Sport & Leisure Companies in Cambridge: 300+ Active Firms (2026)
Sport and leisure companies manage venues, coaching, clubs and physical-activity services for consumers and organisations across Cambridge.
Buying centres sit close to site operations, programme management and local partnership work rather than centralised enterprise procurement. Typical buyers include households, schools, employers, community groups and local organisations that need booked sessions, facility access, competitions, coaching or organised activity. Engagements tend to be SME-scale: memberships, class blocks, venue hire, event fees and seasonal programmes, often sold through repeat local relationships rather than long tender cycles. The operational centre of gravity is staff scheduling, participant welfare, facility availability and cash collection, with demand shaped by school terms, workplace wellbeing budgets and community sport calendars.

Cambridge has 335 actively trading sport and leisure companies in this list, a modest local base within a market shaped by consumer-facing clubs, venues and activity providers. Reported employment totals 794 people, so the footprint is weighted towards small operators rather than large employers. Only 1 firm reports turnover above £5M, which fits a market of owner-managed facilities, coaching programmes, clubs and contractor-led activity services. The more recent formation layer is visible too, with 80 incorporated since 2022, pointing to continued churn around local bookings, fitness provision and community-led programmes.
Sport and leisure sits across several rule sets rather than a unified licence perimeter. HSE guidance applies health and safety law to employers and the self-employed in leisure activities, including duties to take reasonably practicable steps to protect staff, volunteers, club members, visiting teams and spectators from work-related risks. Safeguarding is a separate operating discipline, with Sport England treating safe participation for children and adults as a core duty of the sector. DCMS and the Home Country Sports Councils shape policy, funding and measurement, while national governing bodies set sport-specific rules for coaching, competition and venue standards.
Cambridge’s sport and leisure base appears likely to remain fragmented, with many operators tied to specific venues, coaching networks or community relationships. Scale-up scarcity tends to matter more than demand alone: even well-run programmes can be constrained by site access, instructor availability, insurance, safeguarding workload and seasonal utilisation. Consolidation may come through shared facilities, outsourced programme delivery or closer links with schools and employers, rather than through national roll-ups. Operators that can document safety practice, participation outcomes and repeat booking behaviour should be easier for partners to assess, though margins are likely to stay exposed to rent, energy and staffing costs.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (1 of 335 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
23% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (80 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Sport and leisure is not a single licensed industry; obligations vary by activity and venue.
HSE guidance says health and safety law applies to employers and the self-employed in leisure activities, including duties towards volunteers, club members, visiting teams and spectators.
Sport England frames safeguarding as a sector duty, covering children and adults taking part in sport and physical activity.
DCMS estimated that sport characteristic and connected activity contributed £99.6 billion of direct economic output to the UK in 2021, equivalent to 2.5% of total UK output.
The UK sport economy is described as the third largest in Europe by direct GVA effect, behind Austria and Germany.

How Cambridge Sport & Leisure companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Cambridge sport and leisure operators earn revenue by selling access, instruction and organised participation. Common models include memberships, pay-as-you-go sessions, block bookings, seasonal coaching courses, venue hire, competition entry and employer-funded wellbeing activity. The service shape is usually physical and local: staffed facilities, mobile coaching teams, club programmes, equipment-led activities and event operations. Pricing tends to follow capacity and timetable constraints, so operators care about utilisation by hour, instructor availability, cancellation rates and repeat attendance. Ancillary income may come from equipment rental, food and drink, merchandise or private hire, but the core commercial problem is still matching local demand to safe, staffed delivery slots.
Who they sell to
Typical customers range from parents and individual participants to schools, employers, community groups, clubs and local organisations. Decision-makers are often close to the activity: headteachers, bursars, HR managers, office managers, facilities managers, club committees, programme leads and community organisers. Consumer sales can be self-serve and immediate, while school, employer and community arrangements usually involve email-led qualification, safeguarding checks, insurance evidence and timetable negotiation. Larger public-sector or education-linked work may require quotes, policy documents and references, but most Cambridge operators are not selling through long enterprise procurement cycles. Relationships, locality and trust usually carry more weight than national framework access.
What they buy
Spending tends to cluster around tools and services that reduce admin leakage and keep activity running safely. Most sport and leisure firms tend to buy booking and membership software, payment collection, customer relationship management, rota planning, payroll, accounting, waiver capture, incident logging and reporting. Venue-led operators also need maintenance, utilities advice, cleaning, access control, equipment supply, signage and insurance support. Programme-led firms often spend on recruitment, instructor training, safeguarding administration, marketing, photography, local search, email campaigns and basic analytics. Sellers with services for cash collection, utilisation, retention, compliance evidence or staff scheduling usually have clearer relevance than generic office software pitches.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying interest often appears when operators add a venue, win a school or employer relationship, launch a new term programme, change managers, take on more instructors or face a safeguarding, insurance or health and safety review. The pain is rarely abstract growth; it is missed bookings, manual registers, late payments, underused slots, staff cover gaps and paperwork that slows delivery. Outbound messages tend to work better when tied to specific operating moments, such as filling off-peak capacity, reducing no-shows, evidencing participant welfare or shortening the route from enquiry to paid booking. Proof should be practical: time saved, fewer errors, clearer records and easier repeat purchase.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
