Sport And Leisure Companies in Leicester: 618 Active Firms (2026)
Sport and leisure companies in Leicester operate venues, clubs and activity services for participation, fitness and recreation.
Buying decisions in Leicester tend to sit with venue managers, club committees, school and council commissioners, local employers, and owners of participation-led services. Demand splits between membership income, pay-per-session activity, coached provision, event hire and outsourced recreation contracts. The more commercial end of the cohort usually sells to households and community groups first, then adds schools, sports clubs, corporate wellbeing buyers or public-sector partners where capacity and safeguarding controls allow. Engagements are often local and repeat-use rather than enterprise-style procurement, although venue operations and multi-site activity providers can carry higher contract values and longer service obligations.
Leicester has 618 actively trading sport and leisure companies, a base that looks local-service led rather than dominated by high-turnover operators. Reported employment totals 1,341 people, pointing to a sector with many small teams and a smaller set of venue, coaching and membership operators with more formal staffing. The commercial upper end appears thin, so turnover-ranked lists are likely to be shaped by established operators rather than by a broad group of large recreation businesses. Recent incorporations add churn and experimentation around coaching, events and activity services.
Operating duties vary by activity and venue, so a Leicester operator running supervised participation faces a different control set from a landlord hiring space to clubs. HSE expectations centre on doing what is reasonably practicable to manage work-related risk for staff, volunteers, visiting teams, club members and spectators. Safeguarding is treated as a core operating duty by Sport England, especially where children or adults at risk take part. DCMS, the Home Country Sports Councils and national governing bodies shape the policy, funding and sport-specific standards around that local operating base.
Operators with evidence of safe delivery, dependable attendance and repeat local demand appear better placed than those relying on occasional event income. Membership-led and venue-based models tend to have clearer renewal paths, but they also carry exposure to wage, energy and maintenance costs. Early-commercial providers may keep entering around coaching, activity formats and community provision, while scale-up scarcity keeps the market relatively fragmented. Consolidation, where it occurs, is more likely to follow site availability, council commissioning and safeguarding capability than a pure software-style roll-up.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (4 of 618 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
23% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (147 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
DCMS’s 2024 Sport Satellite Account estimated £99.6 billion of direct sport-related output in 2021, equivalent to 2.5% of total UK output.
Direct sport-related GVA was estimated at £53.6 billion in 2021, or 2.6% of UK GVA.
Health and safety duties vary by activity and venue, with employers and the self-employed required to take reasonably practicable steps to protect staff, volunteers, club members, visiting teams and spectators from work-related risks.
Safeguarding duties cover both children and adults, making safe participation a baseline operating requirement for sport and physical activity providers.
The UK sport economy is described as the third largest in Europe by direct GVA effect, behind Austria and Germany.

How Leicester Sport And Leisure companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Leicester sport and leisure operators usually make money by filling sessions, spaces and programmes, so utilisation matters more than licence-style expansion. Revenue often mixes recurring memberships, block-booked coaching, casual entry, pitch or room hire, events, equipment-related add-ons and contracted delivery for schools or community commissioners. Pricing is typically low-ticket and repeat-use for households, with larger annual or seasonal agreements where an operator manages a facility, runs a programme or supplies coached activity at scale. The service is mostly physical and staff-led, supported by booking software, payments, scheduling and customer communications rather than sold as a purely digital product.
Who they sell to
Households and community clubs form the day-to-day customer base for many Leicester operators, but the more commercial providers also sell to schools, employers, local authorities, charities and sports associations. Decision-makers tend to be venue managers, headteachers, bursars, HR or wellbeing leads, procurement officers, club committees and owner-managers. Smaller bookings are often self-serve or handled by phone, email and local referrals. School, council and employer work usually moves more slowly through safeguarding checks, insurance review, service specifications and committee approval. Contract size varies from termly coaching blocks and membership packages to higher-value outsourced activity or venue-management agreements.
What they buy
Most sport and leisure firms tend to spend on tools that reduce friction around attendance, payment and compliance. Common categories include booking and membership systems, CRM, card payment infrastructure, rota and payroll software, waiver and consent management, incident reporting, marketing automation, web analytics and customer messaging. Venue-based operators also buy cleaning, security, insurance, legal support, accounting, energy management, maintenance, equipment servicing and facilities contractors. Providers working with children or adults at risk often need background-check administration, safeguarding training and policy support. Recruitment services can fit when seasonal coaches, front-of-house staff or qualified instructors are hard to source locally.
Why and how to sell to them
New sites, timetable changes, contract renewals, school-year planning, management hires and visible headcount growth are useful signals that a Leicester sport and leisure buyer may be reviewing suppliers. Operators tend to evaluate vendors when admin overhead starts to limit capacity, attendance is uneven, safeguarding evidence is requested, or maintenance and staffing costs squeeze margins. Outbound angles usually work better when tied to a concrete operating problem: fewer missed bookings, clearer duty-of-care records, faster reconciliation, lower facility downtime or easier reporting to commissioners. Proof from comparable venue, coaching or membership-led operators is more credible than broad claims about growth.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
