Aerospace Companies in the UK: 1,100+ Active Firms (2026)
Aerospace companies in the UK manufacture aircraft parts, structures and systems within CAA-regulated, export-led supply chains.
Purchasing is shaped less by generic industrial demand than by programme access, qualification status and repeatable production capability. The main buying centres tend to be airframe and structures teams, propulsion groups, avionics and electrical-systems teams, and defence supply-chain buyers where traceability is part of the sale. Customers are typically prime contractors, tiered suppliers, defence integrators and civil aviation programmes, with a bias towards B2B rather than consumer markets. Engagements are rarely one-off component sales: even specialist suppliers usually face sample approval, audit, documentation and ongoing quality assurance before becoming production suppliers.
Around 1,170 aerospace manufacturing companies are actively trading in the UK, making this a specialist manufacturing cohort rather than a broad industrial category. The reported employment footprint is 5,936 people, which points to a workforce centred on skilled production, inspection and engineering roles. The company base spans small specialist suppliers and mid-market manufacturers, with revenue-generating activity tied to qualification status, repeat orders and access to civil aviation and defence supply chains.
Airworthiness approval and certification evidence shape route-to-market for regulated aviation products. The CAA’s framework covers production-organisation approvals for aircraft, products, parts and appliances, so suppliers making regulated components may need to prove that quality systems, traceability and release processes meet aviation requirements before serial production. International market access also matters. ADS frames UK aerospace as an export-facing sector, and its commentary points to the CAA’s rulemaking and certification role alongside the need for alignment with EASA and the US FAA when products move across civil aviation supply chains.
Future competition appears likely to hinge on qualification depth rather than simple capacity addition. Newer entrants tend to face long approval cycles, while established suppliers can be constrained by audit load, skilled labour availability and the cost of maintaining certified processes. The cohort also appears exposed to consolidation, as primes and tiered suppliers prefer partners that can absorb documentation, inspection and export-control work without adding delivery risk. Growth has been easier for firms embedded in repeat programmes; early-commercial manufacturers may find that credibility, certification readiness and working-capital discipline matter as much as engineering capability.

Key facts
About 14% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (169 of 1,170 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
15% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (184 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Manufacturers of regulated aviation products may need CAA Part 21 Subpart G production-organisation approval for Part 21 aircraft, products, parts and appliances.
ADS highlights alignment with EASA and the US FAA as a practical issue for internationally traded aerospace products.
A US government market guide says 70% of domestic aerospace production is exported.
The US International Trade Administration describes the UK aerospace industry as the second largest in the world behind the United States, while noting that the country does not produce large civil aircraft.
UK aerospace manufacturing is concentrated on engines, helicopters, wings, structures and aircraft systems rather than complete large-aircraft assembly.

How UK aerospace companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from programme-linked manufacture rather than catalogue sales. Firms may charge for non-recurring engineering, tooling and test work before moving into unit-priced production, with spares, repairable items and obsolescence support adding income once equipment is in service. Defence work can include milestone billing or cost-plus elements, while civil aviation supply is more often governed by framework agreements, quality plans and agreed delivery schedules. Gross margin depends on yield, inspection burden, materials availability and the ability to recover engineering change costs when drawings or certification evidence move.
Who they sell to
Most buyers are technical and commercial groups inside prime contractors, tiered manufacturers, defence integrators and civil aviation programmes. Early conversations may start with engineering, but supplier quality, programme management, export-control, procurement and finance teams usually shape whether a supplier is accepted. Contract values vary with production stage: prototype and qualification work can be modest, while serial supply can become a multi-year account if the part remains on programme. Sales cycles are typically long because sampling, audits, material traceability and commercial terms sit between an initial capability discussion and a purchase order. RFPs, approved-supplier lists and direct account selling all matter.
What they buy
Most aerospace manufacturers tend to spend on systems that protect traceability, delivery confidence and audit readiness. Relevant software categories include ERP, MRP, quality management, document control, production scheduling, PLM, CAD/CAM, supplier portals, cybersecurity, backup and identity management. Operational spend often runs into metrology equipment, calibration, non-destructive testing, tooling, materials planning, facilities maintenance and specialist logistics. Services sellers may find demand for certification support, export-control advice, technical documentation, accountancy, R&D tax support, recruitment and interim quality management. The better fit is usually a supplier that can work around controlled drawings, revision histories and customer audit trails rather than a generic manufacturer workflow.
Why and how to sell to them
Aerospace buyers tend to evaluate vendors when qualification workload increases: a new programme award, a CAA-related production approval, an upcoming customer audit, a move from prototype build to repeat manufacture, or a backlog that exposes inspection and planning bottlenecks. Outbound messages usually need to attach to risk reduction rather than general efficiency. Useful angles include fewer escapes, faster certificate packs, lower rework, clearer supplier evidence and better visibility of late materials. The 169 firms above £5M turnover are more likely to have formal procurement and budget owners; the 184 incorporated since 2022 may respond more to certification readiness and first-customer credibility.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
