Education Companies in the UK: 63,716 Active Firms (2026)
Education and training organisations in the UK teach learners, deliver vocational skills, and provide support services across public and private markets.
Demand tends to split between employer-funded training, parent- or learner-paid tutoring, publicly commissioned skills provision, and services sold into schools and colleges. Buying centres are correspondingly varied: HR and apprenticeship teams, school senior leaders, local public bodies, examinations and quality teams, and central operations in site-based providers. Engagements range from short courses and assessment contracts to longer delivery relationships, with safeguarding, attendance, outcomes reporting and learner support usually built into operations. Sizeable providers tend to carry a mixed workforce of teaching staff, enrolment teams, compliance specialists and administrators, while smaller operators often narrow around one subject, qualification pathway or local catchment.
The UK cohort contains 63,716 active education and training companies, making it a broad market rather than a narrow institutional list. Reported headcount totals 10,793 staff, concentrated among organisations that disclose employee numbers rather than across every tutor, academy vehicle or training company in the market. The shape is therefore mixed: many operators are likely small teaching, support or assessment businesses, while the revenue-generating end is made up of regional and national providers selling to employers, schools, public bodies and individual learners. For researchers, the main caution is segmentation; an apprenticeship provider, exam-services firm and private tutoring business can all sit within the same headline category.
Operating risk sits less in a single licence gate than in a stack of obligations around safeguarding, public funding, learner outcomes, assessment quality, equality duties, and the handling of personal information. Providers selling to employers usually need evidence of completion, attendance and progression, while those serving children or vulnerable learners carry more formal governance and safer-recruitment expectations. Publicly funded delivery also tends to bind providers into audit trails, eligibility checks and performance monitoring. That mix favours organisations that can document teaching quality and learner support, not just fill classrooms or win short-course demand.
Expansion appears likely to remain uneven. Employer-funded skills and blended adult learning tend to offer clearer commercial routes than provision tied to public budgets, where procurement cycles and quality assurance can slow expansion. Smaller providers may keep specialising by subject, learner group or local labour-market need, while larger operators are better placed to absorb compliance, sales and learner-support costs. Consolidation has been a recurring pattern in fragmented training markets, but education buying is relationship-led and reputational; acquisition alone rarely substitutes for credible outcomes, safeguarding culture and delivery capacity.

Key facts
About 1% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (462 of 63,716 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
28% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (18,437 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Education and training providers sell into schools and colleges, employers buying workforce training, and households paying for supplementary learning.
The sector spans classroom teaching, vocational skills provision, tutoring, assessment, and education support services.
Procurement differs between public education buyers, employer-funded training budgets, and direct-to-household learning models.
Regulated teaching and commercial training sit under the same broad industry label, so segmentation matters for research and sales screening.

How UK Education companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Education providers usually earn through a mix of per-learner fees, cohort-based contracts, assessment charges, licence income and funded delivery claims. A tutoring operator may be paid by parents per session, while an employer-facing training provider may price by apprentice, delegate or qualification pathway. School-facing services often sit between software, curriculum content and professional services, with annual licences, implementation fees and support charges. Delivery economics depend on utilisation: tutor hours, classroom or site occupancy, learner retention, assessment throughput and the administrative cost of evidencing progress. The commercial product is rarely just teaching; it is packaged learning, learner support, reporting and compliance wrapped around a subject or outcome.
Who they sell to
Buyer profiles vary more than in many B2B markets. Employer-funded providers typically sell to HR directors, learning and development teams, apprenticeship leads, operations heads and finance teams, with procurement becoming more formal as contract value rises. School and college suppliers usually reach senior leaders, curriculum heads, trust-level operations teams and procurement staff, often around academic-year planning cycles. Parent- or learner-paid models lean on direct response, referrals and self-serve enrolment. Publicly commissioned work tends to move through tenders, frameworks and evidence-heavy renewal processes. Typical sales cycles range from short enrolment decisions to multi-month procurement, especially where safeguarding, outcomes or public funding are part of the decision.
What they buy
Most education firms tend to spend on systems that reduce manual administration around learners, staff and evidence. Common categories include learner management, student records, CRM, enrolment workflow, attendance tracking, assessment tools, reporting dashboards, billing, payment processing and document management. Providers with digital or blended delivery also buy cloud hosting, content production, video delivery, accessibility support, cyber security and analytics. Larger operators need HR, payroll, scheduling, workforce management and safer-recruitment processes for teaching and support staff. Sales and marketing budgets usually sit around lead generation, admissions, employer account management and reputation. Legal, accounting, insurance and audit support matter where contracts involve public funding, children, regulated qualifications or multi-site delivery.
Why and how to sell to them
Education buyers tend to evaluate suppliers when growth exposes operational strain: more learners, more tutors, new delivery sites, blended provision, a larger employer contract or a public funding award. Common pain points are enrolment leakage, poor attendance visibility, slow evidence collection, tutor utilisation, reporting burden, safeguarding workflow and cash flow between delivery and payment. Leadership changes, recruitment bursts, new qualification routes and audit preparation can all signal commercial intent. Outbound works better when it links to a measurable operating issue rather than generic improvement language. Useful angles include fewer manual checks per learner, clearer progress evidence, faster employer reporting, lower no-show rates and less administrative load on teaching staff.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
