TIC Companies in Cambridge: 44 Active Firms (2026)
Testing, inspection and certification companies in Cambridge verify product, process and system conformity for regulated UK markets.
Buying centres tend to sit with quality, regulatory, engineering and operations teams, rather than general procurement alone. Work is usually bought when a product, process, facility or supply chain needs an independent assurance step before market access, customer onboarding or renewal of a regulated contract. Cambridge suppliers typically fit a specialist B2B pattern: laboratory testing, calibration, audit support, inspection and certification work for manufacturing, infrastructure, technology and life-science customers. Engagements are often project-based or retainer-like, with repeat work driven by surveillance audits, re-testing, equipment calibration and documentation cycles rather than broad outsourcing mandates.

Cambridge’s active TIC cohort is small: 44 companies, with 253 reported employees across the cohort. That points to a local market shaped more by specialist operators than by high-turnover assurance groups. The city’s wider research, engineering and life-science base gives TIC providers nearby demand for documented compliance, product validation and calibration work, but the cohort itself remains tightly held. Buyers are likely to encounter small teams with technical domain focus, especially where UK product conformity, laboratory procedure or sector-specific assessment requires an auditable record rather than an informal supplier declaration.
Accreditation sits at the centre of UK TIC market structure. GOV.UK describes accreditation as a way to establish that conformity assessment bodies are competent, with accredited assessment functioning as “checking the checkers”. UKAS is the UK’s National Accreditation Body, and government policy recognises UKAS accreditation for organisations operating in the UK. Product conformity work then varies by regime: UKCA and CE requirements depend on the product category, with some cases requiring an appointed conformity assessment body. OPSS guidance places Approved Bodies for Great Britain and UK Notified Bodies for Northern Ireland within a formal appointment and listing process overseen by the Secretary of State.
Cambridge TIC activity appears likely to remain specialist rather than consolidating into a local cluster of large assurance groups. Demand tends to follow regulated product development, laboratory practice, engineered systems and supplier qualification, so providers with credible technical scope and auditable processes should retain a clear role. Margin pressure may still come from customers expecting faster documentation and more repeatable evidence trails. The more defensible operators are likely to be those embedded in narrow technical niches, while generalist inspection and certification work may face more procurement scrutiny. Scale-up scarcity also suggests acquisition interest, where it appears, is more likely to target capability than local market share.

Key facts
11% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (5 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UKAS is the sole UK National Accreditation Body, appointed under the Accreditation Regulations 2009.
GOV.UK describes third-party accreditation as “checking the checkers”, with government recognising UKAS accreditation for UK-operating organisations.
UKCA and CE regimes cover more than 20 product types, with sector-specific rules determining whether third-party assessment and marking are required.
Testing is reported as the largest service line, while certification is commonly identified as the faster-growing service segment.
The UK accounted for 4.5% of the global testing, inspection and certification market in 2025 in one market-research estimate.

How Cambridge TIC companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from paid tests, inspections, calibration certificates, audit preparation and conformity-assessment projects, rather than from licence fees or ad-supported activity. Cambridge providers often price by sample, instrument, site visit, audit day or technical report, with retainer-like income where customers need scheduled surveillance, recurring calibration or maintained certification. The deliverable is evidence: measurements, certificates, reports, corrective-action records and traceable documentation that a customer can place in a technical file, supplier pack or regulated submission. Capacity is constrained by accredited methods, equipment availability and authorised technical staff, so utilisation and turnaround time matter more than volume marketing.
Who they sell to
Customers are typically regulated manufacturers, engineering firms, research-led suppliers, infrastructure contractors and life-science teams that need a defensible third-party view before launch, renewal or customer approval. Buying authority usually sits with quality managers, regulatory affairs, engineering leads and operations directors, with procurement joining once scope, accreditation and liability are clear. Smaller jobs can be ordered directly from an approved supplier list; larger programmes tend to move through framework agreements, statement-of-work negotiation or an RFP. Sales cycles are therefore uneven: routine calibration and testing may be repeat purchase work, while certification, multi-site inspection or new-market conformity work can take months.
What they buy
Most Cambridge TIC firms tend to spend on systems that reduce manual evidence handling: quality management, laboratory information management, document control, audit scheduling, calibration tracking, field-service coordination and customer portals. Commercial teams may also need CRM, quoting, contract management, billing and finance tools because repeat work still depends on precise scope, method and liability terms. Security, backup, access control and compliance training matter where customers share technical drawings, test results or regulated product information. Outside software, common supplier categories include specialist recruitment, technical training, equipment maintenance, insurance, legal support, accountancy, laboratory consumables and facilities services.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when a TIC provider adds a new accredited scope, prepares for assessment, wins a customer with tighter evidence requirements, moves laboratory space or hires a senior quality, operations or commercial lead. Pressure points are fairly consistent: reducing report turnaround times, keeping audit trails clean, allocating scarce technicians, proving traceability and avoiding rework after non-conformities. Outbound messages tend to land better when they reference those operating constraints rather than generic growth. A useful angle is usually cost of delay, audit readiness or higher utilisation of technical staff, with proof framed around regulated service delivery rather than broad productivity claims.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
