Sport and Leisure Companies in Leeds: 1,500+ Active Firms (2026)
Sport and leisure companies in Leeds operate venues, clubs, coaching, events and activity services across the city-region.
Buying centres tend to split between consumer participation and memberships, venue and facility management, coaching or activity delivery, and event services. Sales motions are mixed: direct-to-consumer booking for fitness and recreation, retained service contracts with schools, employers and local authorities, and seasonal arrangements with clubs or event organisers. Better-fit operators are not hobby clubs alone; they show commercial scale, lean to medium-sized teams, and engagements that range from low-value participation fees to higher-value venue, membership or service contracts. Due diligence tends to centre on safety duties, safeguarding practice, insurance and the ability to manage staff, volunteers and participants across shared facilities.
Leeds has 1,563 sport and leisure companies actively trading, spanning participation services, facility operators, coaching businesses and events-led models across the city-region. Reported headcount totals 1,913 people, a reminder that much of the local base appears to be owner-managed, part-time, contractor-supported or asset-light rather than large-employer infrastructure. Scale is uneven: a small upper band reaches higher turnover, while the long tail is shaped by neighbourhood venues, specialist coaching, recreation services and membership models. For researchers, that makes turnover rank a cleaner comparison point than visibility or local profile when assessing the largest operators.
Obligations vary by activity, venue and participant group rather than by a single sector licence. HSE guidance places health and safety duties on employers and the self-employed in leisure activities, with a test of what is reasonably practicable for staff, volunteers, club members, visiting teams and spectators. Safeguarding sits alongside that safety regime: Sport England treats protection of children and adults from harm as a core condition for a safe space in sport and physical activity. DCMS, the Home Country Sports Councils and Sport England shape policy, funding and measurement, while national governing bodies set sport-specific rules and operating standards.
Commercial development appears likely to depend less on headline participation growth and more on execution in regulated, trust-sensitive settings. Operators that can document safeguarding, staff training, incident management and facility standards tend to be better placed for schools, local-authority work, employer programmes and repeat events. Smaller clubs and coaching providers may remain viable but administratively stretched, especially where volunteer management and venue access are central to delivery. Some consolidation may come through shared back-office services, portfolio facility management or event partnerships rather than formal mergers. The sector's scarcity of scaled operators means revenue-ranked comparisons are likely to remain uneven.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (12 of 1,563 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
27% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (432 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
HSE guidance applies health and safety law to employers and the self-employed in leisure activities, including duties to protect volunteers, club members, visiting teams and spectators from work-related risks.
Sport England treats safeguarding children and adults as a core duty for sport and physical activity providers.
DCMS estimated sport characteristic and connected activity at £99.6 billion of direct UK output in 2021, equal to 2.5% of total UK output.
Direct sport-related GVA was estimated at £53.6 billion in 2021, or 2.6% of UK GVA.
The UK sport economy is described as the third largest in Europe by direct GVA effect, with a sport GVA share of 2.63%, behind Austria at 4.12% and Germany at 3.90%.

How Leeds sport and leisure companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a blend of memberships, pay-as-you-go bookings, coaching fees, facility hire, event delivery and retained service work. Consumer-facing operators rely on repeat attendance, timetable density and low-friction payments; business-facing operators are more likely to package provision as contracted programmes, venue management or seasonal delivery capacity. Pricing can be per participant, per session, per venue, per season or through monthly membership. Margins often depend on utilisation, instructor availability, insurance costs and the ability to keep facilities compliant without adding too much administration.
Who they sell to
Customer mix varies by activity. Typical buyers include individual participants, parents, local clubs, schools, employers, local authorities, community trusts and event organisers. Decision-makers are often heads of sport, school business managers, HR or wellbeing leads, procurement officers, facilities managers, committee members and operations directors. Small bookings can be self-serve or handled by reception teams, while school, council and employer work tends to involve approved supplier lists, safeguarding checks, insurance evidence and written service scopes. Larger venue or programme contracts usually take weeks or months rather than days.
What they buy
Most sport and leisure firms tend to spend on booking and membership systems, payment processing, CRM, scheduling, access control, incident reporting, safeguarding administration and workforce management. Venue operators may also buy facilities maintenance, cleaning, energy management, security, insurance brokerage, accountancy and health and safety support. Coaching and events businesses are more likely to need recruitment, contractor onboarding, training records, marketing, website management, email campaigns and customer feedback tools. A useful pitch usually connects the category to participation volume, utilisation, compliance evidence or reduced manual administration, rather than abstract productivity claims.
Why and how to sell to them
Sport and leisure buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when a venue opens, a timetable expands, a school or council contract is won, an insurance renewal raises questions, or a safeguarding review exposes gaps in record-keeping. Demand is seasonal, staffing can be patchy, and many operators depend on part-time workers or volunteers, so tools that reduce admin friction can land well. Outbound messages should be specific to operating context: safer participant management for youth activity providers, better utilisation for facility operators, cleaner audit trails for contracted public-sector delivery, and fewer manual handovers for events-led teams.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
