Not-For-Profit Companies in the UK: 22,423 Active Firms (2026)
Not-for-profit companies in the UK deliver charitable, social, educational and community services through grant, donation and contract-funded models.
Demand is shaped less by a single buyer type than by funders, commissioners, trustees and service users pulling in different directions. Larger organisations tend to sell capability to public-sector buyers or institutional funders, while smaller operators rely more on donations, memberships, grant awards and local service charges. Engagements range from local programme delivery and community support contracts to national service mandates with formal reporting, audited accounts and outcome measurement. Governance, safeguarding, bid management and finance teams are often as central to purchasing decisions as front-line service leads, because delivery credibility depends on evidence, controls and repeatable reporting rather than pure commercial expansion.
The UK cohort contains 22,423 actively trading not-for-profit companies, spanning local community providers, education and cultural bodies, faith-linked organisations, environmental operators and mission-led service providers. Reported employment totals 6,107 people, which gives only a partial view of operating scale because many organisations combine paid staff with trustees, volunteers, contractors and partner delivery networks. The list also includes a long tail of newer entities alongside a much smaller group with sizeable turnover, so revenue distribution is likely to be uneven rather than clustered around a typical mid-market profile.
Operating discipline is shaped by charitable governance, grant compliance, restricted funding, procurement rules and public-benefit expectations. Organisations that deliver commissioned services must often evidence safeguarding, complaints handling, financial controls and outcome reporting before they win repeat work. Trading subsidiaries add another layer where commercial income is used to fund mission-led activity, especially in culture, education and community services. The market structure therefore favours organisations that can translate social outcomes into auditable reporting without losing the trust-based relationships on which donations, memberships and local partnerships depend.
Funding pressure appears likely to keep the sector cautious, with reserves, grant renewal risk and contract pricing shaping hiring and programme decisions. Newer organisations tend to enter around specific community needs or place-based services, while scale remains harder where income is episodic or tied to restricted grants. Consolidation may occur through partnerships, shared back-office functions and service transfers rather than conventional acquisitions. Larger operators with repeat contracts and mature governance should remain better placed, but many smaller organisations will continue to prioritise survivability, volunteer capacity and evidence of impact over expansion for its own sake.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (134 of 22,423 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
23% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (5,380 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Not-for-profit company buyers commonly sit across charitable, social, educational and community-service categories, so suppliers often need to map the underlying funding model before segmenting accounts.
Grant- and donation-funded organisations tend to have different buying cycles from contract-funded service providers, even where the operating activity appears similar.
Public-service delivery, civil society activity and outsourced provision overlap in this market, which can make procurement responsibilities less uniform than in commercial SME segments.
Contract-funded service providers are more likely to mirror public-sector procurement rhythms than donation-led organisations, particularly where delivery depends on tenders or framework access.

How UK Not-For-Profit companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Not-for-profit companies usually monetise a mission rather than a product line, so income is often layered. A single organisation may combine donations, grant funding, membership subscriptions, commissioned services, event income and a trading arm that cross-subsidises charitable work. Pricing tends to follow the funder rather than the end user: fixed-fee delivery contracts, cost-recovery grant budgets, restricted project awards, annual membership rates or low-margin service charges. Larger engagements usually come with milestone payments, outcome reporting and audit trails, while smaller community services can run on shorter funding cycles and volunteer support. The commercial constraint is not only winning income, but proving that money is being used for the stated purpose.
Who they sell to
Most not-for-profit sellers face a mixed buyer map. Public-sector commissioners, grant-making bodies, schools, community partners, corporate social responsibility teams and individual supporters may all fund the same organisation in different ways. Decision-making commonly involves chief executives, finance directors, programme leads, trustees and bid teams, with safeguarding or governance officers drawn in where services reach vulnerable groups. Larger contracts usually move through formal tenders, framework agreements or grant competitions, while membership and donation income is more often direct and relationship-led. Sales cycles vary by funding route: a local partnership can move quickly, but a commissioned service or institutional grant may take months and require evidence of delivery history.
What they buy
Most not-for-profit firms tend to spend on systems that reduce administrative load, evidence outcomes and protect trust. Common categories include donor management, grant tracking, finance, payroll, HR, safeguarding case management, volunteer scheduling, learning management, CRM, website, email, analytics and document control. Larger organisations may also buy bid-writing support, audit, legal advice, cyber security, cloud hosting, data integration and managed IT. Recruitment services are often relevant for finance, fundraising, service delivery and governance roles, though budgets can be cautious. Suppliers that understand restricted funds, reporting periods, trustee scrutiny and low tolerance for operational disruption usually have an easier conversation than those selling generic efficiency claims.
Why and how to sell to them
Not-for-profit buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when funding terms change, a grant is renewed, a new service contract starts, trustees request better controls or reporting becomes too manual. Other useful triggers include senior finance hires, fundraising team expansion, safeguarding reviews, merger discussions, new regional delivery, or the launch of a trading subsidiary. Outbound works better when it maps to funder compliance, reduced back-office effort, evidence of impact or lower delivery risk, rather than growth language borrowed from private-sector sales. Many buyers will ask how a purchase fits restricted budgets and whether implementation can be staged around programme deadlines, board meetings and year-end reporting.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
