Cleantech Companies in London: 300+ Active Firms (2026)
Cleantech companies in London develop low-carbon technologies, energy-efficiency services and resource-management solutions for urban markets.
Buying centres tend to sit with sustainability teams, energy managers, estates directors, infrastructure owners and public-sector procurement leads, rather than a single software budget holder. London suppliers in this area sell into commercial property, industrial sites, local authorities and urban infrastructure projects, with a mix of engineered systems, data tools, efficiency services and delivery capability. Engagements usually start as feasibility work, site-level pilots or compliance-led assessments, then move towards estate roll-outs, managed services or project-delivery contracts when the economics can be evidenced.
London has 396 actively trading cleantech companies, a cohort that sits between specialist engineering consultancies, software-led emissions tools, project developers and resource-management operators. The reported employment footprint is 982 employees, so the market is not just a shell-company population; it includes operating teams with delivery capacity. Scale is uneven, however: 46 firms have turnover above £5M, while 82 were incorporated since 2022, leaving a visible early-commercial layer alongside a smaller revenue-generating group.
Energy-facing and built-environment suppliers face a regulation stack that is activity-specific rather than sector-wide. A heat-network operator, a building-efficiency adviser and a recycling-infrastructure provider sit under different licensing, planning, procurement and reporting regimes, even when each is labelled cleantech. London also gives the sector a particular market structure: dense commercial property, public-sector estate management and urban infrastructure procurement create demand for proof of savings, delivery risk transfer and contract evidence before buyers move beyond trials.
Commercial traction appears to favour suppliers that can connect decarbonisation claims to operating budgets, compliance requirements or costed asset plans. Hardware-heavy businesses may remain slower to scale than software-led monitoring and optimisation providers, because procurement, installation and service obligations lengthen the sales cycle. Consolidation also seems plausible where fragmented specialists serve similar property, energy and resource-management buyers. The cohort’s early-commercial layer suggests continued experimentation, but buyers are likely to keep rewarding evidence of delivered savings over broad climate positioning.

Key facts
About 11% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (46 of 396 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
20% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (82 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
London cleantech firms sell into property, transport, finance and public-sector buying centres, so procurement routes vary by end market.
The category spans buildings, infrastructure, energy management and resource-efficiency work rather than a single operating model.
Buyer qualification is usually clearer when split by delivery model: service-led operators, project businesses and technology vendors.

How London cleantech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from a blend of consulting, project delivery, software subscriptions, licence fees, maintenance and managed service income. Hardware-facing suppliers may earn through equipment sales, installation margins and ongoing service contracts, while software-led firms tend to charge recurring fees for monitoring, reporting or optimisation tools. Some service models link pricing to measured savings or delivered outcomes, although many buyers still prefer fixed-scope assessments before committing budget. Engagements often move from a diagnostic phase into implementation only when payback, compliance value or operational risk reduction is clear enough for finance and procurement teams.
Who they sell to
Typical customers are commercial landlords, industrial operators, local authorities, infrastructure owners and property-heavy organisations with exposed energy, waste, water or emissions costs. The buyer is often not one person: sustainability leads shape the requirement, energy and estates teams test feasibility, procurement controls process, and finance teams usually challenge payback assumptions. Software-only tools may sell through direct sales or self-serve trials, but site-based work tends to involve tenders, partner referrals and multi-stage approval. Contract values vary widely, with shorter cycles for assessments and longer cycles where installation, public procurement or operational handover is involved.
What they buy
Most London cleantech firms tend to spend on tools and services that help them prove outcomes, deliver projects and manage regulated commercial relationships. Common needs include CRM, proposal management, bid support, project accounting, field service workflows, asset monitoring, cloud hosting, cybersecurity, analytics, billing and customer reporting. Engineering-led teams also buy design support, installation capacity, insurance, legal advice, health and safety services, certification support and specialist recruitment. Software-led suppliers are more likely to buy developer tooling, data infrastructure, product analytics and customer success systems, particularly when they are moving from bespoke deployments towards repeatable contracts.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent tends to appear when a firm wins larger site deployments, moves from pilots into repeatable delivery, hires senior commercial or operations staff, or faces pressure to document savings for customers. Common pain points are long procurement cycles, evidence-heavy sales processes, delivery coordination, working-capital strain on hardware projects and the need to translate climate claims into operational metrics. Outbound messages are usually more credible when they refer to payback evidence, tender conversion, installation control, customer reporting or margin protection. Broad sustainability language is weaker than a clear link to cost, compliance or delivery risk.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
