Automotive Tech Companies in the UK: 270 Active Firms (2026)
Automotive tech companies in the UK develop vehicle, mobility and transport software, hardware and data services for commercial operators.
Buying decisions tend to sit with fleet operations, transport planning, vehicle engineering, finance and insurance teams rather than a single technology budget. Suppliers sell into manufacturers and their component chains, logistics businesses, leasing providers, insurers, fleet managers and transport networks, with propositions split between workflow software, telematics and data services, embedded systems, hardware-enabled platforms and specialist engineering. The sales motion is usually integration-led: small operators may buy subscription tools or managed services, while mid-market and enterprise customers expect pilots, vehicle or depot-level rollout plans, support obligations and evidence that systems can work alongside existing maintenance, claims or routing processes.
Around 270 automotive tech companies are actively trading in the UK, making this a compact specialist market rather than a broad horizontal software category. Reported employment across the cohort totals 2,982 people, so the footprint is visible but still concentrated in relatively small teams. Scale is uneven: 49 companies report turnover above £5M, while most appear closer to specialist product, engineering or services businesses serving defined vehicle, fleet or transport use cases. Recent company formation is limited, with 16 firms incorporated since 2022.
Road-vehicle technology sits in a market where buyers care about certification, liability and operational continuity as much as product fit. Embedded systems, retrofit hardware and connected-vehicle tools face longer validation cycles than office software because faults can affect safety, uptime and insurance exposure. Suppliers handling driver behaviour, location, maintenance or claims information also need clear controls over consent, retention and onward sharing. The market structure reinforces that caution: manufacturers, fleets and insurers tend to have established procurement routes, and newer vendors often need channel partners, integration specialists or reference deployments before larger contracts move.
Commercial momentum appears tied to cost control and utilisation rather than speculative mobility themes. Fleet operators, insurers and logistics buyers tend to prioritise tools that reduce downtime, improve claims evidence or make mixed vehicle operations easier to manage. That favours suppliers with domain knowledge and implementation capacity, but it can slow younger firms that need access to vehicles, depots or proprietary workflows. Consolidation remains plausible where software, data and hardware services overlap, especially as buyers prefer fewer integration points and clearer accountability for safety, support and performance.

Key facts
About 18% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (49 of 270 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
5% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (16 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Automotive tech suppliers serve commercial operators managing vehicle performance, routing, asset utilisation and customer-facing mobility services.
Vehicle-operations suppliers tend to sell fleet, diagnostics and vehicle-management tools into operators rather than consumers.
Mobility-stack suppliers look closer to transport software, mobility platforms and data-service providers.
The segment includes software-led firms, hardware-enabled services and asset-light data businesses.

How UK Automotive Tech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Automotive tech firms usually earn revenue through a mix of recurring software fees, per-vehicle or per-depot subscriptions, data licences, hardware sales, installation charges and specialist engineering work. Pure software vendors tend to price by vehicle count, driver, workflow seat or transaction volume, while hardware-enabled providers often bundle devices, connectivity, maintenance and support into managed contracts. Engineering-led firms may sell project work before moving customers onto retainers or support agreements. Paid pilots are common because buyers want proof in live operating conditions, not just a demonstration environment. Margins therefore depend on how much of the offer can be standardised after the first deployment.
Who they sell to
Typical buyers include commercial fleets, logistics operators, leasing businesses, insurers, vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers and transport networks. Decision-making is often shared between fleet operations, engineering, IT, finance, procurement and risk teams, with claims or underwriting specialists involved when driver behaviour or vehicle data affects insurance. Smaller customers may buy directly after a trial or referral, but larger accounts usually require technical review, security assessment, legal negotiation and a staged rollout. Sales cycles tend to be shorter for workflow tools and longer for embedded systems, retrofit hardware or anything that touches safety, maintenance schedules or regulated operational processes.
What they buy
Most automotive tech firms tend to spend on cloud infrastructure, data storage, device connectivity, mapping and routing inputs, security tooling, testing environments and customer support systems. Firms handling telematics, driver scoring or claims evidence also need privacy advice, contract review and controls for data access. Hardware-enabled businesses may buy electronics design support, manufacturing partners, field installation services, inventory management and repair logistics. Commercial teams typically need CRM, billing, proposal management and partner enablement tools, while delivery teams often look for project management, quality assurance, technical documentation and implementation capacity. Recruitment demand is usually around embedded engineering, data engineering, automotive software and customer deployment roles.
Why and how to sell to them
Automotive tech buyers tend to evaluate vendors when customer deployments become harder to manage manually, when a fleet contract moves from pilot to rollout, or when a new insurance, leasing or manufacturer channel changes delivery expectations. Common pressure points include integration with older systems, device failure rates, vehicle downtime, liability, support obligations and evidence for procurement teams. Outbound messages work better when they attach to those operational triggers rather than broad mobility themes. Relevant angles include reducing implementation risk, shortening onboarding for new fleet customers, improving auditability, controlling support costs, or helping technical teams prove that a product is ready for larger account procurement.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
