Textiles Companies in Leicester: 274 Active Firms (2026)
Textiles companies in Leicester manufacture fabrics, garments and related textile products for consumer and trade markets across the city region.
Buying decisions tend to sit with sourcing, production, merchandising and operations teams rather than a single technology or procurement function. The Leicester cohort is weighted towards business-to-business supply: private-label apparel for retailers, contract manufacture for brand owners, uniform and workwear supply, and specialist fabric or finishing work for industrial customers. Engagements usually move from sampling and buyer approval into repeat production, with price, lead time, fibre content, traceability and rework capacity shaping supplier selection. Smaller workshops serve short-run and overflow work, while larger manufacturers handle multi-style programmes where cutting, sewing, knitting, dyeing or finishing need to be coordinated under tighter product-description controls.
Leicester has 274 active textiles manufacturers, a sizeable city-region cluster rather than a thin tail of occasional incorporations. Reported employment across the Leicester cohort totals 1,483 people, so the footprint is concentrated in manufacturing and workshop roles as well as buying, quality and logistics functions. Commercial scale is uneven: 19 firms report turnover above £5M, while 41 have been incorporated since 2022. That mix points to an older production base with a smaller intake of newer workshops, contractors and niche suppliers alongside firms already selling at trade or retail-supply scale.
Manufacturers operate under product rules rather than a sector licence. Fibre-composition labelling regulations require textile products to carry an English label that is durable, legible, visible and accessible, with responsibility falling on the manufacturer or UK importer. Only prescribed fibre names can be used, and animal-origin components such as fur, leather or bone trigger the required wording on non-textile animal parts. Product descriptions and omissions sit within wider consumer-protection law under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act. UKFT provides a trade-body reference point for fashion and textile businesses, but compliance remains activity-specific and sits close to quality control.
Growth appears more likely to come from compliance-led supplier selection and shorter local production runs than from a broad return to mass apparel manufacturing. Retailers and brand owners tend to favour suppliers that can evidence fibre content, traceability and consistent product descriptions, which may advantage firms with formal quality processes over very small workshops. The cohort still looks fragmented, with relatively few businesses at scale and a continuing flow of newer entrants. Consolidation, subcontracting networks and selective investment in finishing, sampling and traceability systems are more plausible than a single, city-wide expansion cycle.

Key facts
About 6% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (19 of 274 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
14% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (41 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Product compliance centres on fibre-content labelling rather than a single sector licence.
The Textile Products (Labelling and Fibre Composition) Regulations 2012 require labels to be in English, durable, legible, visible and accessible.
Misleading product descriptions and omissions fall under Part 4, Chapter 1 of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024.
The UK consumed 1.42 million tonnes of new textile products in 2022 and generated 1.45 million tonnes of used textiles in the same year.
Global fibre production reached 124 million tonnes in 2023, up from 116 million tonnes in 2022; polyester accounted for 57% of total fibre production.

How Leicester Textiles companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from production margin rather than licensing or subscription income. Leicester textiles firms tend to quote per garment, per metre, per operation or per batch, with sampling, grading, pattern work, embroidery, printing, dyeing and finishing charged separately where they sit outside the main order. Many work from buyer-owned designs and fabrics, while others source cloth, trims and packaging as part of a landed-cost quote. Cash flow is tied to purchase orders, seasonality and rework risk: a late fabric delivery, failed inspection or changed size curve can absorb workshop capacity before the invoice is paid.
Who they sell to
Typical buyers are apparel retailers, online sellers, wholesalers, uniform distributors, hospitality and care operators, and industrial customers needing textile components or protective workwear. The named contact is often a sourcing manager, merchandiser, production controller, operations director or owner-manager, with finance joining when credit terms or larger programmes are involved. Sales are usually relationship-led: sampling, factory visits, compliance checks and reference jobs matter more than self-serve ordering. Contracting ranges from one-off short runs to repeat purchase-order schedules, and larger customers may use supplier onboarding portals, technical packs and periodic re-tendering rather than a formal public RFP.
What they buy
Most textiles manufacturers tend to spend on production planning, stock control, job costing, payroll, warehouse processes and quality documentation before they buy more speculative sales tooling. Useful software categories include ERP or manufacturing resource planning, barcode scanning, CRM, accounting, HR, time-and-attendance, labelling, document management and supplier traceability. Services spend often goes into accountancy, employment law, health and safety advice, product testing, customs support, trade-credit insurance, recruitment and energy brokerage. Physical purchasing can also be material: machinery maintenance, cutting equipment, sewing machines, compressors, dyeing or finishing chemicals, packaging, logistics and premises services all sit close to day-to-day operations.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying triggers often appear when a workshop wins a larger retailer programme, adds a new process in-house, changes production manager, outgrows spreadsheet scheduling or faces tighter labelling and traceability requirements from customers. Credit control and margin leakage are common angles: sellers tend to get more attention when they can connect their offer to fewer remakes, clearer job profitability, faster buyer approvals or cleaner audit packs. Outreach usually lands better if it refers to the production motion — sampling, cutting, make-up, finishing, inspection and despatch — rather than generic manufacturing language. Owner-managed firms may prefer a practical trial over a long discovery process.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
