Further Education Companies in London: 400+ Active Firms (2026)
Further education providers deliver post-16 vocational, technical and skills training for learners and employers across London.
Buying decisions tend to sit with college executives, adult-skills commissioners, employer-engagement teams and local public-sector partners rather than with a single software-style buyer. Provision is usually sold to learners, London employers and funded programmes, with procurement shaped by learner volumes, inspection history, contract compliance and the ability to evidence employment outcomes. Engagements range from short accredited courses and apprenticeship delivery to larger borough or employer programmes, so the relevant buying centre is often part education, part workforce planning and part public funding administration.
London has 435 active trading further education providers, giving the page a city-specific view of independent training organisations, specialist provision and company-structured college-linked activity. Reported headcount totals 1,131, which points to a workforce footprint that is visible but not coterminous with the public college estate. The active company population is therefore better read as an employer-facing and learner-delivery layer within London’s skills market, rather than a full measure of publicly controlled education bodies.
Policy context differs by UK nation, with further education treated through separate systems across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In England, skills funding now sits inside the Department for Education after the funding agency was folded back into the department. Ofsted’s education inspection framework covers further education colleges, sixth-form colleges, independent specialist colleges, independent learning providers and other skills provision, with judgements running from outstanding to inadequate. The ONS has also placed English further education corporations, sixth-form college corporations and designated institutions in the central government sector, reflecting public-sector control and intervention powers.
Commercial development appears likely to favour providers that can evidence inspection quality, learner progression and employer demand without relying solely on volume-led recruitment. Scaled private operators are scarce, while many providers remain tied to local contracts, specialist learner groups or apprenticeship niches. Funding integration inside central government may make compliance and reporting more exacting, particularly for organisations that sit between public delivery and commercial employer training. Consolidation tends to look practical rather than speculative: shared back-office functions, subcontracting relationships and selective acquisitions where a provider has a defensible route into London employers.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (8 of 435 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
23% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (103 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Further education is a devolved policy area, so UK-wide comparisons combine separate systems in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The Education and Skills Funding Agency became part of DfE in April 2025, shifting England’s public funding administration inside the department.
Ofsted inspects further education colleges, sixth-form colleges, independent specialist colleges and independent learning providers using a four-point grading scale from outstanding to inadequate.
England has 213 colleges preparing over 1.6 million students, with 88% judged good or outstanding for overall effectiveness.
Higher technical education accounted for 16% of higher education entrants in England in 2021/22, indicating a smaller technical route than in some OECD vocational-tertiary systems.

How London further education companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a mix of public funding, learner-paid course fees, apprenticeship delivery, employer-funded training and subcontracted provision. The commercial unit is rarely a simple software-style licence: income is tied to enrolled learners, course starts, completed qualifications, attendance evidence and, for employer work, cohort-based delivery or contracted training packages. Providers are selling teaching capacity, assessment, learner support and compliance administration as much as curriculum. Short accredited courses may behave like transactional purchases, while apprenticeship and adult-skills programmes require longer delivery, more reporting and closer alignment with funding rules, inspection expectations and employer demand.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually split across learners, London employers and public-sector commissioning routes. On the employer side, conversations tend to involve HR, learning and development, operations, workforce planning and apprenticeship levy roles, with finance and procurement joining when delivery moves beyond ad hoc training. Publicly funded work is more formal, with adult-skills commissioners, borough partners and college executives looking for evidence of delivery capacity, learner outcomes and compliance discipline. Small course purchases can be direct and fairly quick; larger employer or funded programmes tend to follow termly or annual planning cycles, framework-style procurement, partnership bids or negotiated subcontracting arrangements.
What they buy
Spending tends to cluster around learner management, timetabling, assessment, safeguarding, attendance tracking, funding compliance, finance and HR systems. Providers also buy marketing support for learner recruitment, employer-engagement tooling, careers and progression tracking, cyber security, cloud hosting, payroll, audit support and specialist legal or accounting advice around funding contracts. Teaching delivery creates recurring demand for curriculum content, learning platforms, accessibility services, classroom technology and recruitment support for tutors and assessors. Larger London providers may also need estates, facilities and health-and-safety services, while smaller independent training organisations often prioritise systems that reduce manual reporting and make inspection evidence easier to assemble.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when providers win a new funded contract, expand employer-led delivery, prepare for Ofsted activity, take on subcontracting obligations or appoint new senior leadership. Pain points are usually administrative rather than abstract: evidencing learner progress, keeping funding claims clean, retaining learners, matching courses to employer vacancies and producing audit trails without overloading teaching teams. Outbound messages tend to work better when they refer to a concrete operating pressure, such as reducing compliance rework, improving progression evidence or shortening employer reporting cycles. Generic education messaging is less useful than proof that a supplier understands inspection, funding and workforce-delivery constraints.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
