Extractives Companies in the UK: 1,500+ Active Firms (2026)
Extractives companies in the UK mine, quarry and support oil, gas and mineral production under planning, licensing and environmental permits.
Buying decisions tend to sit with operations directors, estates and land teams, procurement, environmental managers and finance teams rather than a single digital buyer. Demand is mainly business-to-business, with customer size running from SME subcontractors to industrial groups with multi-site operations, plus public-sector bodies commissioning remediation or infrastructure work. Engagements are usually tied to named sites or assets, from site-level contracts to multi-site frameworks, so purchasing leans towards plant, drilling, surveying, haulage, permitting and safety services rather than transactional spend. The behavioural marker is operational accountability: buyers need suppliers that can work around access rights, consent conditions, restoration duties and site interruption risk.
The UK cohort contains 1,566 actively trading companies, spanning aggregates, crushed rock, sand and gravel, hydrocarbon-related support, mining services and subsidence remediation. The employment footprint is 2,556 reported employees, giving the sector a more industrial profile than its company count alone suggests. Much of the addressable market sits in operating sites, planning-led developments and service work around regulated extraction rather than in office-based advisory businesses.
Permissioning is fragmented by activity and location. Mineral operators generally need landowner agreement, planning permission from the relevant mineral planning authority and permits from the applicable environmental regulator, with the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency all appearing in the regime. Marine extraction adds marine licensing, while coal exploration, extraction and access through coal seams sit with the Mining Remediation Authority. Active mines and quarries also carry site safety duties overseen by the Health and Safety Executive in Great Britain and HSENI in Northern Ireland.
Future activity appears tied to permitted reserves, infrastructure demand and the cost of compliance rather than to a classic start-up adoption curve. Smaller operators tend to remain site-bound, with growth limited by planning horizons, restoration obligations and access to capital equipment. The scarcer scaled businesses are likely to absorb specialist services where it helps secure plant capacity, environmental compliance or local land access. Policy pressure around legacy mines, water, dust, biodiversity and worker safety should keep the sector relatively procedural, even where end-market demand improves.

Key facts
About 8% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (140 of 1,566 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.
12% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (190 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.
Extractive-industry GVA was £28 billion in 2024, down from £32 billion in 2023, with oil and gas production and associated support services accounting for over 95% of sector GVA.
Non-energy minerals remain material for construction supply chains: 185.9 million tonnes were extracted from the UK landmass for sale in 2022, including 126.4 million tonnes of crushed rock and 40.3 million tonnes of sand and gravel.
Mineral extraction generally requires landowner agreement, planning permission from the relevant mineral planning authority and any required regulatory permits.
Permits may involve the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency or the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, while marine extraction may require marine licences from the relevant marine regulator.
Active mining and quarrying operations are regulated for health and safety by the Health and Safety Executive in Great Britain and HSENI in Northern Ireland.

How UK extractives companies work and how to sell to them
What they do
Extractives businesses usually earn through physical output, site services or specialist support, not through repeatable software-style subscriptions. Quarry and mineral operators sell by volume, grade and delivery distance, often with haulage, screening, crushing or washing bundled into the commercial terms. Mining services, drilling, subsidence and remediation firms tend to price as project work, day-rate crews, plant hire, framework call-offs or outcome-linked packages where risk can be bounded. Hydrocarbon-adjacent support follows asset and campaign cycles, with mobilisation costs, standby capacity and safety obligations shaping margin. Revenue is therefore lumpy and site-specific; a buyer may care less about unit price than certainty of supply, access permissions, environmental conditions and avoidance of downtime.
Who they sell to
Most firms sell to construction-material buyers, civil engineering contractors, infrastructure delivery teams, utilities, industrial estates, landowners and public bodies with contaminated land, subsidence or restoration needs. The economic buyer is often a commercial director, operations director, project director or procurement lead, while environmental, planning, health and safety, finance and site managers can all veto a supplier. Sales routes tend to mix direct relationships, approved supplier lists, tender portals, framework agreements and local broker networks. Urgent maintenance or short-haul aggregate supply can move quickly, but new extraction, remediation or multi-site service contracts usually involve site visits, insurance checks, method statements and procurement scrutiny before award.
What they buy
Most extractives firms tend to spend on operational capacity before back-office tools: mobile plant, drilling equipment, fleet, tyres, fuel, spares, maintenance labour, weighbridges, sampling, surveying and haulage. Around that core sits a recurring need for environmental monitoring, water management, dust and noise control, geotechnical advice, legal support, planning consultancy, insurance, recruitment and health and safety training. Larger operators are more likely to buy maintenance management, asset tracking, fleet telematics, field-service scheduling, document control, procurement, finance, payroll and workforce systems. Suppliers that understand site access, shift patterns, offline working and evidence trails for inspections will usually sound more credible than generic office-software sellers.
Why and how to sell to them
Buying intent often appears when a site wins or varies permission, replaces plant, takes on a new framework, absorbs another operation, faces an inspection, or has a downtime, safety, water, dust or neighbour-complaint problem. Margin is exposed to fuel, haulage, repair delays, consent conditions and local access constraints, so pitches should be anchored in avoided stoppages, faster evidence gathering, lower rework and clearer accountability rather than abstract efficiency. Outbound works better when it references the operational event: a quarry extension, remediation programme, marine licence, seasonal production peak or new compliance owner. Procurement still matters, but site managers and environmental leads often shape the shortlist before a formal tender appears.
How this list is built
Data sources
This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.
Classification
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.
Freshness
The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.
