Veterinary Companies in the UK: 2,900+ Active Firms (2026)
Veterinary companies provide animal healthcare, diagnostics, surgery and nursing services across the UK’s regulated pet and livestock care market.
Demand splits across primary companion-animal care, referral and specialist cases, equine and livestock work, and practice-support services. Buyers are not only pet owners: farms, yards, rescue organisations and other practices also commission clinical capacity, diagnostics, surgery, nursing and out-of-hours cover. Engagements tend to be case-based rather than long enterprise contracts, although larger mixed practices and referral groups can build recurring relationships through herd health planning, chronic-care pathways, laboratory work and post-operative reviews. The commercial test is often administrative as much as clinical: written estimates, prescription handling, complaints processes, ownership disclosure and consistent clinical governance all shape buyer trust.

Around 2,945 veterinary companies are actively trading in the UK. The cohort is weighted towards small operators, but 26 companies report turnover above £5M, giving researchers a narrow revenue-scale segment to separate from owner-operated practices and local clinic groups. Recent formation is also visible, with 648 incorporated since 2022. Reported headcount totals 1,925 people across 61 firms, with 100% of that employment-reporting group showing staff. That employment footprint should be read as a partial view of formal company reporting rather than a full measure of veterinary labour across practices, locums, nurses and corporate groups.
UK veterinary surgeons sit under the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons through the Veterinary Surgeons Act, with the RCVS responsible for the professional register, undergraduate veterinary education, certain overseas qualifications and professional conduct. Veterinary nursing is also formally recognised through the RCVS register. The CMA’s investigation into household pet veterinary services adds a separate competition lens: price lists, written estimates, prescription fee caps, ownership transparency and complaints handling are now central operating issues. A recurrent policy tension is that the legal regime applies mainly to individual vets, while modern practice ownership and pricing decisions often sit at business level.
The cohort appears weighted towards smaller and newer operators, with comparatively few firms reaching revenue scale. That tends to keep local reputation, clinician retention and day-to-day capacity near the centre of competition, rather than national brand reach alone. CMA scrutiny is likely to keep ownership disclosure, price visibility and prescriptions in view, particularly where household pet owners face limited local choice. Consolidation may continue around referral capacity, diagnostics and out-of-hours coverage, but independent practices still have room where continuity of care and local access matter. Margin pressure from staffing, premises and equipment costs appears likely to favour operators with tighter scheduling and clearer client communication.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (26 of 2,945 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
22% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (648 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons regulates UK veterinary surgeons under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and maintains the Register of Veterinary Surgeons.
Veterinary nursing is formally recognised under the 2015 Supplemental Royal Charter, with the RCVS maintaining a Register of Veterinary Nurses.
The CMA’s veterinary services market investigation set out legally binding measures covering price lists, written estimates, prescription fee caps, ownership transparency and complaints processes.
The vets sector is valued at over £6.7 billion, with demand linked to 10.6 million pet dogs, 10.8 million pet cats and 800,000 pet rabbits in the UK.
UK corporatisation rose from 10% in 2013 to 60% in 2024, compared with 16% of European veterinarians working in group-owned structures.

How UK veterinary companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Veterinary revenue is usually a blend of consultation fees, diagnostics, procedures, medicines, nursing, imaging, laboratory work and out-of-hours cover. Routine companion-animal work is mostly priced per appointment or treatment episode, with itemised estimates and payment at point of care or through insurance administration. Referral, equine and livestock services can carry higher case values because they involve specialist equipment, travel, surgery, hospitalisation or longer clinical pathways. Some practices add recurring income through preventive-care plans, herd health agreements, chronic-condition reviews and outsourced support for other clinics, but the commercial unit is still often the animal, case or client relationship rather than a long software-style contract.
Who they sell to
Household pet demand is mainly sold direct to owners, while farm, equine, charity and inter-practice work tends to involve more repeat purchasing and professional referral. In smaller practices, the practice owner, clinical director or practice manager often shapes buying and service decisions; in larger groups, operations, finance, procurement and clinical governance teams usually have a role. Customer acquisition is usually local and reputation-led, supported by referrals, search, call handling and reminders. Sales cycles are short for routine appointments, longer for specialist referral relationships, farm work, laboratory arrangements and practice-support services, where trust, capacity and clinical assurance matter more than a one-off price comparison.
What they buy
Most veterinary operators tend to spend first on systems and services that keep clinical capacity usable: practice-management software, appointment scheduling, client communications, billing, payments, prescription workflows, stock control, insurance-claim administration and reporting. Clinical spend includes diagnostic equipment, imaging, laboratory services, consumables, medicines, waste handling, premises maintenance and equipment servicing. Back-office buying usually covers payroll, HR, rota planning, recruitment, locum support, accountancy, legal advice, cyber security, telephony and marketing for local demand capture. Larger groups are more likely to centralise procurement, analytics, finance systems and compliance tooling, while smaller practices often favour suppliers that reduce admin without changing clinical routines too much.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when practices add sites, expand referral capacity, change ownership, hire a practice manager, extend opening hours or face pressure on appointment availability. CMA scrutiny also gives suppliers an entry point where they can help with price visibility, written estimates, prescription handling, complaints workflows or evidence of consistent process. The more credible outbound angles are practical rather than visionary: fewer missed calls, cleaner invoicing, faster claims, lower stock leakage, better rota coverage, fewer manual reminders and clearer audit trails. Veterinary buyers tend to respond to proof that a supplier understands clinical interruptions, client anxiety, RCVS obligations and the limited time senior clinicians have for vendor evaluation.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
