Cleantech Companies in Glasgow: 31 Active Firms (2026)
Cleantech companies develop low-carbon products, energy-efficiency services and resource technologies for organisations in and around Glasgow.
Buying centres tend to sit in estates, facilities, energy procurement, sustainability and operational engineering rather than a single technology budget. Glasgow-area cleantech suppliers in this cohort sell mainly to commercial landlords, manufacturers, public-sector bodies and infrastructure operators, with engagements that range from site assessments and retrofit planning to equipment-led projects and managed efficiency services. The buying motion is often consultative: customers need evidence of payback, compliance fit and operational disruption before committing. Lean high-revenue operators can sit beside small technical teams, so turnover and employee presence are better qualifiers than a pure software-style scale signal.
Glasgow has 31 actively trading cleantech companies in this cohort, making it a compact local market rather than a broad regional catch-all. Reported headcount totals 593 people, giving the group a visible employment footprint despite its small company count. Revenue is unevenly distributed: 5 firms are above £5M turnover, while 5 firms were incorporated since 2022, leaving a mix of established operators and newer entrants. For researchers, that structure matters because a short list can still contain both procurement-ready suppliers and early commercial businesses with narrower delivery capacity.
Work sold into buildings, energy systems, waste, water or transport infrastructure usually runs through procurement and assurance gates before it reaches deployment. For Glasgow suppliers, customers may ask for emissions evidence, health-and-safety documentation, insurance cover, installation competence and aftercare arrangements, especially where projects affect occupied sites or operational assets. Public-sector and infrastructure buyers also tend to favour auditable claims over generic environmental positioning. The market structure is therefore less about a single cleantech licence and more about proving that the service can be delivered within the buyer’s existing compliance, maintenance and capital-approval processes.
Future activity appears likely to favour firms that can turn emissions or resource-efficiency claims into auditable operational results. Buyers tend to be cautious where projects touch live buildings, industrial processes or public assets, so suppliers with repeatable delivery methods may find an easier route than those selling concept-led technology. The cohort’s mix of lean operators and small teams also suggests uneven capacity: some businesses will be able to support procurement-heavy customers, while others may remain specialist subcontractors. Consolidation has been a plausible path where installation, monitoring and maintenance capabilities sit in separate firms.

Key facts
About 16% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (5 of 31 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
16% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (5 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Glasgow-area cleantech firms span low-carbon products, energy-efficiency services and resource technologies rather than a single technology niche.
Buyer demand appears tied to practical decarbonisation work, including lower energy use, resource handling and lower-carbon alternatives for commercial and public-sector operations.
Consultancy, services, engineering and product revenue can sit close together in this segment, which makes procurement routes less uniform than in pure software markets.

How Glasgow cleantech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Glasgow cleantech firms typically make money from a blend of consultancy, project delivery, equipment sales, monitoring software and managed services. Early engagement often begins with audits, feasibility work or energy modelling, then moves into installation, optimisation or ongoing reporting if the payback case survives scrutiny. Revenue can be one-off project fees, margin on hardware, retained service contracts or performance-linked arrangements tied to reduced energy use, waste or emissions exposure. The commercial unit is usually a site, asset portfolio or operational process rather than a licence seat, so proposals need to translate technical claims into avoided cost, compliance evidence and delivery risk.
Who they sell to
Most sell into organisations with estates, utility spend or resource-heavy operations: commercial property owners, manufacturers, transport and logistics operators, universities, health bodies, councils and infrastructure contractors. The first conversation may sit with sustainability or facilities teams, but budget approval often involves finance, procurement, operations and, for industrial sites, engineering managers responsible for uptime. Contracting tends to be direct and relationship-led, with public-sector work routed through frameworks or tenders. Sales cycles are usually longer where site access, health-and-safety review, capital approval and operational disruption are material to the buyer’s decision.
What they buy
Most Glasgow cleantech suppliers tend to spend on tools and services that help them prove outcomes and deliver projects without adding too much fixed overhead. That can include CRM and bid tracking, project management, field-service scheduling, carbon and energy reporting, finance systems for grant-funded or milestone-based work, and document control for method statements, insurance and customer assurance packs. They may also need specialist recruitment, installation partners, compliance advice, technical marketing and outsourced finance support. Hardware-led firms add supply-chain, stock, calibration, warranty and aftercare requirements that look closer to industrial services than pure software.
Why and how to sell to them
Cleantech buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a project pipeline becomes less experimental: new framework wins, larger retrofit programmes, capital-equipment orders, grant-backed delivery deadlines, leadership changes or a move from advisory work into recurring monitoring and maintenance. Outbound works better when it speaks to bid conversion, margin control, proof of savings, asset downtime and audit-ready reporting rather than generic climate positioning. Glasgow firms with small technical teams may value suppliers that reduce admin around surveys, installations, certification and customer reporting. A useful sales angle is usually operational: help them deliver more sites with fewer surprises.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
