Cleantech Companies in Leeds: 40+ Active Firms (2026)
Cleantech companies in Leeds develop low-carbon technologies, energy-efficiency services and environmental solutions for local and national buyers.
Buying centres tend to sit in estates, facilities, energy, sustainability, procurement and operations teams, rather than in a narrow technology function. Suppliers usually sell to commercial landlords, industrial operators, public-sector estates and infrastructure buyers, with propositions framed around lower energy use, emissions reduction, compliance evidence or resource efficiency. Engagements appear to range from site-level audits and installations to repeat maintenance work and framework-style contracts. The typical buyer is likely to care as much about delivery risk, payback evidence and ongoing support as about the underlying technology, which gives service-led firms a visible role alongside equipment and systems specialists.
Leeds has 41 actively trading cleantech companies, giving the city a compact, project-led cohort. Reported headcount totals 450 people, consistent with businesses that combine technical design, installation, maintenance and advisory work. Only 2 firms have revenue above £5M, and 7 were incorporated since 2022, so the market still appears weighted towards small and mid-sized operators rather than a broad base of scaled employers. The commercial base is likely to be split between local estates buyers, industrial sites, public-sector customers and infrastructure work tied to decarbonisation or environmental performance.
Operating constraints tend to come from the end market rather than from a dedicated cleantech rulebook. Suppliers selling into public-sector estates must fit procurement, budget and assurance cycles; installers and environmental-services providers are often judged against safety, planning, technical certification and ongoing performance evidence. For industrial and infrastructure buyers, the sales process can involve site surveys, payback modelling, maintenance liabilities and evidence that emissions or resource-use claims can be audited. That makes the market less like pure software procurement and more like applied engineering, with sales cycles shaped by risk allocation as much as climate targets.
Leeds appears to have a practical cleantech base: local services, installation capacity and environmental-performance work sit closer to the centre than venture-style hardware bets. That should keep demand linked to the capital spending cycles of estates, councils, industrial sites and infrastructure operators. The smaller company profile also means consolidation can come through specialist contractors adding low-carbon capability, rather than through standalone platform winners. As buyers ask for evidence of savings, maintenance cover and compliance comfort, firms with repeatable delivery processes tend to look better placed than those relying on bespoke project work.

Key facts
About 4% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (2 of 41 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
17% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (7 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Leeds cleantech firms work across low-carbon technologies, energy-efficiency services and environmental solutions for local and national buyers.
Customer demand appears linked to practical decarbonisation work: audits, equipment, software, services and operational changes.
Service operators, technology-led suppliers and project-based providers sit inside the same local cleantech label.

How Leeds cleantech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Leeds cleantech suppliers usually earn through a mix of project fees, equipment margin, consultancy, installation work, managed service contracts and maintenance retainers. Some sell physical systems, metering hardware or control equipment; others package audits, feasibility studies, monitoring and reporting into service-led engagements. Pricing often follows the risk profile of the site: a fixed-fee survey, a quoted installation, then support priced per asset, site or contract term. Where savings claims are central, buyers expect baselines, payback assumptions and responsibility for performance to be clear before sign-off. Cash flow can be lumpy because revenue follows capital projects, although maintenance and compliance work can create repeat income.
Who they sell to
Their customer base tends to be local and regional estates owners, manufacturers, logistics sites, housing providers, councils, universities and infrastructure operators. The internal sponsor is often a Head of Estates, Facilities Director, Energy Manager, Sustainability Lead, Operations Director, CFO or procurement team, with technical approval from engineering or health and safety staff. Smaller deals may come through direct relationships and referrals; larger public-sector or infrastructure work usually requires framework access, tenders, site visits and documented assurance. Sales cycles are therefore rarely purely online. Most buyers want a quantified business case, proof that installation will not disrupt operations, and clear aftercare before they commit budget.
What they buy
Most cleantech firms tend to spend on tools and services that make project delivery less manual: CRM, quoting, field-service management, job scheduling, fleet tracking, document control, project accounting and customer reporting. They may also need energy-modelling software, monitoring systems, data capture, cyber security, environmental compliance advice, technical certification support, insurance, legal review for installation contracts and specialist recruitment. Because many operate with small delivery teams, practical back-office gains often matter more than abstract change-management claims. Sellers should expect interest where a product reduces time spent on surveys, proposals, evidence packs, maintenance administration or grant and tender documentation.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying triggers tend to appear when a firm wins a repeat maintenance contract, moves from advisory work into installation, hires operations or finance leadership, bids for public-sector frameworks, or needs tighter evidence around carbon and savings claims. Revenue inflection can expose weak scheduling, stock control, margin tracking and cash collection; new tender activity can expose gaps in policies, certifications and case evidence. Outbound tends to work when it is anchored in delivery risk rather than climate rhetoric. A useful approach is to show how similar site-based businesses shorten surveys, reduce rework, manage subcontractors, protect margins or produce audit-ready customer reporting.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
