Mining Companies in Manchester: 40 Active Firms (2026)

Mining companies in Manchester extract, quarry and process minerals, aggregates and related materials across the city-region.

Buying centres tend to sit in procurement and operations teams rather than digital or finance functions. Construction contractors, infrastructure clients and industrial materials buyers are usually purchasing defined outputs: aggregate supply, mineral processing capacity, haulage-linked services or support around extraction sites. Engagements look more like local supply contracts, framework call-offs and site-specific operating work than software-style subscriptions. The commercially relevant firms are therefore those with demonstrable permissions, equipment, land access and production workflows, including environmental monitoring, safety controls and restoration planning. Manchester’s market also catches adjacent service providers that understand quarry and extractive operations, even where their role is processing, logistics or specialist support rather than direct extraction.

Manchester has 40 actively trading mining and extractives companies in the current cohort. Reported headcount totals 146 people, so the employment footprint is visible but spread across relatively small operating teams. Commercial scale is concentrated: 3 companies report turnover above £5M, while 7 were incorporated since 2022. That mix gives the city-region a small base of established extractive and processing firms, with newer entrants present but not dominating the profile. The buyer base is likely to remain construction, infrastructure and industrial materials customers rather than consumer-facing markets.

Extractive activity is shaped less by a single sector rulebook than by site-level permissioning. Land access, mineral planning consent and environmental permits usually sit ahead of production, with restoration obligations following through the life of a quarry or extraction site. GOV.UK also treats legacy mines, subsidence and mining information as part of the operating context, which matters in an urban region with historic industrial land. Depending on the activity, permits can involve the Environment Agency or devolved environmental regulators; coal-related permissions sit with the Mining Remediation Authority. Health and safety oversight in Great Britain sits with the Health and Safety Executive, making site management, blasting, haulage and contractor control core operating issues rather than back-office compliance.

Manchester’s extractive base appears likely to remain shaped by planning friction, land availability and construction demand rather than by a wave of new mine development. Operators that already hold permissions and local supply relationships tend to have an advantage, while younger firms may need to attach themselves to processing, materials handling or specialist services before taking on asset-heavy extraction work. Consolidation pressure may come from customers wanting reliable supply and from compliance costs that are hard to absorb at micro-business scale. At the same time, restoration duties and environmental scrutiny should keep expansion cautious, particularly where sites sit close to housing, transport corridors or legacy industrial land.

Key facts

About 7% of the trading cohort reports turnover above £5M (3 of 40 firms) — the rest sits below that revenue band.

17% of the cohort was incorporated since 2022 (7 firms), so a sizeable share is in its first few filing cycles.

Mineral operators generally need landowner agreement, planning permission from the relevant mineral planning authority and any required regulatory permits before extraction starts.

Permitting can involve the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency or the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, depending on activity and location.

Active mining and quarrying operations are regulated for health and safety by the Health and Safety Executive in Great Britain and HSENI in Northern Ireland.

UK extractive-industry GVA was £28 billion in 2024, down from £32 billion in 2023, with oil and gas production and associated support services accounting for over 95% of sector GVA.

How Manchester mining companies work and how to sell to them

What they do

Mining, quarrying and extractive support firms earn revenue from material supply, processing, haulage-linked services and site work tied to particular permissions or assets. Pricing is usually anchored to tonnes, loads, plant time, mobilisation charges or agreed schedules of rates, with repeat customers negotiating supply terms rather than buying a subscription. Some firms sit closer to industrial services, earning fees for crushing, screening, handling, testing or restoration work around operational sites. Margins tend to depend on utilisation, distance to customer sites, fuel and labour costs, and the ability to keep permissions, equipment and safety processes aligned with customer demand.

Who they sell to

Buyers are typically construction contractors, civil engineering firms, infrastructure clients, housebuilders, industrial materials users and public-sector procurement teams working through frameworks or project tenders. The day-to-day sponsor is often a procurement manager, contracts manager, commercial lead, site manager or operations director, with health, safety and environmental staff influencing supplier approval. Repeat material supply can be relationship-led and relatively local; larger infrastructure or public works are more likely to involve pre-qualification, documentation, insurance checks and formal tendering. Most sales cycles therefore follow project calendars, framework renewals or site mobilisation windows rather than quarterly software buying rhythms.

