Sport & Leisure Companies in the UK: 56,000+ Active Firms (2026)
Sport and leisure companies operate venues, clubs and services for physical activity, recreation and spectators across the UK.
Buying decisions tend to sit with venue operators, club management teams, local authority leisure commissioners, event organisers and service providers around schools, workplaces and community sport. The buying centres are practical rather than purely digital: booking and membership administration, staffing and rota control, facility maintenance, coaching delivery, ticketing, insurance, safeguarding and health and safety. Customer bases range from local participants and members to sponsors, councils, education providers and spectator audiences. Engagements are often recurring but operationally exposed, with seasonality, venue capacity, volunteer involvement and incident management shaping procurement more than conventional software-style renewal cycles.
The UK cohort comprises 56,270 actively trading sport and leisure companies, a scale that reflects how fragmented the sector remains across clubs, venue operators, coaching businesses, recreation services and spectator-facing activity. Reported headcount across the headcount-reporting firms totals 12,657 people, so the employment footprint sits in a labour-intensive operating model rather than a purely asset-light services model. The mix also matters for comparison work: some entities look like local owner-managed businesses, while others carry venue estates, regulated activity, seasonal staffing and public-facing risk.
Obligations vary by activity and venue rather than by a unified sector licence. The HSE treats leisure activity as ordinary health and safety territory: employers and self-employed operators must do what is reasonably practicable to protect staff, volunteers, club members, visiting teams and spectators from work-related risks. Safeguarding sits alongside that for settings involving children or adults at risk, with public-sector sport bodies framing safe participation as a core duty rather than an optional operating policy. Market structure is also partly federated, since national governing bodies set rules and standards for individual sports while public funding and participation measurement sit with government and Home Country Sports Councils.
Commercial development appears likely to favour operators that can combine participation income with venue utilisation, coaching, events and ancillary services, while keeping safeguarding and health and safety processes visible to commissioners and insurers. The long tail of small clubs and service businesses suggests continuing churn, with a thinner layer of revenue-scaled groups available for acquisition or partnership. Consolidation tends to be easier where assets, leases and local authority contracts can be transferred cleanly; it is harder where the value sits in coaches, volunteers, community relationships or sport-specific accreditation.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (554 of 56,270 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
26% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (15,084 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
DCMS valued sport characteristic and connected activity at £99.6 billion of direct UK economic output in 2021, equivalent to 2.5% of total UK output.
Direct sport-related GVA was estimated at £53.6 billion in 2021, or 2.6% of UK GVA.
HSE guidance applies health and safety law to employers and the self-employed in leisure activities, including work-related risks to volunteers, club members, visiting teams and spectators.
Sport England frames safeguarding as a sector duty, covering safe participation for children and adults in sport and physical activity.
The UK sport economy is described as the third largest in Europe by direct GVA effect, behind Austria and Germany.

How UK Sport & Leisure companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Sport and leisure operators usually make money through a blend of memberships, pay-as-you-go admissions, venue hire, coaching fees, ticket sales, sponsorship, merchandising and public or institutional contracts. The operating model is often hybrid: a facility, event or club sits alongside administration software, casual labour, contracted coaches and suppliers for equipment, cleaning, security and maintenance. Pricing tends to be per member, session, pitch, lane, class, ticket, season or contracted service period, with add-ons for equipment hire, food and drink, hospitality or premium access. Margins are shaped by occupancy, weather, school terms, energy costs and staffing ratios, so revenue quality can depend as much on utilisation control as on customer acquisition.
Who they sell to
Most sell to a mixed set of buyers rather than one neat account type: individual participants, parents, amateur clubs, schools, employers, local authorities, sponsors and event audiences. Consumer and member sales are often self-serve or front-desk led, while schools, councils and corporate customers usually involve direct selling, proof of insurance, safeguarding evidence and formal procurement. Internal decision-makers tend to be owner-managers, general managers, operations directors, facility managers, heads of coaching, finance leads and commercial managers. Sales cycles can be short for memberships and courses, but venue management contracts, events, workplace schemes and council-funded activity tend to take longer because site access, risk assessments and budget approval sit in the path.
What they buy
Most sport and leisure firms tend to spend on systems that keep people, places and payments under control. Common buying areas include booking and membership software, ticketing, access control, payment collection, CRM, marketing automation, finance and accounting, HR, payroll, rota planning, learning management, safeguarding administration, incident reporting and health and safety workflows. Larger or multi-site operators may also buy energy management, asset maintenance, cleaning, security, insurance advice, legal support, audit, data analytics and cloud infrastructure. Recruitment, temporary staffing and training services can matter as much as software, particularly where coaches, lifeguards, stewards, volunteers or seasonal staff sit close to the customer experience.
Why and how to sell to them
Sport and leisure buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when capacity, compliance or cash collection becomes harder to manage with spreadsheets, paper forms and informal messages. Useful triggers include a new site or lease, a council tender, a season launch, a larger event calendar, a safeguarding review, rising incident volumes, finance-team change, funding, acquisition, or a move from founder-managed operations to departmental management. Outbound usually lands better when it starts with a specific operating pressure: reducing no-shows, filling unused slots, evidencing safe participation, shortening reconciliation, improving rota cover, or making insurer and commissioner reporting easier. Generic growth language is less useful than showing where admin time, missed revenue or risk exposure is being reduced.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
