Edtech Companies in the UK: 300+ Active Firms (2026)
Edtech companies in the UK build learning platforms, assessment tools and school software for education providers, employers and learners.
Buying centres tend to sit with school senior leadership teams, university learning-technology departments, HR and learning functions, and public-sector procurement teams. The sell is usually not just software access: suppliers often need onboarding, content migration, integration with learner records, evidence around outcomes, and support for safeguarding and data-protection questions. Contracts range from departmental tools to institution-wide platforms, with lower-mid-market and growth-stage vendors more likely to handle formal tendering, multi-stakeholder evaluation and renewal cycles tied to academic budgets. Direct-to-learner models appear, but this cohort is mainly shaped by business-to-business and public-sector purchasing.
At UK level, the active cohort contains 390 trading companies, a narrower software-led slice than wider descriptions of the edtech market. Reported employment totals 2,177 people, pointing to a supplier base with many small operators rather than a long tail of large employers. For researchers, the useful read is less a single national market size than a mixed procurement landscape: education buyers, employer learning teams and learner-facing channels each create different sales cycles.
UK edtech is not licensed as a single regulated industry. In practice, the compliance burden follows the use case: learner records, assessment outputs, classroom monitoring and direct-to-child services raise questions under ICO expectations, UK GDPR, e-privacy rules and the Children’s code. School-provided services can still fall within children’s privacy rules where the supplier helps decide why or how personal information is processed. Department for Education digital and technology standards also shape procurement, particularly around broadband, wireless networks, governance, filtering, monitoring and cyber security.
Procurement discipline appears to matter more than novelty. Many suppliers tend to sell into budget-constrained institutions with long approval paths, so integration, evidence of learner benefit and privacy assurance may carry more weight than new feature sets. Scale-up scarcity points to a market where acquisition by broader education, workforce-learning or administrative-software groups remains plausible. Direct-to-learner channels may keep producing new entrants, but school and college suppliers are likely to face tighter security, safeguarding and interoperability demands before they can become default systems.

Key facts
About 8% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (34 of 390 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
7% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (29 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
ICO guidance puts edtech products that process children’s personal information within Children’s code scope where children are likely users or the provider influences processing decisions.
Department for Education digital and technology standards require schools and colleges to work towards core standards by 2030, including broadband, wireless networks, governance, filtering and monitoring, and cyber security.
The UK attracts 41% of all European investment in educational technology.
Almost a quarter of Europe’s education technology companies are based in the UK.

How UK edtech companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Revenue usually comes from subscription licences for learning platforms, assessment software, classroom tools and learner-support services, with professional services layered around implementation, training and content migration. Pricing tends to follow seats, learners, modules, campuses or institution-wide access, sometimes with usage-based assessment or content fees. Engagements are often annual because education budgets and academic calendars make mid-year switching awkward; multi-year renewals appear where the tool becomes part of teaching, assessment or admin workflows. Services-led firms may charge setup fees and day rates, while direct-to-learner products more often use monthly subscriptions or course fees.
Who they sell to
Most selling is to institutions rather than individual teachers, although classroom champions can shape evaluation. In schools and colleges, headteachers, finance directors, trust operations teams, IT managers, safeguarding leads and curriculum heads tend to share approval. In universities, learning-technology, library, registry, procurement and faculty teams often sit around the same decision. Employer-learning products usually face HR, learning-and-development, compliance and finance buyers. Contract values range from low-cost departmental pilots to campus-wide or trust-wide agreements, with sales cycles often running from a term-length trial into the next budget cycle. Routes to market include direct sales, public frameworks, reseller channels and formal tendering.
What they buy
Most edtech firms tend to spend on the plumbing needed to make education buyers trust and adopt a product: cloud hosting, identity management, learner-record integrations, data warehousing, backup, security monitoring and accessibility testing. Commercial teams buy CRM, marketing automation, tender tracking, proposal support, customer success tooling and subscription billing; product teams buy analytics, observability, user research and test environments. Services budgets often go to education-sector legal advice, UK GDPR work, safeguarding reviews, curriculum or assessment specialists, implementation contractors and support recruitment. Firms selling into employers may also buy channel partnerships and sales enablement aimed at HR and learning buyers.
Why and how to sell to them
Edtech suppliers tend to revisit vendor stacks when a pilot turns into a wider roll-out, a new sales or customer-success leader arrives, a funding round requires cleaner reporting, or a school-security review exposes gaps. Other triggers include hiring implementation staff, moving from direct-to-learner sales into institutional sales, preparing for tender work, or responding to UK GDPR, safeguarding and cyber-security questions. Outreach works better when it maps to adoption and renewal risk: shorter onboarding, clearer evidence packs for buyers, fewer integration failures, cleaner support workflows or audit trails for children’s information. Generic productivity claims usually land less well than procurement-specific proof.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
