Metals Companies in Leicester: 134 Active Firms (2026)
Metals companies in Leicester manufacture, process and supply steel and other metal components across the surrounding metropolitan area.
Purchasing usually sits with operations, production engineering, site procurement and commercial teams rather than a single technology buyer. The main buying centres are industrial fabrication, construction supply, engineering subcontracting and infrastructure maintenance, with orders ranging from repeat batch work to project-led assemblies and finishing. Customers tend to value local responsiveness, tolerance control, documented quality processes and the ability to fit into existing production schedules. A good commercial fit is normally a mid-market operator: large enough to support regular industrial customers, but still close to the workshop, yard or fabrication cell where delivery risk is managed.

Leicester has 134 actively trading metals companies, a compact local cohort rather than a broad national manufacturing basin. Reported employment across the cohort is 2,296 people, so the footprint is large enough to support specialist suppliers, finishers and installers while still leaving many firms dependent on a small number of customer relationships. The shape fits a practical industrial market: local delivery, repeat purchasing and contracts tied to construction, engineering and plant maintenance.
Metal processors working into construction, engineering and infrastructure supply chains tend to meet a compliance burden shaped by customer audits as much as by statute. Buyers usually ask for material traceability, inspection records, welding and finishing evidence, and documented handling of waste or emissions where processing creates offcuts, dust or surface-treatment residues. For Leicester suppliers, that makes quality paperwork and repeatable shop-floor processes part of the sales motion, especially where components move into regulated end markets through larger contractors.
Future demand appears tied less to new company formation and more to replacement cycles, local capital works and the ability of suppliers to handle shorter production runs without losing margin. The cohort tends to favour practical capability over software-led differentiation: faster quoting, cleaner certification packs and dependable delivery windows matter because customers often buy components as part of wider project schedules. Consolidation may remain selective, with buyers looking for capacity, finishing capability or access to recurring contractor accounts rather than scale for its own sake.

Key facts
About 8% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (12 of 134 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
8% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (12 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Leicester metals firms manufacture, process and supply steel and other metal components for the surrounding metropolitan area.
Local proximity matters where metal parts feed physical-goods supply chains, because transport distance can affect lead times, delivery cost and responsiveness.
Demand tends to be operational rather than speculative, with buyers using these suppliers for manufacturing, maintenance and component-supply needs.
The supplier base spans production-led manufacturers and leaner coordinating or supply firms, so procurement teams may find different service models under the same sector label.

How Leicester Metals companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Leicester metals firms usually earn through a mix of raw-material margin, processing fees and labour charged into physical products. A stockholder may sell cut-to-size steel, aluminium or other metals, while a fabricator or machinist will quote for drawings, tolerances, welding, finishing, site delivery or installation. Pricing tends to follow weight, length, component, batch or project package, with repeat customers using call-off orders and one-off buyers paying against quotation. Services revenue can sit around the product: inspection, certification packs, remedial work, maintenance and subcontract finishing where the customer lacks local capacity.
Who they sell to
Customers are usually industrial operators, construction contractors, engineering subcontractors, maintenance teams and public-sector delivery chains buying through larger contractors. The practical buyer is often an operations director, production manager, commercial manager, quantity surveyor, procurement lead or site engineer rather than a centralised software-style budget holder. Established accounts may reorder by phone, email or customer portal; new supplier relationships tend to involve drawings, samples, credit checks, insurance evidence and quality paperwork before regular spend begins. Larger project work is more likely to arrive through tender packs, framework quotations or contractor procurement systems than through a self-serve channel.
What they buy
Most metals firms tend to spend first on inputs and capacity: metal stock, cutting tools, consumables, machinery servicing, transport, forklifts, electricity, waste handling and protective equipment. The software estate is often practical rather than sprawling, centred on estimating, ERP or MRP, inventory control, production scheduling, CAD file handling, quality management, accounts, payroll and CRM. Sellers also find demand for quality-management certification support, health and safety advice, environmental permitting, credit control, insurance, equipment finance, recruitment and training. Recruitment angles are most relevant where firms need welders, machinists, press-brake operators, estimators, quality staff or drivers.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial pressure usually comes from material price swings, slow quoting, rework, machine downtime, scrap, energy costs and customers asking for tighter evidence of traceability. Metals buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a tender win stretches capacity, a new machine changes workflow, a senior operations or finance hire starts tightening controls, or a firm moves beyond £5M revenue and needs less manual administration. Outbound works better when it is grounded in production risk: fewer missed delivery windows, cleaner certificates, faster quote turnaround, lower waste, improved cash collection or easier audit preparation.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
