Semiconductor Companies in the UK: 600+ Active Firms (2026)
Semiconductor companies design, develop and supply chips, microelectronics and related intellectual property in the UK.
Buying centres usually sit with engineering, product and operations teams rather than general procurement, because purchases turn on qualification, reliability and supply assurance. The main demand pools are industrial controls, communications equipment, computing infrastructure, automotive electronics, defence-adjacent systems and advanced manufacturing. Engagements tend to be long-cycle technical sales: design services, licensed intellectual property, specialist components and production-support work can all sit inside the same supplier conversation. Buyers are mostly commercial organisations with engineering depth, not consumer channels, and contracts often depend on evidence of process control and continuity of supply.
The UK cohort contains 686 actively trading semiconductor and microelectronics firms, with reported employment of 2,724 people. Annual turnover is above £5M at 49 firms, leaving most of the market below that threshold and often closer to specialist engineering-services scale than volume chip production. Another 90 firms were incorporated since 2022, so the cohort still has a visible early-commercial layer alongside older design, component and supply-chain businesses.
There is no sole conduct regulator for semiconductors, but UK government treats the activity as strategically sensitive. Public policy focuses support on research, design and compound semiconductors, while acquisitions can fall within the National Security and Investment Act regime. GOV.UK guidance treats relevant semiconductor research, development, production, intellectual property, know-how and related services as activities that may require notification. Export-control rules can also apply where goods, software, technology or technical assistance fall within controlled categories.
Commercial momentum appears to favour firms that sit close to customer engineering teams, prove reliability through qualification work and protect know-how without becoming dependent on a narrow manufacturing route. Scale-up scarcity is likely to remain a constraint, particularly where capital equipment, process validation and specialist hiring are needed before revenue becomes repeatable. Consolidation may come through licensing, design-services tie-ups and component supply relationships rather than broad platform plays. The sector tends to reward patient technical sales more than horizontal go-to-market expansion.

Key facts
About 7% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (49 of 686 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
13% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (90 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Certain acquisitions can require mandatory notification under the National Security and Investment Act; GOV.UK guidance lists semiconductors within 17 sensitive areas.
Relevant activity may also intersect with the Strategic Export Control List and export-control rules.
A 2024 GOV.UK sector study identified 623 in-scope UK semiconductor companies, including 210 dedicated semiconductor companies.
Dedicated UK semiconductor companies generated £9.6 billion in revenues in 2022, about 2% of global semiconductor revenues.

How UK semiconductor companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a mixture of engineering work, intellectual-property licensing, specialist component sales and production-support activity. Many UK semiconductor firms are closer to applied engineering businesses than volume manufacturers: they may charge non-recurring design fees, milestone payments for validation, licence fees for reusable designs, per-unit margins on components, or retainers for technical support. Pricing tends to follow the risk being absorbed. Prototype work is often project-priced, while qualified parts and embedded designs can lead to multi-year supply or royalty arrangements. The commercial logic is less about high-velocity sales volume and more about becoming specified into a customer's product roadmap.
Who they sell to
Customers are usually engineering-led organisations: industrial equipment makers, communications hardware teams, computing infrastructure buyers, automotive electronics groups, defence-adjacent suppliers and advanced manufacturing businesses. The first serious conversations often sit with CTOs, engineering directors, heads of hardware, product leads and quality teams, before procurement and finance join to test continuity of supply, liability and payment terms. Most deals are direct and technical, with partner channels more common where distributors, fabrication partners or specialist consultancies are involved. Sales cycles tend to run from months to years because qualification, testing, redesign risk and supply assurance matter as much as headline price.
What they buy
Most semiconductor firms tend to spend on tools and services that protect engineering time, improve traceability and support customer qualification. Relevant categories include electronic design automation, simulation, product lifecycle management, lab information systems, test and measurement equipment, quality management, supply-chain planning, specialist recruitment, technical marketing and CRM. Firms with production or prototyping activity may also buy cleanroom services, facilities support, metrology, inventory control and manufacturing execution software. Legal, accounting and advisory work often centres on intellectual property, export controls, grant funding, R&D tax claims, customer contracts and acquisition diligence rather than general corporate housekeeping alone.
Why and how to sell to them
Semiconductor buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a design win moves from prototype into production, when customer audits expose gaps in documentation, when hiring plans strain engineering capacity, or when new overseas customers bring export-control and supply-chain questions. Funding events, grant awards, senior commercial hires and laboratory expansion can also signal intent. Outbound messaging is more credible when it links to qualification, reliability, traceability, engineering throughput or supply continuity, rather than generic productivity claims. These companies are often cautious buyers: a useful pitch shows how the offer reduces technical risk, protects know-how, or helps them pass scrutiny from demanding industrial customers.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
