Automotive Companies in London: 200+ Active Firms (2026)
Automotive companies in London build, import, modify and support vehicles and components across the capital's mobility market.
Buying centres tend to sit with engineering, compliance, procurement and aftersales teams rather than consumer retail teams. The better-fit businesses sell into fleet operators, import channels, specialist converters, component buyers and mobility-service operators, with work shaped by approval, testing, documentation and ongoing support. Engagements are usually mid-market and operational: supply agreements, modification programmes, homologation work, parts distribution, or support packages across London and the wider UK supply chain. General dealerships and finance-led vehicle sales sit further from the centre of the page unless they also handle engineering, import, manufacturing or specialist mobility activity.

London has 267 actively trading automotive companies in this list. The cohort is relatively compact by UK standards, but it includes a mix of importers, component suppliers, engineering workshops and mobility-support operators serving the capital’s fleet, repair and specialist-vehicle markets. Reported employment totals 1,148 people, with headcount reported by 124 firms. That points to a market made up largely of small operating businesses, alongside a narrower set of higher-turnover manufacturers, distributors and technical service providers. The London profile is less about volume production and more about coordination, compliance, distribution and aftersales work around vehicles moving through the capital.
Approval requirements shape the market more than a single sector licence. gov.uk guidance requires vehicle approval where certain vehicles have been built, rebuilt, altered, reconstructed, imported or modified, with single and small-volume routes covering individual vehicles, motorcycles and related categories. Series production follows type approval routes, while the Vehicle Certification Agency acts as the UK Type Approval Authority for automotive products and as a Technical Service for UN type approval testing. Great Britain and Northern Ireland also diverge in practice: manufacturers or representatives use provisional GB type approval for England, Scotland and Wales, while Northern Ireland continues to follow EU type approval requirements as applied there.
Commercial progress appears tied to compliance capability as much as to sales reach. London operators that can combine engineering judgement, documentation, importer support and aftersales coordination tend to be better placed than firms built around general retail activity alone. The cohort also looks weighted towards small businesses, so consolidation may come through supplier relationships, service partnerships and specialist acquisition rather than broad manufacturing expansion. Pressure from approval processes, vehicle electrification and changing fleet requirements is likely to favour businesses that can handle certification evidence, component traceability and customer support without becoming dependent on a single buyer group.

Key facts
About 4% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (12 of 267 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
29% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (78 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Vehicle approval is required where a business has built, rebuilt, radically altered, reconstructed, imported or modified certain vehicles, with Individual Vehicle Approval and Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval among the small-volume routes.
The Vehicle Certification Agency is the designated UK Type Approval Authority for automotive products and a designated Technical Service for UN type approval testing.
SMMT puts automotive-related manufacturing at £93 billion turnover and £22 billion value added for the UK economy.
OICA reports UK motor vehicle output of 905,233 units in 2024, down 12% versus 2023.
ACEA reports global car manufacturing of 75.5 million units in 2024, while EU car production fell by 6.2% to 11.4 million units.

How London automotive companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
What they sell is often a bundle of physical supply and technical assurance rather than a single vehicle transaction. Revenue tends to come from component margins, distribution agreements, workshop labour, modification programmes, testing coordination, documentation work and aftersales support. Pricing is usually a mix of quoted project fees, day-rate engineering work, repeat parts orders and service packages tied to a vehicle parc or fleet contract. Import and distribution businesses are closer to wholesale trading, while engineering and conversion firms carry more delivery risk because approval evidence, traceability and customer acceptance sit inside the job.
Who they sell to
Buyers are usually operational rather than brand-led. Typical customers include fleet operators, transport providers, vehicle import channels, repair networks, specialist equipment buyers, public-sector operators and larger manufacturers that need local supply or technical support. Decision-makers tend to sit in engineering, operations, compliance, procurement, finance and aftersales, with senior owners still visible in smaller firms. Standard parts and service work may move through direct sales or framework-style purchasing, while modified vehicles, approval-led work and supply agreements take longer because buyers need technical evidence, liability comfort, delivery certainty and support arrangements after handover.
What they buy
Most London automotive firms tend to spend first on systems that keep parts, vehicles and documents moving together. Relevant categories include inventory control, parts cataloguing, workshop scheduling, quoting, CRM, warranty management, field service, quality management, document control and supplier onboarding. Engineering-led firms may also buy CAD, product lifecycle management, test documentation tools, cloud hosting, cybersecurity, analytics and telematics data support. Services spend often sits around accountancy, employment law, insurance, recruitment, training, certification advice, logistics, marketing and tender support. The common thread is traceability: suppliers that help connect a part, job, approval record and customer commitment usually fit the operating model.
Why and how to sell to them
Commercial intent often appears when a firm moves from ad hoc jobs to repeat programmes. Useful triggers include a new fleet contract, an import arrangement, a modified-vehicle programme, a senior operations or compliance hire, workshop expansion, rising warranty claims, parts shortages or pressure to document approval evidence more consistently. Outreach tends to land better when it is framed around delivery risk, audit trails, technician time, stock visibility, customer response times and margin leakage, rather than generic growth language. These buyers usually need proof that a vendor understands regulated vehicle work and can fit around practical workshop, warehouse and procurement routines.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
