Startup Companies in London: 1,100+ Active Firms (2026)
Startup companies in London build early-stage, scalable products or services across sectors, centred on the capital's venture ecosystem.
Across London, commercial demand tends to sit around revenue and finance teams looking for faster sales, payments or reporting workflows; product and engineering teams buying developer, automation and infrastructure tools; and regulated operating teams in finance, health, energy, aviation or legal services. Buyers range from SME departments testing a focused tool to public-sector or enterprise teams funding pilots before wider procurement. Engagements are usually modular rather than estate-wide at the outset: paid trials, annual subscriptions, usage-based contracts and service-wrapped deployments that need a clear route from founder-led selling to repeatable account expansion.
London has 1,173 actively trading startup-tagged companies in this cohort, giving the capital a sizeable but still selective slice of the early-company market rather than a proxy for every newly formed business. Reported headcount totals 1,207 people, which points to a list weighted towards founder-led and early-commercial employers rather than mature operating groups. The shape matters for researchers: revenue-ranked shortlists will surface only a small mature tail, while most firms are better assessed through product evidence, hiring cadence, customer type and whether the business model can move beyond bespoke project work.
Startup status does not create a separate regulatory perimeter; it is a lifecycle and size label overlaid on ordinary company administration. Incorporated businesses still deal with Companies House filings, including confirmation statements, and identity checks may be required before filings can be made. Permissions then depend on the activity rather than the label. Financial-services, energy-supply, aviation, healthcare and legal-service models carry their own authorisation and conduct requirements, so a London startup selling into those markets faces the same permissioning questions as a more mature operator.
The cohort appears likely to remain fragmented, with many businesses sitting between prototype, paid pilot and repeatable sales. London’s advantage is less about any particular subsector than the concentration of customers, advisers, funders and specialist labour that lets founders test regulated and unregulated models in close proximity. Scale-up scarcity may persist where products need long enterprise procurement cycles or formal permissions before revenue can compound. Consolidation tends to come later, once a category has clearer budgets and acquirers can distinguish durable usage from short-lived experimentation.

Reported turnover
Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (16 of 1,173 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
27% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (326 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Startup is a lifecycle and size tag rather than a separate UK regulatory category, so sector permissions still apply in regulated financial services, energy supply, aviation, healthcare and legal activities.
Most incorporated startups still sit within Companies House administration, including confirmation statement filing and identity-verification checks for some filers.
The UK had 5.5 million private-sector businesses at the start of 2024, with SMEs accounting for 99.8% of that population.
ONS reported 2.725 million UK businesses registered for VAT and/or PAYE as of March 2024, down 0.1% from March 2023.
London was ranked joint #2 globally with New York City in 2024, behind Silicon Valley.

How London startup companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
London startups usually earn revenue by packaging a new workflow into a product or repeatable service, then proving that customers will pay before costs harden. Subscription software, usage-priced infrastructure, transaction fees, licences, marketplace commissions and paid implementation work all appear in the cohort. Early engagements often start as proof-of-value deployments or narrow departmental contracts, with pricing adjusted while the firm tests willingness to pay, delivery effort and churn. Many still rely on founder-led selling, so revenue quality is judged less by headline bookings and more by repeatability, cash collection, gross margin and whether accounts can expand without bespoke work each time.
Who they sell to
Their buyers are often SME owners, departmental heads in mid-market businesses, enterprise technology teams, public-sector commissioners or consumers reached through direct digital channels. Decision makers vary by offer: CFOs usually own finance and reporting spend, CTOs and VP Engineering evaluate developer or infrastructure tools, while Heads of Operations, Procurement or Compliance get involved where workflow change or risk is material. Procurement is typically direct and relationship-led at first; larger accounts tend to introduce security review, legal terms, budget-holder sign-off and, in public-sector contexts, formal frameworks or RFPs. Sales cycles range from self-serve conversion to multi-stakeholder pilots.
What they buy
Most London startups tend to spend on systems that help them acquire customers, ship product, manage cash and pass buyer scrutiny. Common categories include CRM, billing, payments, accounting, analytics, product telemetry, cloud hosting, developer tooling, cyber security, HR, payroll, recruitment, legal, tax, insurance and workspace support. Firms selling into regulated customers also buy compliance advice, audit preparation, security testing and contract review earlier than other young companies. Budgets are usually constrained, so vendors that reduce implementation effort, avoid long commitments and map cost to usage often fit the buying pattern better than estate-wide platforms.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent tends to appear when a startup moves from founder-led delivery to repeatable commercial operations: after funding, senior hiring, a first enterprise customer, regulated-market entry, rising support volumes or a need to evidence security and financial controls. Pain points are usually practical rather than abstract: too much manual work, unclear sales ownership, weak management information, procurement delays, compliance drag and burn-rate pressure. A useful outbound angle is to connect the offer to a near-term operational constraint. Messages that assume abundant budget usually miss; buyers often prefer contained pilots, clear payback logic and less rework as teams specialise.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