What they buy

Most Manchester mining and quarrying firms tend to spend on plant maintenance, mobile equipment, haulage, fuel management, site safety, insurance, environmental monitoring, planning advice, legal services, accountancy and workforce cover. Software purchases are usually practical rather than experimental: production tracking, weighbridge systems, asset management, fleet scheduling, health and safety records, document control, finance tools and basic CRM for recurring industrial customers. Specialist services can also fit where they reduce operating friction, such as permit support, noise and dust monitoring, geotechnical advice, recruitment for site roles, training, tender writing or marketing aimed at construction and infrastructure buyers.

Why and how to sell to them

Mining buyers tend to evaluate vendors when a site permission changes, a framework is renewed, a customer contract is won, equipment downtime starts constraining output, or environmental and safety paperwork becomes harder to manage. Outbound angles work better when they attach to operational risk rather than abstract efficiency: fewer stoppages, cleaner audit trails, better contractor control, easier evidence for the Environment Agency or the Health and Safety Executive, and more predictable supply to construction clients. Smaller operators may be owner-managed and cautious on spend, so credible references by site type, clear implementation effort and pricing tied to usage or project value usually matter.

How this list is built

Methodology

Data sources

This list is built from UK Companies House filings, XBRL accounts data, and semantic analysis of each company's public website. Revenue and headcount figures come from the most recent filed accounts; where the company has not filed, values are estimated using a model trained on filed history and peer benchmarks and are labelled as estimates.

Classification

Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, Firmbase classifies each company semantically: the company's website is crawled, an AI model reads what the company actually sells, and the company is placed into the relevant industry and subsectors. SIC codes are used as one signal but not the only one. This means a company that registered under a generic SIC code but pivoted into (for example) fintech is correctly identified as fintech, not as its original SIC category.

Freshness

The underlying company data is refreshed from Companies House continuously; filings appear in the list within days of submission. The curated list ordering is regenerated when the underlying data moves meaningfully (company count changes by more than 5%, a new company enters the top-ranked segment, or the filed-revenue numbers for the top firms change). You can see the last-updated timestamp near the top of the page.

Frequently asked questions

How many mining companies are there in the Manchester?
Around 39 actively-trading mining companies are registered in the Manchester. Of those, 3 report turnover above £5M in their most recent filed accounts.
What counts as a mining company in this list?
A company is included when its public website and filed activity descriptions indicate it sells mining products or services as its primary business — not just because of the SIC code it picked at incorporation. Each company is tagged via semantic analysis of its website content; SIC codes are used as supporting signal, not the sole gate.
Which are the largest mining companies in the Manchester?
The list is ordered by reported UK turnover from each firm's most recent Companies House XBRL filing, so the largest mining companies in the Manchester appear at the top of the table. About 3 of the 39 actively-trading firms report turnover above £5M in their most recent accounts; subsidiaries that file consolidated worldwide accounts are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific.
What do mining companies in the Manchester actually do?
How does Manchester mining compare internationally?
Cross-border comparisons of mining populations are tricky because every country defines the sector slightly differently and reports financials on different cadences. We focus this list on firms that file UK statutory accounts so the figures are comparable; international peer breakdowns aren't bundled here.
How is this list built and how fresh is the data?
The list is rebuilt from Companies House dump data, XBRL filings, and a website analysis pass over each company's public site. Companies with consolidated group accounts (worldwide rather than UK-only revenue) are excluded so the figures stay UK-specific. The page's last-updated date is shown at the top.
How big are the typical mining companies in the Manchester?
Company sizes in this list vary widely. The median actively-trading mining firm employs around 1 people, and median UK turnover across the list is roughly £29k in the most recent filed accounts.
Are these mostly new or established mining companies?
7 of the 39 actively-trading mining companies in this list were incorporated since 2022; the remainder were incorporated before then, so the Manchester list mixes recent entrants with longer-established firms.
What SIC codes does this use?
Rather than relying solely on SIC codes, we build a semantic understanding of what each company actually does by scraping its website and analysing it with AI. This means a company is included based on what it sells, not what SIC code it picked at incorporation. SIC codes are used as a signal but not the primary classification.
What buying signals should I look for?
The strongest signals for B2B outbound are recent leadership changes (new CFO/CRO), rapid headcount growth, revenue-band changes, and web-stack changes. Firmbase tracks all of these automatically.
