Social Enterprise Companies in the UK: 1,100+ Active Firms (2026)
Social enterprises in the UK trade goods or services to deliver measurable social, community or environmental outcomes.
Buying centres tend to sit with commissioners, procurement teams, estates and operations directors, school and college leaders, community-service managers, and sustainability or inclusion leads. The customer base is mixed: public bodies and charities buy contracted service delivery, housing and health-adjacent organisations commission local provision, while consumer-facing models use retail, membership or platform revenue. Engagements tend to be contract-sized rather than grant-only, with buyers expecting delivery capacity, impact reporting and governance controls before long-running relationships are renewed. Commercial maturity varies, but the better-fit organisations behave like operating businesses first, with mission protection built into surplus use and decision-making.
Around 1,173 social enterprises are actively trading in the UK. Reported employment totals 2,676 people across the cohort, which gives the sector a visible labour footprint despite many organisations remaining service-led and locally anchored. Scale is uneven: 17 have turnover above £5M, while 86 were incorporated since 2022, leaving a long tail of smaller and newer operators around a comparatively small set of larger contract-backed providers. That mix suits buyer research where the distinction between grant-dependent charities and revenue-earning operators matters.
Governance is the main market-structure issue. Many operators sit between commercial contracts, grant-funded programmes and public-service delivery, so purchasers tend to scrutinise how surpluses are used, how assets are protected and whether the mission can survive changes in management or ownership. Legal form matters because it affects dividend policy, asset locks, trustee or director duties and eligibility for some funders. Activity can also bring sector-specific oversight where services touch care, housing, education, environmental claims or financial inclusion, even when the enterprise itself is not regulated as a financial or care provider.
Further development appears likely to be shaped less by novelty and more by procurement discipline. Buyers tend to want proof that social outcomes are measured, repeatable and tied to commercial delivery, while funders tend to prefer governance that limits mission drift. The cohort also appears split between local service operators and a thinner layer of larger contract managers, which may encourage partnerships rather than outright consolidation. Margin pressure is likely to remain a constraint, especially where delivery relies on staff-intensive community, education or health-adjacent work.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (17 of 1,173 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
7% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (86 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Social enterprises trade goods or services while seeking social, community or environmental outcomes.
Public-purpose procurement and partnership work often require outcome evidence alongside standard supplier assessment.
Asset-light trading models sit alongside larger operating organisations, so social-purpose positioning is not a reliable proxy for operating model.
Impact finance screening tends to connect trading activity with stated mission, rather than treating commercial performance and outcomes as separate categories.

How UK social enterprise companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually combines earned income with mission-linked delivery. Social enterprises may run contracted community services, training and education programmes, supported employment, environmental operations, retail, membership schemes or software-enabled marketplaces, but the sale is normally a paid outcome rather than a donation. Pricing tends to follow service contracts, day rates, per-user or per-member fees, product margins, or retainer-style delivery fees. Grant funding can sit alongside trading income, especially during programme launch or expansion, yet the more commercially mature organisations need recurring customers, renewal evidence and cost control. Margins are often constrained by staff-intensive delivery, estates costs and the requirement to evidence social value.
Who they sell to
Buyers are rarely a single persona. Public bodies, charities, housing and health-adjacent organisations typically buy through procurement or commissioning routes, while schools, colleges and community organisations may use relationship-led purchasing with formal approval from finance or operations. Senior decision-makers often include commissioners, heads of service, procurement leads, estates directors, school leaders and sustainability or inclusion leads. Contract values can range from modest local retainers to larger delivery awards; sales cycles tend to lengthen when safeguarding, mobilisation, outcomes measurement or governance checks are involved. Consumer-facing operators have a different motion, using retail, membership, referrals or self-serve journeys.
What they buy
Most social enterprises tend to spend on systems that reduce delivery admin and make outcomes easier to evidence. Common buying areas include finance and payroll software, CRM, case-management tools, volunteer and workforce scheduling, HR, safeguarding workflows, contract management, impact reporting, survey tooling, payment processing, cyber security, cloud hosting and basic analytics. Service-led operators also buy accounting, legal advice, bid writing, marketing, recruitment, training and facilities support. Larger contract-backed providers may need procurement compliance, mobilisation planning and quality-assurance help, while retail or membership models are more likely to care about payments, stock control, customer support and retention.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial triggers tend to be visible around a new public-service contract, a programme moving from grant support into earned income, a senior operations or finance hire, headcount growth, premises expansion, or pressure to report impact in a format buyers will accept. Pitches usually land better when they connect cost control to mission protection: fewer manual processes, clearer renewal evidence, safer delivery, lower audit burden, or a shorter route from referral to service. Generic messaging about doing more good is usually weak. Procurement-conscious buyers need proof of governance fit, implementation effort, pricing discipline and how the offer helps them win or retain contracts.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
