain the organising theme, especially where rights owners can combine recordings, publishing and business-to-business licensing. Many firms look more like lean asset-holding or service businesses than employment-heavy media groups, so scale may continue to concentrate around operators with repeat licensing channels and reliable royalty administration. Smaller studios, production houses and artist-service firms tend to face pressure from platform economics and higher client-acquisition costs. Consolidation may follow rights catalogues and administration capability rather than headcount alone, with buyers favouring clean ownership records, recurring licence income and auditable royalty flows.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (46 of 9,076 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
24% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (2,180 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Music companies span recording, publishing, management and rights monetisation rather than a single operating model.
Rights ownership and performance management sit behind much of the commercial music chain.
Recorded-audio income makes the sector relevant beyond live performance and artist services.
The market includes both service-led operators and rights-holding or asset-management businesses.

How UK Music companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Music companies usually monetise a mixture of rights, services and access. Catalogue owners earn from master recordings, publishing shares, neighbouring rights and synchronisation permissions, often through royalty flows and negotiated licence fees. Production and recording businesses sell booked studio time, engineering, mixing, mastering and live-to-recorded audio work on project fees or retainers. Artist-service and administration firms tend to charge commission, administration fees, revenue share or subscription-style access to workflow support. The commercial model is rarely a single clean subscription; it more often combines recurring rights income with transaction-led licensing and service work tied to releases, campaigns or catalogue activity.
Who they sell to
Most music firms sell to buyers with a specific rights, content or campaign need rather than a generic software budget. Typical customers include artist managers, independent labels, publishers, agencies, broadcasters, games and film producers, venues, corporate marketing teams and other rights holders. Decisions often involve creative leads, legal teams and finance contacts, with procurement becoming more formal for larger media, brand or public-sector customers. Small production bookings can close through direct relationships, while catalogue administration, distribution and business-to-business licensing usually require contract review, ownership checks and usage restrictions. RFPs appear mainly where corporate or agency buyers need licensed audio at scale.
What they buy
Music firms tend to spend on tools and services that reduce leakage between rights ownership, usage and payment. Common categories include royalty accounting, rights metadata management, contract management, finance systems, CRM, marketing automation, analytics, cloud storage, cyber security and collaboration tools for distributed creative teams. Firms with direct-to-creator or direct-to-fan activity may also buy subscription billing, customer support and data-protection advice. Service spend often covers copyright legal work, catalogue valuation, tax, audit, recruitment, performance marketing and specialist insurance. Production-led firms add studio infrastructure, audio engineering support, facilities management and equipment finance, although many keep fixed costs low by using freelance capacity.
Why and how to sell to them
A catalogue purchase, new distribution arrangement, royalty backlog, finance hire or move into corporate licensing can all create intent. Music buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when spreadsheet-led administration starts to miss usage, when royalty statements take too long to reconcile, or when legal teams need cleaner evidence of rights ownership. Outbound angles work better when they map to cash recovery, auditability, clearance speed or reduced manual effort, rather than broad claims about creative growth. For smaller operators, the sharper pitch is usually lower administration per release or licence; for scaled rights and service businesses, it is control over contracts, payments and reporting across multiple counterparties.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
