TIC Companies in Portsmouth: 66 Active Firms (2026)
Testing, inspection and certification companies assess products, systems and sites for conformity across Portsmouth and its surrounding metropolitan area.
Buying centres tend to sit with quality, engineering, facilities, procurement and compliance teams rather than with a single software-style budget holder. Portsmouth-area providers typically sell to small and mid-market manufacturers, marine and construction contractors, facilities operators, energy-service businesses and professional advisers who need evidence for audits, tender submissions or product approval. Engagements are often practical and recurring: calibration schedules, site inspections, management-system assessments, conformity files and remedial sign-off. A few contracts may be project-based around infrastructure or industrial assets, but many relationships depend on local response, accredited personnel and the ability to translate technical findings into documentation that a customer, insurer or public buyer can accept.
Portsmouth has 66 TIC companies actively trading, a compact local cohort rather than a broad national cluster. The reported employment footprint is 472 people, which points to a market made up mainly of specialist teams rather than large labour pools. Only 2 firms report turnover above £5M, while 5 have been incorporated since 2022, so the list is weighted towards established small operators with a narrow tail of higher-revenue businesses. That shape fits the South Coast demand base: marine, construction, facilities and manufacturing clients need repeatable assurance work, but not always enterprise-scale supplier networks.
Accreditation sits close to the centre of this market because many customers are not buying an opinion; they are buying evidence that a competent body has followed an accepted conformity-assessment process. GOV.UK frames third-party accreditation as “checking the checkers”, and UK practice routes accreditation through the UK’s National Accreditation Body. Product-facing work also has to account for UKCA and CE marking regimes, with sector rules determining when third-party assessment is required. Bodies appointed for Great Britain or Northern Ireland sit within the market-conformity framework, so local providers that lack appointment or accreditation tend to work as subcontractors, advisers or inspection specialists rather than full certification authorities.
Portsmouth’s TIC base appears likely to remain service-led and relationship-led, with incremental demand tied to maintenance cycles, audit calendars and product-conformity requirements. The scarcity of larger revenue firms suggests fewer local scale-up platforms and more owner-managed specialists, which may favour partnerships and subcontracting over formal consolidation. Regulatory pressure tends to help accredited providers defend their role, but it also raises the cost of technical staff, quality systems and external assessment. Newer entrants may find openings in documentation-heavy niches and sector-specific inspection work, while broader certification authority status remains harder to reach without accumulated credentials and recurring volumes.

Key facts
About 3% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (2 of 66 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
7% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (5 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
UKAS is the sole UK National Accreditation Body, appointed under the Accreditation Regulations 2009, and government policy says UK-operating organisations should seek accreditation through UKAS.
GOV.UK says UKCA and CE regimes cover more than 20 product types, with sector-specific rules deciding whether third-party assessment and marking are required.
OPSS says UK conformity assessment bodies seeking appointment as Approved Bodies for Great Britain or UK Notified Bodies for Northern Ireland are appointed by the Secretary of State and listed on the UK Market Conformity Assessment Bodies database.
Testing is commonly identified as the largest service line, while certification is commonly identified as the faster-growing service segment.
UKAS states that accreditation and accredited services are recognised internationally through European and global accreditation groups, helping reduce repeated assessments and technical barriers to trade.

How Portsmouth TIC companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Portsmouth TIC providers usually earn revenue from repeat service lines rather than one-off product sales. Calibration, inspection and testing work is commonly priced per asset, per site visit, per sample or on an annual service schedule, while certification and management-system support tends to be scoped as audit days, assessment packages and renewal cycles. Higher-value work often combines field attendance, laboratory or workshop activity, technical review and a formal report that can sit in a customer's audit trail. Margin depends less on software-like scale and more on assessor utilisation, travel time, accreditation scope, equipment upkeep and the ability to schedule recurring work without letting response times slip.
Who they sell to
Customers are usually practical buyers with quality, engineering, operations, facilities or procurement responsibility. Small purchase orders can be approved by operations or quality managers, but larger frameworks tend to involve procurement, finance and technical sponsors. Sales cycles are shorter where a client needs routine calibration or emergency inspection, and longer where a buyer is appointing a certification partner, adding a site, or answering a public-sector tender. Most work is sold through direct relationships, referrals from engineers and consultants, subcontracting channels and formal tender portals. Decision makers care about accreditation, method coverage, turnaround, report acceptance and whether the provider can attend sites without creating avoidable downtime.
What they buy
Most TIC firms tend to spend on systems that reduce manual administration around jobs, certificates and renewals. That can include CRM, quoting, scheduling, field-service management, document control, quality management, asset registers, calibration records, laboratory workflow, invoicing, credit control and management reporting. They also buy specialist insurance, legal and compliance advice, accounting, recruitment, training, fleet support, equipment maintenance, courier or sample logistics, website and search marketing, and cyber security. Technical teams may be wary of generic tools if they create duplicate entry, so sellers usually need to show how a system preserves traceability, version control, competency records and report sign-off.
Why and how to sell to them
TIC buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when recurring work starts to outgrow spreadsheets, when an accreditation scope changes, when assessors are hard to schedule, or when tenders require better evidence of competence, insurance, service levels and audit history. Other triggers include new technical managers, branch moves, equipment investment, a lost renewal, an insurer request or a customer pushing for shorter turnaround. Outbound angles usually work better when tied to operational leakage: missed calibration dates, slow certificate production, low assessor utilisation, rekeyed job notes or weak visibility over margins by service line. Claims should be practical and evidenced, not framed as abstract productivity.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
