Automotive Companies in Leicester: 67 Active Firms (2026)
Automotive companies in Leicester build, import, modify and supply vehicles and components for regulated UK and export markets.
Buying centres tend to sit in vehicle and component distribution, specialist modification, repair and servicing networks, and smaller manufacturing or engineering teams that feed UK supply chains. Buyers are usually trade customers: fleet operators, local service networks, parts distributors and manufacturers looking for local capacity rather than consumer retail alone. Engagements tend to range from owner-managed conversion, repair or parts-supply jobs to larger repeat contracts, with documentation, warranty handling and parts traceability built into the sale. The Leicester base gives these firms access to regional logistics and workshops, but their customer set often extends into national distribution and export-oriented supply chains.
Leicester has 67 actively trading automotive companies, a compact local cohort rather than a broad national cluster. The reported employment footprint is 893 people, which points to a mix of workshop-scale operators, parts and distribution businesses, and employers with more substantial payrolls. Turnover distribution is also split: 10 companies report more than £5M in turnover, while 11 have been incorporated since 2022. That leaves much of the market in an established, owner-managed middle ground, where commercial durability matters more than venture-style expansion.
Approval requirements attach to the activity being carried out, not to a standalone automotive licence. Businesses that build, rebuild, radically alter, reconstruct, import or modify certain vehicles may need vehicle approval before sale, registration or use. Routes differ by product and volume: individual approvals and small-volume schemes suit lower-volume work, while series production can require type approval through the UK Type Approval Authority. Great Britain has its own provisional type approval route for vehicles sold or registered in England, Scotland and Wales, while Northern Ireland continues to use EU type approval requirements as applied there.
Commercial momentum appears likely to come from replacement cycles, compliance-led modification work and parts availability rather than speculative manufacturing expansion. Smaller operators tend to defend local service relationships, while scaled distributors and engineering shops have more room to win regional contracts where traceability, approval knowledge and turnaround times matter. Consolidation has been a recurring route in fragmented aftersales and components markets, but Leicester’s cohort still looks weighted towards practical, cash-generating activity. Regulatory pressure is unlikely to disappear, so firms that can document changes to vehicles and components may find it easier to work across trade and public-sector buying channels.

Key facts
About 14% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (10 of 67 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
16% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (11 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Vehicle approval is required when firms build, rebuild, radically alter, reconstruct, import or modify certain vehicles; small-volume routes include Individual Vehicle Approval and Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval.
Series-production manufacturers selling or registering vehicles in England, Scotland and Wales use provisional GB type approval, while Northern Ireland continues to apply EU type approval requirements.
Automotive-related manufacturing contributes £93 billion turnover and £22 billion value added to the UK economy, with around £4 billion invested each year in R&D.
UK factories built 905,117 cars, 120,357 commercial vehicles and 1.6 million engines in 2023, with eight out of 10 UK-built cars exported to more than 140 markets.
Global car manufacturing totalled 75.5 million units in 2024; UK motor vehicle output was 905,233 units, down 12% versus 2023.

How Leicester Automotive companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a mix of trade margin, labour time and project fees. Parts distributors make money on stock availability, negotiated supplier terms and repeat trade accounts; workshops and modifiers charge by job card, labour rate or fixed conversion package; smaller engineering teams may add design, fabrication, testing and documentation fees. Some firms also earn recurring income through fleet servicing, warranty handling or scheduled maintenance, but much of the cash cycle still depends on physical inventory, workshop capacity and prompt payment. Pricing is often practical rather than purely software-like: minimum order values, volume discounts, credit terms and quote-led work all matter.
Who they sell to
Customers are typically fleet operators, repair networks, parts resellers, specialist vehicle users, manufacturers and public-sector buyers with vehicle or equipment obligations. Day-to-day sponsors tend to be fleet managers, operations directors, workshop controllers, procurement leads, engineering managers and finance directors. Repeat parts supply can move through trade counters, phone orders, portals or direct account management, while modification, import or engineering work usually needs specification, drawings, approval evidence and commercial review. Smaller contracts may be won on response time and local trust; larger accounts tend to involve supplier onboarding, insurance checks, quality evidence and tighter credit control.
What they buy
Most Leicester automotive firms tend to spend on systems that keep stock, jobs and compliance visible. Useful categories include inventory management, workshop scheduling, job costing, accounting, CRM, trade credit control, document control, quality management, cyber security, payroll and health and safety tools. Distribution-led businesses often need warehouse systems, barcode processes, logistics support, carrier management and payment services. Workshop and engineering firms may also buy design software, calibration services, test equipment, technical training, certification advice, insurance, waste handling and recruitment support. Sellers should expect practical scrutiny: buyers will ask whether a tool reduces rework, protects margin or saves administrative time.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent tends to appear when a firm wins a new trade account, adds a modification line, takes on more technicians, changes premises, faces warranty leakage or starts handling work that needs clearer approval evidence. Parts shortages, slow job turnaround, cash tied up in stock and inconsistent documentation are common pressure points. Outbound is usually more credible when it refers to operational friction rather than abstract growth: fewer missed parts, cleaner job packs, better margin visibility, faster invoicing or less time spent chasing compliance paperwork. The buyer may be owner-managed, so concise proof, low disruption and clear payback usually carry more weight than broad platform language.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
