Automotive Companies in the UK: 3,300+ Active Firms (2026)
Automotive companies design, build, import, modify and supply vehicles, components and related services across the UK.
Procurement usually sits with engineering, operations, fleet, distribution and aftersales teams, rather than a generic software or office-buying function. The buying centres split across production programmes, specialist vehicle engineering, component supply, import and distribution, and repair or modification networks. Customer relationships tend to be business-to-business, with vehicle manufacturers, fleet operators, distributors, repair groups and export buyers setting demanding documentation and assurance requirements. Engagements are rarely impulse purchases: they often involve qualification, warranty exposure, tooling commitments, approval evidence and repeat supply arrangements, with smaller specialist workshops sitting alongside manufacturers and suppliers with sizeable technical and shop-floor teams.

Across the UK, 3,328 automotive companies are actively trading. Trading scale is uneven: 342 firms report turnover above £5M, while 703 were incorporated since 2022, leaving a long tail of younger or smaller operators beside the established supply base. Reported employment totals 7,806 people among firms with headcount disclosures, a narrower footprint than the sector’s full manufacturing labour base. SMMT frames UK automotive as a broader manufacturing and export economy, so the cohort should be read as a company-level view rather than the whole industry workforce.
Vehicle approval, rather than a sector-wide licence, frames much of the compliance burden. GOV.UK routes modified, rebuilt, reconstructed and imported vehicles through approval processes such as Individual Vehicle Approval, Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval and related schemes; series production sits under type approval. The Vehicle Certification Agency acts as the UK Type Approval Authority for automotive products and as a Technical Service for UN type approval testing. Great Britain and Northern Ireland are not identical compliance territories: GB approval covers England, Scotland and Wales, while Northern Ireland continues to apply EU type approval requirements.
Supplier selection appears to be getting more compliance-led, especially where import routes, modified vehicles and specialist production sit near approval boundaries. Established manufacturers and distributors tend to have an advantage where buyers need documentation, warranty cover and repeatable quality processes; smaller engineering firms can still compete where work is bespoke, low-volume or tied to a particular use case. Consolidation may continue around component supply, aftersales networks and compliance-heavy distribution, but the sector is unlikely to move in lockstep. Vehicle technology changes create demand for new skills, while approval rules and capital requirements keep a lid on how quickly newer firms can scale.

Key facts
About 10% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (342 of 3,328 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
21% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (703 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Vehicle approval is required where a business has built, rebuilt, radically altered, reconstructed, imported or modified certain vehicles.
Small-volume routes include Individual Vehicle Approval and Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval, while series production uses vehicle type approval.
The Vehicle Certification Agency is the designated UK Type Approval Authority for automotive products and a designated Technical Service for UN type approval testing.
Automotive-related manufacturing contributes £93 billion in turnover and £22 billion in value added to the UK economy.
The UK built 905,117 cars, 120,357 commercial vehicles and 1.6 million engines in 2023, with eight out of 10 UK-built cars exported to more than 140 markets.

How UK automotive companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a mix of unit sales, component margins, engineering fees, tooling charges, distribution mark-ups, repair labour and longer-term supply agreements. Production-facing suppliers often quote against drawings, materials, testing and warranty assumptions, with separate charges for prototypes, non-recurring engineering and production tooling. Importers and distributors make money through wholesale margins, installer networks, parts supply and aftersales support. Specialist workshops are more project-led, selling modification, repair, conversion or compliance work around a defined vehicle or fleet requirement. Pricing is usually tied to volumes, lead times, approval evidence and liability, so buyers tend to ask for cost breakdowns rather than a simple list price.
Who they sell to
Customers are usually other businesses: vehicle manufacturers, tiered suppliers, fleet operators, distributors, insurers, repair networks and export buyers. Decision-makers tend to sit in engineering, operations, quality, procurement, aftersales, fleet management and finance, with technical sign-off often carrying as much weight as commercial approval. Typical sales cycles are measured in months rather than weeks where a part, vehicle system or modification must be tested, documented or approved. Smaller workshop jobs can be bought through direct enquiry, but programme supply, distribution agreements and fleet work usually involve formal tenders, approved-supplier checks, site visits and negotiation around warranty, service levels and liability.
What they buy
Most automotive firms tend to spend on systems and services that reduce production risk, track parts and support compliance evidence. Common software categories include enterprise resource planning, manufacturing execution, product lifecycle management, quality management, inventory control, warehouse systems, quoting tools, finance systems, CRM and aftersales case management. Engineering and shop-floor teams also buy test equipment, calibration, tooling, inspection services, technical documentation, cyber security, cloud infrastructure and analytics for warranty, supply chain and fleet performance. Professional services spend often goes towards certification advice, legal support, accounting, recruitment, health and safety, specialist marketing and export administration.
Why and how to sell to them
Automotive buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a programme moves from prototype to production, a new import route needs approval evidence, a fleet contract is won, a repair network expands, or warranty and rework costs start to affect margin. Funding events, senior operations hires and new facility plans can also signal budget, particularly among suppliers moving from bespoke work into repeat production. Outbound messages work better when they attach to a known operational pressure: traceability, audit readiness, supplier qualification, lead-time control, parts availability or aftersales response. Generic productivity claims usually land less well than evidence that a vendor understands engineering sign-off and approval risk.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
