Not-for-profit Companies in London: 6,500+ Active Firms (2026)
Not-for-profit organisations in London deliver charitable, social, cultural and community services across the capital.
Funding and commissioning relationships define the buying centres here: public-body commissioners, grant-makers, donors, members and service users all sit in the revenue mix. Many organisations sell or deliver to institutional customers while serving beneficiaries rather than conventional end-buyers; others look more like membership, culture or education bodies with recurring subscriptions, ticketed activity, service fees or fundraising. Engagements range from local project grants and community partnerships to repeat service contracts, with operating models spanning trustee-led teams and staff-heavy delivery organisations. That mix makes income quality, governance capacity and contract dependency more useful screening lenses than conventional sales-led or consumer-market segmentation.
London has 6,504 trading not-for-profit organisations, a sizeable cohort but one that is likely to be uneven by income, staffing and funding model. The scale band includes 39 organisations above £5M in reported income, while 1,726 were incorporated since 2022, pointing to a long tail of newer or smaller entities alongside more established operators. Reported employment stands at 1,555 staff, with all 125 reporting organisations showing at least some employment.
Market structure is shaped by funding channel and charitable purpose as much as by legal form. Grant-funded and donation-funded bodies face restrictions on how income can be spent, while contract-funded operators need evidence of delivery, safeguarding controls and reporting suited to public-body commissioning. Membership and cultural organisations tend to have a different rhythm, with subscriptions, events and fundraising sitting closer to beneficiary and supporter relationships. The practical diligence questions are therefore about governance, restricted reserves, service continuity and exposure to a narrow funder base, rather than margin profile alone.
Pressure on funding appears likely to keep the cohort bifurcated. Larger operators tend to professionalise finance, compliance and impact reporting, while smaller trustee-led entities rely on grants, fundraising and volunteer capacity. Consolidation may occur where service contracts require continuity or where back-office costs become hard to absorb, but many local bodies will remain independent because beneficiary trust and place-based relationships matter. The scarcity of scaled operators suggests that growth will depend less on volume creation and more on access to repeat funding, contract renewal and governance maturity.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (39 of 6,504 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
26% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (1,726 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
London’s not-for-profit companies cover charitable, social, cultural and community services rather than one standard operating model.
Charity-tagged entities sit alongside broader not-for-profit companies, so legal form and service role need to be checked together.
The segment is relevant to researchers mapping civic provision, non-commercial service delivery and institutional demand across London.
Service role, governance model and operating structure can vary widely across organisations in this market.

How London Not-for-profit companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
London not-for-profits usually earn income through a blend of restricted grants, donations, service contracts, membership subscriptions, ticketed activity and fees for delivery. Their sale is often a funded intervention rather than a conventional product sale: training places, advice sessions, cultural access, care provision, community programmes or grant administration. Pricing can therefore look like an annual membership, a project budget, a per-user or per-beneficiary fee, a retainer for service delivery, or a reimbursement model tied to outputs. Margins are often constrained by funder rules, so revenue quality depends on renewal likelihood, unrestricted income and the cost of reporting back to funders.
Who they sell to
Most sell into funders and commissioners as much as to end users. The buyer may be a public-body commissioner, grant manager, foundation team, corporate partnerships lead, member organisation, school, venue partner or individual donor, while beneficiaries may have little or no purchasing role. Decisions typically involve chief executives, trustees, finance directors, heads of service, fundraising leads and procurement teams. Small grants and memberships can move through direct relationships or self-serve channels; larger service contracts tend to involve formal procurement, tenders, grant panels and board approval. Sales cycles are therefore uneven, with timing shaped by funding rounds, renewals and budget windows.
What they buy
Spending tends to follow the pressure points of funding, governance and delivery. Most not-for-profit firms tend to spend on finance and accounting tools, donor and supporter CRM, grant management, case management, volunteer coordination, HR and payroll, safeguarding workflows, website and fundraising systems, payment processing, ticketing, impact reporting and document management. Larger delivery organisations also buy audit, legal advice, bid writing, evaluation support, cyber security, managed IT, cloud hosting, recruitment and training. Cost control matters, but so does evidence: vendors that help teams produce funder reports, trustee packs and service outcomes usually fit the buying logic better than generic productivity claims.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when a new grant is awarded, a service contract is renewed or retendered, a trustee board asks for better oversight, a finance lead joins, or delivery teams outgrow spreadsheets and shared inboxes. Other triggers include safeguarding reviews, audit issues, donor-base expansion, venue reopening, merger discussions and the launch of a new programme. Outreach tends to land when it links a specific administrative burden to funder assurance, income retention or service capacity. Procurement is rarely impulsive: sellers should expect budget scrutiny, trustee sign-off and a need to show low implementation risk for staff, volunteers and beneficiaries.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
